I am about to travel around the world and want an alternative to my Pentax K10D, particularly when wishing to be unobtrusive in third-world countries. First, I spent some time with the Panasonic LX2 -same camera as the Leica at less than half the price -which has some unique features and seems to be a terrific camera. BUT it won't go into a shirt pocket because the marvelous Leica lens protrudes. At a hefty (!) 7.8 oz, it weighs 56% more than the Optio Z10's 5 oz. The Optio is so small that there is nothing to hold onto. The Panasonic is better in that respect, but significantly bulkier.

I had just about decided to send both cameras back when I realized that I hadn't even looked at the few pix I had taken with the Optio. So I duly transferred them to my Mac and was absolutely astonished by the results. For reasons I don't understand, the Optio seems to handle subtle shades in the sky and clouds better than the K10.

The bottom line: The Optio produces razor-sharp pictures, even when using the 7x zoom hand-held at a slow shutter speed. Given some of the negative comments in these pages, I really didn't expect that. The design of the camera is superb. I only wish there were some semblance of a grip to hold onto.

This is a great camera. You can use the Auto but I prefer to use the Green mode where you can set the settings as in my SRT 101 35MM camera. I took a outdoor shot of a veined flower, about 8 inches away. It came out extremely detailed, and trust me I'm pickey. I then used the stitch mode where you can create a 'Digital wide angle' it also worked great. The feature of the lens that uses a refraction mirror to go from wide angle to close is great as you never get the lens protruding from the camera. The features in this camera are plentiful and you can use them to get really fantastic pictures. Read up on this camera and compare for yourself, you'll love it.

I bought this camera because of its huge optical zoom, 8 MP, new mirror optics and because it is Pentax. And this camera is absolutely great! The pictures are very juicy in color and clear! Nothing moves when you zoom only mirrors inside the camera! It's true that the camera marks easily, but it can be easily cleaned! The Menu is very easy to read, with helping tips about each mode of shooting a great plus for me since I don't like to read the manual. However there was one thing that frightened me and I did read the manual if you press several times Ok-button histogram will appear and if you want to shoot something that has spots which are very dark and very light they will appear as yellow and red spots on the LCD display! In the beginning that made me think the LCD or camera itself is damaged. But it's actually the way it's supposed to work!!! And now I think this is very useful tool! O! btw, to turn the camera on you should move the plastic piece that covers lenses on front tricky to understand but easy to do!

So I'm completely satisfied with this purchase. That's why I give this camera 5 stars. A great camera in style!!!

This camera has speed settings from ISO 64 to 3200. Of these, only 64 and 100 are acceptable. In bright scenes you will get a picture with good detail and color and a small amount of noise. Even at these low settings, a slightly magnified image will show noise as a speckling in the image. I made a mistake buying this camera somehow misunderstanding its characteristics before I bought it. If you do not believe me, then read the professional reviews, such as at

The good It's compact, has a 7x optical zoom, has a nice screen, easy to use controls, and takes adequate movies.

The bad It takes low quality noisy pictures, it has no image stabilization. Pentax claims it has image stabilization, but what they really do is increase the ISO level, reduce the exposure time, and greatly increase the noise level. You will get this effect whenever you take zoom pictures, except in the brightest of sunlight.

My recommendation: Do not buy this camera! If you want a small high zoom camera that takes good movies, but has better noise characteristics, look at the very similar looking Casio with real image stabilization. Pentax certainly could do better.

I have several Pentax cameras (digital and 35mm) and I find that they are truly built to last and are as user friendly as they possibly can be. This camera is my quickie pocket camera and has proven itself worthy of the Pentax name. The buttons are simple, intuitive and easy to read for any digital camera this size. The zoom is awesome, but I usually don't go past the 7x optical because the digital zoom is like most digital zooms, grainy. It isn't the fastest between shots, but it's usually fast enough even for sports, kids and pet action. It shoots nice little videos with decent sounds quality too. I have dropped this camera several times on hard surfaces, used it in rain and snow, and even dropped it in some water once and it still works great. The LCD viewer is like all LCDs in the sun, a little hard to see, but I find that the photos always turn out better back home than they looked on the LCD. Bottom line, for $200, this is a great, great camera. I wouldn't have been upset paying $300 for it.

I have been using my D-5000 for nearly 3 months, and don't have anything bad to say about it. The 18-55mm lens is kind of limiting and will eventually upgrade to a better lens for more detailed shots. Definitely a great buy and I would recommand it for first time D-SLR buyers like myself!

