I bought this camera more than a month ago and have been surprised by versatility of the camera and quality of the images.

It makes great shots in almost any lighting conditions I tried at night, indoors, sunsets, and snow. Colors are natural.

Its macro mode works great.

It has A/S/M manual controls which is very useful for experienced photographers.

It has exposure compensation of +-2EV with steps of 0.5 EV and manual ISO selection.

It has spot metering as well as multi-zone metering.

It's not large and very easy to carry.

To tell you the truth once I bought this camera I started to have doubts whether I need my Nikon N75 SLR since this small Samsung camera almost matches features and quality of a higher end SLR cameras.

Minor downsides include occasional difficulty focusing in low light which can be overcome by using fixed distance settings (1M, 2M and infinity).

It also lacks manual focus found in V50 model.

Depth of field is very good (sometimes too good for close-up shots making it difficult to blur the background) but this is common to most of compact digital cameras.

Bottom line I highly recommend this camera and think that it could suit beginners as well as more advanced photographers.

My wife and I got this camera for Christmas in 2004, and it has become the favorite of our camera menagerie. The small size makes it way easier to take on trips than our SLR cameras. It's also very durable I dropped it in the airport whole trying to take a picture and everything stayed intact!

We took this camera to Cozumel with us and captured some incredible images with it. There are so many features on this camera, more than a novice photographer will ever get around to using, let alone perfecting which is nice because it gives way more options for taking great, creative photos than other cameras! We have had this camera for coming up on a year now, and i am still learning new things about it!

Bottom line, I love this camera. I am an avid photographer and my wife often has to wrestle this one away from me to get her turn behind the lens! A truly amazing camera for novice or experienced photogrpahers!

Well, I took this camera, as my older one was giving troubles. And I can clearly make out its superior features on the very first day, and sitting down typing this today itself, as I want the future customers YOU to benefit out of my feelings on the very first day..

I have been photographing since my early teens and am an avid photographer, having operated upon a range of old-model manual cameras in mid 80's, until recently when I came accross a digital camera which I bought last year. However, having felt the necessity to procure a better quality, I bought this one this year, and I am highly satisfied with its performance, given the size and price-line.

I tried shooting in all sorts of conditions on my very first day with it: daylight, cloud, indoors, night-time, closepus, macro-mode..and I find the quality very superior to my earlier camera (s), of comparable specifications..

Images are crisp clear; I even captured the US flag on the empire state building using the zoom feature, and the output is as lively and clear , I didnt even imagine!!

The manual mode along with the auto mode gives amateur as well as experienced one's equal ease and freedom to handle and operate his one!!

Though the dimensions and weight are bit more, but its worth for the quality of foto it produces..

I would highly recommend you to go for this, if you are planning to shop for a mid-range camera in terms of price, and expect an outcome of a higher-end camera !!

Go ahead, get it.. and enjoy photographing, falling in love with it on the very first day !!

Little camera....lotta fun!!!

I bought this camera a few years ago and have loved it ever since. The pictures come out very clear. I choose to have mine printed at the local CVS and I edit them ahead of time. Though it takes an extra second for the zoom to frame the shot it's worth it.

Having two toddler nieces I've been able to document many special moments, giggles, and smiles!!!

HDmi Extender Over 2 CAT5E

First of all, this product does work overall, BUT setting it up was rather complicated.

Okay the first issue is the instructions are thin and not very clear. I first set this thing up using cat 5e cables. The video had lots of distortion and after reading further, it said cat 6 cables would have better performance. Well after installing 2 cat 6 cables, it wouldn't work at all. It took me an hour to figure out that it only worked for with a single cat6 cable in the AV Signal port, and a cat5e cable in the Control port. This seemed awfully strange to me but that's the only way I can get this thing to work. I don't know if my device is defective, but this was my experience.

The second issue is that the power supply for this device is on the display end and not the source end, which I think is backwards. I set this up using a projector and I had to run the power supply through my ceiling to an outlet in the attic. I think it would have made more sense to put the power port on the source end because that's where the dvd players and other devices are where this power supply can be better hidden. This made setting it up more difficult for me as I got dirty and dusty crawling through my ceiling twice. The first time is when I ran the power for the projector, then after I bought this, had to do it AGAIN!

In addition to having trouble setting it up, I still haven't been able to get the IR blaster part to work. I followed the instructions to the letter and the IR through function still doesn't work. I will be calling tech support to investigate the issue further. For the time being, I have ran my own IR emitter to my device for remote control.

My overall judgment since I don't need the IR blaster function and since I finally did get it set up and have a crystal clear picture, is favorable. I like it, although I may try to find a more reliable and easier product to set up for my other rooms. My opinion is its a good value if you can get what you need out of it, which I most certainly have. I'm happy with it.

I bought this back in May, hooked it up and, no problem. It worked like a charm. I then decided I would try a couple other single cable models. I wanted to see if I could get by without pulling two cables. I bought two different brands. One just refuses to work, giving me a DVI/HDMI single is blocked message. The other one works but continuously drops the signal. So I've decided to go back to this model. Just bought my second. I'll take reliability over saving a cable pull any day.

