I was looking for an HDMI cable for a small DVD player in my kitchen were space is very tight: it needs to be 90° upward (most cables go the other way) and allow the player to press against the counter backsplash. This design protects against cable damage in this situation, but sticks out a good 3/4" so my player doesn't sit square and requires I pull the TV out more than I'd like (you'd have to see it, but as I said, it's in a really tight spot). It's not the manufacturer's "fault" but it seems to me that part of the point of a 90° plug is minimal clearance; I've seen others that offer shorter clearance, but they've all been 90° "down" so far, which also won't work.