HP Photosmart M22 4MP Digital Camera

I use it for backpacking and camping trips in the Pacific Northwest. I'm not a photo nut, just in it for the memories. I needed something light for backpacking and cheap incase the thing gets destroyed along the way. It has all the features I need and then some. It's light, compact and the weather resistance is a great plus. I took it out to Glacier National Park with a 256MB and it worked out great. Worked well in most lighting conditions. Got some great sunset shots. All in all, very happy with it for the $149 I paid.

i purchased this camera for myself, as i love digital photography. photoshop can do wonders. anyway, i take this camera everywhere i go and take pictures of random things, and play around with them on photoshop. this camera produces pictures at the perfect size i need. the LCD screen is just the right size and the buttons are not too small. the memory on it is horrible. it hardly holds any pictures. i recommend a memory card with about 52mb for a reasonable price. this camera is a great buy for not a lot of money.

I got this camera as an early birthday present. Less than one week later I had to return it. First the camera turns on by sliding a door that covers the lens over. This mechanism works only when it wants to. Half the time you can't even get the camera to turn on.

When it's on it immediately drains the batteries. I changed the batteries twice in three days.

Somewhere around the 6 day mark the camera just stopped working completely.

In addition the software takes forever to download and ended up corrupting many of my files during the installation process. The pics are ok at best. They are pretty sharp if you're just going to email pics but if you're going to actually be printing them out, the quality is subpar.

Overall a horribly disappointing experience and a waste of money. I have since exchanged the camera for another brand altogether and I am much happier.

I've always envied the others around me with digital cameras, but I finally recieved one for Christmas 2005, and it happened to be this one. It has a lot of different features, all of which impress me.

I've also read from other customers that the battery life is horrible, while not horrible, it has poor battery life.

But I've devised a plan to just keep the camera off when I'm not taking pictures. It only takes a few seconds for the camera to power up, so unless you want to take a picture of something that will be gone in 2 seconds, keep it on. But if you're just walking around and see something interesting, turn it on.

Just keep it off when you aren't taking pictures.

I also advise you buy rechargable batteries

I bought the Canon G10... a great p&s digital camera, but quickly realized that I really wanted a DSLR.

I used and loved the Olympus OM-2S film SLR for many years, so I decided to sell my G10, throw in some extra money, and get a digital SLR that would make me feel like I used to feel while shooting my OM...

The E30 is THAT camera. I haven't regretted my decision at all. The E30 takes great shots.. and the kit lens is pretty nice too... better than some Canikon piece of junk.

Rebel-what? D90-who?

Olympus might be the underdog, but who do you like to root for in the movies? That's right... the underdog. And sometimes the underdog just doesn't get the respect he deserves.

If you have some old Olympus OM glass already, you can't go wrong... throw the adapter on there and shoot those old manual lenses. What a treat. There's a 2X crop factor (a 50mm lens becomes a 100mm) but it's still GREAT glass, and the pictures look amazing.

There are rumors that the Olympus E-5 (pro model replacing the E-3) might be out soon... so if you are hardcore, or want to spend a lot of cash, you might want to wait. But for the average almost-pro shooter, I think the E30 is a damn fine camera.

And don't listen to the 4/3 sensor haters out there. I love the 4/3 sensor. I want to marry the 4/3 sensor. I love the way "4/3 sensor" sounds as it rolls off my tongue. All of this full-frame sensor stuff is nonsense. How many HUGE 21 megapixel files do you need on your hard-drive?

I challenge anyone to look at a well-made shot from the E30 and honestly say that it doesn't look fine.

NIKON: played out.

CANON: boring.

OLYMPUS: hot.

I own the Olympus E-510 and previously purchased the E-3. I sold the E-3 because I found it too heavy to carry all day in the wetlands photographing birds. The E-30 has excellent image quality, auto focusing, ease of use and is just the right weight and ergonomic fit for me. I find the E-30 extremely intuitive to use. I would have liked the body to be weather sealed like the E-3 but that would have made it too heavy. All in all, the camera is a joy to use and I would recommend it (and have) to anyone wanting a quality product at a fair price from Amazon.

Upgraded from an e620. Wanted the larger body to balance with my larger lenses (12-60, 70-300). The autofocus speed is better, overall operation faster. Viewfinder is much better than e620. Really enjoy looking through VF now, the high eye point is really great too. Lot's of people say that image quality is slightly better than e620 which shares same sensor/pipeline. I agree. It is slight, but noticeable.

Amazon's shipping was fast, no problems there. Price is right. Got mine for $899 with lens. Price fluctuates, so check before you buy.

The E-30 does what it is made to do exceptionally well, take great pictures. For a semi-pro or enthusiast photographer, the E-30 is great. Combined with the Zuiko 12-60mm is a powerful combination capable of capturing phenomenal, professional looking photos in almost any situation.

The camera has many options, this also adds to the complexity. Once you find you preferred setting you could shoot for hours and achieve your goal of consistently taking great pictures.

This camera is not the biggest, but it is not a compact camera. If you use the auxiliary batter pack its quite large and will not fit into most camera bags.

Many online critics rate the Canon and Nikon over the Olympus brand, but the Zuiko lenses make up for a great deal of what the image sensor may lack. I believe the E-30 Olympus and higher end Zuiko lenses surpass the Nikons and come close to the comparable Canons. If you can get an E-30 from someone looking to upgrade to a new E-5 you can catch a great deal and have a great value.

I have owned my Olympus E-30 for over a year now and have taken thousands of photos many of which you can see at . I debated for quite a while between this and the Nikon D90. At the time the Olympus E-30 was just a little more money in the kit that I got, but since I didn't have any old Nikon lenses or anything I had to worry about working with it, and since I knew of the quality of the Zuiko lenses and after comparing images taken under lab conditions on I opted to go with the Olympus. I have really been completely happy with this awesome camera. If I could change one thing, based on what I know now I would have bought the body only and then bought the Zuiko 12-60mm f2.8 lens. I bought the kit with the 14-42mm zoom and have since bought the 12-60mm. What a GREAT combination the E-30 and the 12-60mm lens make. If you are thinking about a quality DSLR camera and don't care about the fact that it doesn't do video, like I didn't, and don't have lenses from Canon or Nikon that you are trying to use with your new DSLR then I would highly recommend the Olympus E-30.

Adapter worked fine for me for almost 6 month. I used it rarely, though had no issues with it. Till it just fell apart on one of the sides: I've attached an image to customer images section.

4/12/2013 update

Contacted the support team: they have sent me a replacement. Works perfect. Switching from 3 to 4 stars as device itself worked without issues and when it got physically broken, supplier resolved the problem in timely and quality manner. Might get it to 5 starts after couple month if there would be no issues with the replaced adapter.

After two week's use for about 2 hours every day, it seems that BlueRigger has made a good quality adapter.

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro. I use the adapter to connect the computer to my AV receiver and thusly to my TV. I can't see any picture or audio quality loss as compared to the computer's own output. The connectors are firm, too, as to not fall out or disconnect due to the weight of itself and/or the HDMI cable.

Upon first use, the buyer will have to change the output setting in System Preferences' "Sound" pane to match the connected device. In my case, it's identified as "Sony AVAMP" but results will vary. The point is that it will be easy to identify, and this necessary step is not unreasonable.

After adjusting the setting, subsequent disconnects and reconnects will not require you to change the Sound output setting.

This was a great purchase, I'm completely satisfied, and I'm glad I didn't buy the $40 Apple brand adapter.

My only wish is that BlueRigger would make a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter for my iOS devices, too. But that will not affect my rating of this product.

I used this to connect a three year old Macbook Pro to an HDMI TV so that I could view my computer's display on a larger monitor. The Mac has a DisplayPort Video Out connection on the left side which the BlueRigger fits into. I connected the other end to an HDMI cable running to the HDMI input on my TV. Once setup, the display looks great and there does not appear to be any deterioration in quality or resolution, even at 1080p. The DsiplayPort connection and the female HDMI connection on the BlueRigger form a secure fit with the HDMI cable and it's not likely to come loose. The cable looks nice and appears to be high quality with a thick casing.

If after connecting the cable you see a Galaxy background, blue/black screen, or other anomaly on your external monitor, try going into DISPLAYS and then ARRANGEMENT and checking the box that says to mirror the display. You will only need to do that once. After it is setup, it should instantly mirror the display on the external source with about 4 seconds of plugging in the BlueRigger.

Who should buy the K2000? Anyone also considering entry level Nikon or Canon DSLRs. This is fully competitive, but offers in body image stabilization that works with any lens (old and new). Nice feature set at a great value.

The auto focus of this camera is improved, focusing more precisely in low light than previous Pentax models, and also works with the new SDM lenses. Auto white balance is also improved. It does much better under tungsten light than some previous Pentax cameras.

The shake reduction is highly effective, as much so as most in lens systems. About 3 f-stops for me. This is a handy feature because it works with ALL lenses. You don't have to keep buying the same feature for $100 to $500 every time you buy a lens for which you want stabilization. Not to mention, when a new body comes out you get an improved stabilizer. With an in lens system, you have to replace your lenses to get improved stabilizers.

Even though this is a no frills system, it is very capable for those advanced amateurs or pro's looking for a compact body to use with the Pentax Limited prime lenses (compact lenses offering outstanding image quality). The big two haven't invested many resources in prime lenses suitable for APS-C sensors (by far the best selling dSLRs), Pentax has bucked the industry trend with their superb DA Limited series lenses.

Image quality is outstanding. I used it at a studio shoot recently, and had no issue. My only complaints were the lack of user selectable focus points (besides all or center only) and lack of orientation sensor. For the most part these were easy to work around. The picture results were stunning, even up to ISO 800. By 1600 there starts to be a fair amount of noise, but there is no pattern to it (my K20d has awful horizontal pattern noise). These photos are highly suitable for B&W conversion, and they resemble high speed film better than many digital cameras.

In conclusion, you get a lot of bang for you buck with this camera. The bundled AF200FG flash is very good compared to any built in flash offering much better range, better fill, and being off camera helps reduce red eye and shadowing from lenses. The kit lens is excellent at apertures 5.6 and up at any focal length (it is a tad soft at the corners at wide angles at apertures larger (smaller number) than f/5.6. I mounted it to the K20d and it had no problems resolving for the higher resolution sensor. I recommend this without many reservations (see my cons), and for a starter or enthusiast it is a great little camera. With my review title, it is the first time I can feel comfortable to recommend a Pentax to a non-DSLR user (previously they have been better enthusiast, non-beginner models).

Update One: First set of batteries that came with the camera have more than 1000 shots on them, many of these with the flash. This has truly amazing battery life, especially considering how much the back LCD is illuminated (no top information display). This would last many users a year!

The only other little things I have noticed is there is no slot for a cable remote and the back LCD can be bright. This camera wouldn't be the best for star trails for example, but this will only impact a small percentage of users.

I still love it!

This is a great camera. Its pictures are stunning. The camera is well built and it feels solid in your hand. The kit lens is excellent and it uses all of my old 35mm Pentax lenses with the camera's stabilization feature.

The camera is very intuitive to use; I was able to use it right out of the box and have then progressed to use more and more powerful features by reading the manual. The features are all well thought out; this camera clearly implements many lessons learned from previous DSLR's because so many things are done so well. It is simply very well engineered.

I have had a series of point and shoot digital cameras over the last several years including a Fuji, a Sony and a couple of Canons. Before that I used a 35mm Pentax SLR and am therefore familiar with SLR operation. I also have a number of good lenses from the film SLR.

Part of my enthusiasm is this is my first DSLR and it offers so much more than the point-and-shoots and my old 35mm SLR. For example, I have been using its RAW feature and can save photos in both a Pentax and a standard Adobe RAW format, the latter I was able to use with Photoshop Elements 6 and have found all kinds of useful adjustments that were never available to me before.

I also like the fact that this camera uses regular AA batteries available anywhere.

The AF200 flash works well in my group photo shots and is a great value bundled with the camera. It has a nice diffuser cover for the flash to support wide angle shots. On the negative side, the AF200 is not extremely powerful-I was used to a more powerful one with my old 35mm's external flash and the AF200 can not be swiveled to bounce the flash off the ceiling--another feature I miss. However, it is much more powerful than the pop-up on the camera and it too uses AA's.

Another feature I like about this camera is its low light performance. The pictures I took at night making use of high ISO and image stabilization were simply amazing.

The camera does not have live display on the LCD on the back; you have to look through the viewfinder. Despite my recent experience with the point-and-shoots which all have live view, I have not missed that feature-looking through the viewfinder works well for me under all lighting conditions.

Overall, this has proven to be the perfect camera for me. I STRONGLY recommend it for folk coming from the point-and-shoot world and if you happen to have some old Pentax lenses (or buy some on e-bay) it makes an even more compelling purchase. Five stars!

Buy Pentax K2000 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DA L Lens and AF200FG Flash Now

I own a Pentax K100D which was my first DSLR. Enjoyed for 2 years shooting sports photos (runners) and landscapes. Main issues were somewhat slow focus and having to clean sensor (30 minutes and test photos) with almost every lens change.

The new 2008 cameras almost all have built in sensor cleaners which are worth their weight in gold. I wanted faster autofocus and the "cleaner" so I looked at many reviews for all entry or middle level SLR brands. It came down to the Canon XSI, Sony A300 and the Pentax K2000. The Pentax 200D and 20D used existing autofocus and reviews all said they were slow.

With built in image stabilization, the flash included, and the 5 point auto focus (faster than the 11 point K100D) I decided on the Pentax. The Canon and Sony have live view, but if you haven't used it for awhile you won't miss it. I had also invested in a couple of lenses (Pentax 18-250) and a lesser priced Quantaray 70-300 zoom for the K100D, so I didn't need to spend any additional dollars.

Waiting for the spring track season and the faster continuous shooting speed, but I'm happy with everything I've taken so far. Slightly smaller than the K100 body, but sturdy and controls well placed. Help button is new and works very well, especially for the new SLR user.

I'm used to AA's for power and always keep an extra set charged.

This is my first DSLR, upgrading from a 10x point and shoot, although I was a film SLR owner for several years. I looked at the following cameras closely before deciding on the Pentax K2000: Nikon D60, Canon Rebel SXi and the Olympus E-420. Although I'm sure that all of these cameras are good, I chose the Pentax for the following reasons:

size: it's smaller then all of them except the Olympus and I liked the feel of it compared to the Olympus. I wanted a camera that's good for travel.

lenses: although I'm starting fresh with no lenses, I liked the fact that you can use Pentax lenses even from the 1970s gives me more options to pick up some good lens deals. Also, I read that Pentax has good lenses for cheaper than the others. Along with this purchase, I got a pancake Pentax 40mm lens love it and when it's on the camera, it's really not much bigger than a point and shoot.

good for beginners: it's very easy to use and makes it easy for people who are new to DSLR to learn.

I also like that it uses AA batteries good for travelers.

I like that there's not a bright red light that beams out to help focus in low-light situations. Some cameras have that and it's very annoying when you're trying to discreetly take photos in a church or someplace.

There are some things that could be improved, like the 5-point focus system, but for the price, this is a good camera.

Overall, I just like the camera and I'm loving some of the photos I'm taking. I also like the support you can get online at the Pentax forums. I would definitely recommend the Pentax K2000.

My K100D still works great, but it's starting to feel a bit dated with its slower autofocus system and lack of SDM lens support. Since K2000s are getting so inexpensive, I decided to pick one up for a minor upgrade.

My initial impression was that the K2000 is heavy. It actually weighs slightly less than the K100D, but the smaller hand grip makes it feel heavier to me. The hand grip is less bulbous so it doesn't fill into my hand nearly as well, but I suppose that the hand grip was the only part that could be drastically reduced in size without making the camera feel unbalanced.

I also immediately noticed the missing LED screen at the top. Fortunately, all of the information is clearly and brightly displayed on the back LCD screen now. The new interface is actually very, very well designed. It's familiar enough that I could jump right in, and intuitive enough that I quickly figured out the new shortcuts and features. I'm finding the autofocus to be pretty quick and camera operation a bit quieter. Overall, I find the K2000 to be extremely usable.

The switch to the 10MP sensor finally gives me ISO 100 and smaller ISO increments for more control, but I'm also noticing much more noise than with the wonderful 6MP sensor in my K100D. With my K100D, I found ISO 800 to be very usable, but I'm afraid of pushing beyond ISO 400 with the K2000. I think this is something that I'll just have to get used to when I'm framing and exposing scenes.

The DA L kit lens seems to be about the same as my old DA 18-55mm, except for the plastic mount and sticker badge. You also don't get a lens hood. I haven't really tried the AF200FG flash because I have the AF360FGZ, but it seems appropriate for an entry level kit flash.

Pros (relative to the K100D):

+ Smaller and slightly lighter than the K100D.

+ 10MP sensor that gives more control over ISO.

+ Incredibly intuitive interface.

+ Sv (sensitivity) mode! I didn't have this before on the K100D.

+ Excellent mix of pro and non-pro features like the Help button, which can also be changed to be the RAW button.

+ Despite the cheaper construction, the kit lens still feels solid and comparable to my old 18-55mm that has a metal mount.

Cons (Relative to the K100D):

The 10MP sensor is noisier than what I'm used to. I've seen some amazing pictures taken with this sensor though so I'll have to learn the limits of this camera.

The ergonomics of the body aren't quite as good as the K100D. It's probably perfect for people with smaller hands though.

The DA L kit lens has a plastic mount, a sticker badge, and no lens hood.

UPDATE 7/28/09: I took my K2000 to San Diego Comic-Con and I must say that it performed admirably at ISO 800. I found that as long as I expose properly (preposterous!), the noise levels are totally acceptable. It's a bit more fussy than the K100D when underexposing at the same sensitivity, but I'm no longer afraid of using this sensor at ISO 800.

Barbie Digital Camera

I ordered this camera for my 6 year old's Santa gift. I did not want her using my expensive camera. It would not take any pictures unless in bright natural light. When I went to install it on my computer it had the wrong software. I downloaded the software to find out that this camera was defective. Etoys replaced it at no cost, but the next one still wouldn't work with my computer or my neighbor's computer (and he's a computer tech.)

This purchase was nothing but frustrating. Spend the extra $bucks and get a better camera. This one isn't worth $.

Probably not as hi tech as the newer digital cameras. This one does an okay job for the megapixels it has to work with. The problem is because it has only two buttons on top, you have to toggle through the button to get to delete photos, etc. IT's a little too complicated for my 5 year old (the age group who likes barbies). It's built well though and comes with the instructions and cables. SO, if you can explain how to use it to your child and they understand, it's a good product.

We bought this for my 10 year old daughter, since she showed an interest in taking pictures. We did a lot of research and after this camera went on sale for $25, we decided to give it a shot. Software was very easy for me to install, and downloading pics was a snap. No, the pictures aren't top quality, some come out blurry and dark, but it takes fairly good pictures outside (no flash). Once we set up our old computer for the kids, I'm sure she is going to love taking pictures and dowloading them herself. And if it is something she sticks with, there will definitely be an upgrade next Christmas (something w/ a flash and lcd screen). But after researching and looking around, this seems to be the best digital camera for kids for the price. Not to mention how cute it is for girls :)

I concur wholeheartedly with all the good reviews here--we've had this camcorder for many years now and have shot hundreds of hours of video with it. It's great! One possible design flaw is the rotating eyepiece or viewfinder. Over the years the ribbon cable inside it wore out and I had a dickens of a time finding another. There are parts lists several places but no diagram to determine the part number, even from RCA (Thomson)service centers. If your display has gone to black and white or otherwise fritzed out, try moving the eyepiece down toward the stored position and see if it comes back (mine did, in green). If so, this cable is likely what you need. The part number for the cable is TCE 244342, and with shipping it ran about $30. Well worth it to keep this camera going. Order from Thomson Consumer Parts at 800-338-0376. As of this week they had about a hundred left in inventory. Good luck!

I give this more of a 3 1/2 stars...

I recently began looking into home video surveillance and home automation and acquired some products from a different manufacturer that lets you control video, thermostats, doors, lights, etc.. through a smartphone. My issue with that set of products is the need for monthly subscription to use it as well as the high prices of the components. I was very excited when I got the opportunity to try the Belkin video camera as it was cheaper and does not require a monthly subscription. Sure, it doesn't have all the home automation features that the other system has but I was more concerned with the video monitoring anyway. Overall I am pleased with how it works but there is definitely room for improvement.

Getting the camera up and running was actually quite easy and did not require me to hook it up to a computer or my home router. I simply connected it to my phone as a wifi connection, followed the instructions and then flipped a switch on the back of the camera to go into video mode. The app I downloaded to control it was for my Iphone 4S. Initially, when the first picture came up I was terribly disappointed in the quality. It looked like complete haze. That's when I realized that the box had been outside for a while and the lens was simply covered in fog. I wiped it down and it looked much better.

The video quality while viewing it over a wi-fi network on my Iphone was very good. The camera angle is very wide so I can get a good portion of my first floor including my front door. You can modify the quality of the video through the app so if you have less bandwidth, it will send a lower quality stream. However, even at its best quality, its only 640x480. Over a 3G connection, I had to manually turn down the video quality in order for it to be displayed but I didn't really notice much of a degradation in quality. Guessing it's because the iphone screen is so small that it really doesn't matter.

Here are the things I like about the camera

1. Cheaper than others I looked at. Compared to the Nexia line of cameras, this is priced much better

2. No subscription required to use it

3. Quality is about as good as the Nexia ones I use

4. Night vision is pretty good. All black and white but pretty clear

5. Sound!!!! Yes, this has the ability to stream audio as well which my nexia camera does not

6. Recording to the Iphone rather than some cloud server that limits your space

7. Like my more expensive solution, this does e-mail alerts based on motion

Here are the things that can be improved

1. The video is severely delayed and choppy. This does not produce "real time" video like the nexia and seems to only capture a frame or two every few seconds regardless of what type of connection I am on

2. Manual adjustment is annoying. This seems like it could be an easy update to the app to allow the app to automatically adjust the quality settings when bandwidth is limited. Waiting for a a minute or two and then getting a "sorry" message is annoying. Please build in auto adjust for this.

3. Load times can be long compared to other camera I have.

Like I said, more of a 3 and a half stars with the ability for this to be a 4 star if they can improve the video fps and the bandwidth detection. If those can be addressed either in software or a newer camera, this could be my solution for video surveillance around my house. Will be a lot cheaper than paying a monthly fee for something that does the same thing!

I foster dogs and got this camera to watch them when I'm out of the house. It's really great for my needs. I put it on my mantle in my living room and the view is pretty wide so I can see the whole room. I have an iphone and nexus7 and it works on both. I setup the notifications and was getting them every few minutes when the dogs moved, so I stopped using it but it seemed to work really well.

The only reason I'm giving it a 4 not a 5 is the audio could be better.

I was looking for a simple camera for home security purpose, I am a simple user, I just want something easy to set up and easy to use.

This Camera fits the bill. Originally, I was having a problem in set up. Came to find out, It was due to the slowness of my DSL, (you got what you pay for in sellecting Verizon). After a few click to adjust the resolution, it worked fine.

I have tested it for two days, day and night, both works really well. I only want to take a look a look at my home and see if my kids are okay, This satifies my need. I am not looking for a 24/7 security system, but something that I can click on my cell phone and instantly checking on my kids and make sure they are okay.

I'll start with what is good about this camera:

1. Small, reasonably well built.

2. Good night vision. I can see across the room for about 20 ft in total darkness.

3. Easy set up: hint...when setting up, put the camera as close to your wifi router as possible. The signal strength is poor, and it can take for ever to connect, and usually doesn't connect at all. Other than that, set up is as simple as can be.

4. With good connection, the camera is very stable. I've had it running 24/7 for a week now without issue.

5. Motion detector image capture...email notification works well.

Why I wouldn't use this camera?

1. Wifi strength is poor. I'm placing it 50 feet away, granted there are 2 interior walls in between, and signal drops off constantly.

2. Although the camera does have an ethernet port, the port is non-functional...compounding the weak wifi signal issue.

3. Software sucks... You can't view the camera on a computer. You must use their iphone app. The app sucks. Worse of any camera app out there. First off, it crashes all the time. Second even on 4g LTE it has a hard time pulling videos through. I'd have to downgrade the video quality substantially to get a video connection. Third is it hardly works on Ipads...crashes more often than on the iphone.

4. Worse, most irritating part is that this camera is proprietary. You can't view the camera with Blue iris or any other app/program. This makes point #3 even worse. I'm not an expert by any means, but I simply can't get this camera to behave like a typical IP cam.

5. Poor value. This camera doesn't tilt, pan, or zoom....for $100 bucks I'd go elsewhere.

What would I recommend? I now have done a ton of research and own 2 other systems...the Foscam 8910 and the Logitech Alert. Here's my opinion of the 3 system for what it's worth:

1. My favorite is the Logitech Alert. You want this if you have a newer house with normal electrical wiring. By that I mean not spliced, added on, modified, etc. The construction quality is best of the 3 by a mile. Image quality during day, dim, and dark times are the best by far. Set up is simple and brainless. Signal connection and stability is much better than wifi. Open architecture means you can view your camera through VLC, Blue iris, etc...so if Logitech goes belly up, your camera is still functional. What I don't like about the Alert system is that there is no tilt/pan/zoom....false advertisement. The software only support 6 cameras, although you can view more if you use Blue iris. The app does suck, but you can use Blue iris which works great on both iphone and ipad. These are more expensive (hint....much cheaper if you use the 'configure' option on Logitech's site)but are the best out there.

2. Foscam is pretty good. Image quality is on par with the Belkin. There's true tilt and pan, the ethernet port works, stable, fast, and the software and flexibility is just unbeatable.

Let me start with the summary, since the review is a very long one. This is an indoor camera. Great picture quality (non HD), very easy to set up and operate, works well with Android tablet (I don't have any iOS device to test with, but I'd imagine it works just as well, or better) and you can let any number of friends view the camera they don't need to own a camera. But there is one potential security issue with the camera.

The flaw with this camera could be a deal breaker for some people, so I will mention it first. You need to create an account with Belkin, and anyone with access to the account will be able able access your camera.

There is no way around that if you want to use this camera. You cannot operate it in "local only" mode (connect to the camera directly). There should be a way, but Belkin is not telling us what it is. If I find out through reverse engineering, I will update this review.

Why is this important? If someone manages to guess your password, or if Belkin's security is compromised, you have no way of preventing people from looking into your house unless you turn it off. With other IP cameras, the password is only stored locally on the device, and is much less prone to being hacked. With some network expertise, you can create VPN tunnels that you need to connect to before you can view those type of cameras. You don't have such a choice with this one.

This won't be an issue if the camera is being set up in a public area (for example, a restaurant). At home, however, I feel uncomfortable knowing that a stranger could be peering into my house.

OK, now that this is out of the way, let us go on to the other features of this camera.

Build quality : The camera is nicely constructed, smooth plastic shell that fits nicely together. The base is weighed down by a heavy metal washer at the base, so it will not topple over easily. The power supply cord is long 10 feet (I measured). The stated output is 5V, 1.5A.

Setup : the camera is very easy to configure, as long as you have an Android or iOS smartphone or a tablet. There is a little switch at the back of the camera the only switch there, in fact. In the "up" position, it is in setup mode. In the "down" position, it is in camera mode. You should have received it in setup mode.

When in setup mode, the camera powers up (by plugging in the power cable) and presents a wireless access point for your device to connect to. Use your phone or tablet's wifi setup to connect to it. There's no password. After you're connected, launch the app, which will guide you through the rest of the setup. If you messed something up, exit the app and launch it again. It will guide you through the steps all over again connect to your home wifi router and register an account with Belkin or log in to an existing account.

Operation : Using the camera only requires you to flip the switch over to camera mode after you're done with the setup. Run the app, log in, and you're presented with a list of your cameras. Click on it and you can view it. You can also view the camera through your computer's browser by going to netcam dot belkin dot com (sorry for the minor obfuscation Amazon seems to block most URLs I type in). In Firefox I'm prompted to install the iSecurity+ plugin, but I can use it with the old video player.

(Edit 3/26 : n let me know in the comments below that it seems no longer possible to create an account from the login page. Not sure if this is temporary I will check with Belkin and see what they say. For the moment the following paragraph is no longer valid)

You can create an account on a browser and view cameras that other people share with you even if you don't own a Netcam. Anyone you share the camera with will need to do this. There are also public cameras available. At the time of this writing, there are two public netcams listed both from the Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority.

(Edit 3/26 : above paragraph is currently invalid I need to find out from Belkin if it is permanently disabled)

From the app or the browser, you can view your own cameras, your friends' cameras, and invite friends (by sending them an email) to view your cameras, and to revoke access to your camera. You can also set your own camera to "private" mode (meaning you're the only account that can view it).

Infra-red works well, but in auto mode, the IR comes on whenever light level drops low enough, even when the camera is not being viewed. Alternatively you can set IR explicitly on or off (need to go into setup screen to do this). You cannot control the IR that someone shares with you, and motion detection will not work in the dark if IR is off. The IR LEDs gives off a faint reddish glow when in operation that's visible when it is very dark.

There is no local (in-camera) recording capability. Recording is done by your phone using the app.

Email motion detection alerts appear to work OK. You get an email with two photos when motion is detected. There doesn't appear to be a way to throttle the number of emails sent, so if you happen to have the camera pointed at a busy scene, be prepared for a flood of emails. A slowly changing scene will not trigger motion detection for example, shadows cast by the sun moving slowly across the room will not trip it.

Performance : The camera has a very clear picture and sound is decent. There is a small delay in video (about 0.25 seconds) and a much longer one in the audio (about 2 seconds). I was able to connect from outside my home network to the camera without needing to configure anything on my home router. In fact, I had the camera connected to a wireless router, that's connected to another wireless router (two layers of NAT), both with uPNP and port forwarding disabled. This suggests that the camera is connecting to Belkin's servers instead of the other way around.

Power consumption : I measured this with a Kill-a-Watt. Power consumption is very low. I measured it at 2W when the IR is off, and 3W when IR is on. Changing frame rate, picture quality, and other parameters didn't affect power consumption in any way that can be measured by the Kill-a-Watt. I left it on for 24 hours and it reported a total energy consumption of 0.05 kWh. Assuming IR is left on auto, this device will consume under 2 kWh in a month less than 50 cents for the typical user.

The power plug can take 100-240V @ 50-60Hz. The output is 5V 1.5A.

So, again, in summary has great image quality (640 x 480), has sound, really easy to set up, it just works without having to configure anything with your home router, but the password is stored at Belkin's server.

Don't buy into the marketing, digital cable quality means little. Digital signals are binary, its either on or off (unlike analog signls, which have lots of variance inbetween).