Usually when I buy off-brand electronics to fill an obscure or unusual requirement I end up with junk that finds its way in to my used electronics bin in the garage. So it's pretty nice when I run across something that does exactly what I needed it to do, and well, like this device. With stuff like this, sometimes simply working is enough for high praise :)

I've had mine for 6 months now, connected via two 110 foot/36m cable runs from my upstairs media room to my downstairs bedroom TV. Naturally, the hardest part is running the cables and for many people that will be the showstopper detail (in my case I already had them for an older component video based extender). You really do need two cables to take advantage of the device although I was able to get it to work with one at 720p with 2 channel audio and no IR for a test. The device is HDMI 1.3a compliant (full 10.2gb bandwidth, very important!), and at 110' feet near the max run listed it outputs perfect 1080p video and audio to my downstairs display. It might as well be hooked directly to my HTPC upstairs.

And best of all it's one of the only units I've seen that supports IR extension as well. A lot of people overlook this little detail, forgetting that if the unit they are extending *from* isn't in line of site they have no way to control it, or use RF extenders (which are inferior to the over the wire system used here) but this is a major feature of this device. Even better, the unit itself powers the IR repeater no need to buy an external IR power supply (as is the case with a Cat5e Component extender I replaced with this unit) and comes with both the transmitter "bug" and the receiver "bug". You hook the receiver in one end at the display you are extending to, the transmitter at the other pointed at the device you are extending from, and walla it's just like your remote is in front of it. That's literally how well it works like you were upstairs pointing the remote directly at the device. There's no lag whatsoever.

It may seem a little pricey, but it's quality, and compared to the component video extender I replaced it with it's cheap :). Don't make the mistake of buying a cheaper unit here because you think it will be "good enough"! I first bought a pair of HDMI wallplates (thinking I would use RF for the remote dumb) and they ended up in the useless electronics bin. This unit does exactly what you need and is worth $200. There may be other ways to extend a full HDMI 1.3a cable 110 feet to a display on the other side of your house while allowing you to control the source with your normal IR remote, and do so reliably, but not this cheap.

I own a Fuji 3600 and it is an amazing camera and when I bought it, it cost about $350. The E500 by Fuji is a camera that is almost an equivalent to the 3600, but cost about half the price. The E500 offers 4megapixel quality, which is more than enough for any normal user. There are 9 different shooting modes, and then there is also a black and white option, and a chrome option. The quality of the LCD screen is the best I have seen on a digital camera, it is much better than the grainy crap that is offered on the HP digitals. The camera has a movie mode that includes sound and it takes an alright video (If you want a movie, buy a camcorder). An interesting thing about the E500 is how it stores pictures on the XD card it uses. I have some pictures already taking some space up on the card and when it tells how many shots are left with the different qualities, it says that there are 194 1mp pics available and 144 2mp pics available. The difference should be larger, but the quality of all the shots are great, no matter the quality setting. The camera also has a very good night mode that will get a ton of use. The pop up flash is a common feature on many of the digital cameras and it isn't a problem (unless you are too lazy to have your finger punch a button). The worst thing about the camera is the time between shots. It takes about 8-10 seconds after the flash of the first shot went off before you can take your second picture. The zoom on the camera is very good. The camera overall is great and I would recommend it for anyone. I bought mine at Niceelectronics.com for about $188 dollars (total including shipping and handling), much cheaper than the advertised Amazon price. And don't waste your time looking at Canon, because their cameras have a fault that is much too consistent for my taste. In many of their cameras the lens will no longer return to the camera and it will say error F18. Three of my colleagues have had the same issue at some point or another with the Canon cameras. Fuji and Nikon are the best way to go when looking for a reliable digital camera. This is a great camera.

I was looking for a digital camera that had an equivilent lense to a 28mm. I was discouraged by so many nifty cameras that only went down to a 38mm equivilent. The difference here with that wide angle is phenominal. The biggest point I'd say is indoor, close up (not macro, but a party for example). Capturing a group of people at a close distance is much easier than having to take steps backwards up to fit every one into the photo.

A must have is the docking station. For one thing it includes a couple of rechargable batteries (the docking station is also the charging unit). A big plus for me was not having the hassle of finding the USB cable whenever I wanted to upload pictures to the computer. I find it very convenient. The docking station is not a significant expense, and you're getting an awesome camera at a really great price.

I recently purchased a Fuji E500, and it has been great. The only reason any of my pictures turn out bad is because I am an idiot who doesn't know how to work a camera or because I don't have something to steady my hand with. The "macro" mode takes amazing pictures, and the other modes do good as well.

It has lots of options that I don't play with because I don't know what they mean, and if you don't really know much about cameraing the instructions don't help much. The presets work very well, however.

The only bad thing I have to say about the camera is that the zoom can get grainy when it is maxed, but that happens with any digital zoom I hear.

Buy one. The Amazon shops have them pretty cheap for what you get.

This camera is a great size! I love it! Takes excellent pictures, fits perfectly in your diaper bag (I'm a new mom). Colors are so vibrant, love being able to take black and white or color just by changing a button. I took some black and white photos of my son's feet and blew them up to an 8x10. I get so many compliments on that photo. I highly recommend this camera. It is easy to use, the user manual and software are well designed. The only suggestion I make is invest in rechargeable double A batteries. Also love the larger LCD screen, makes viewing photos easy. We took this on several vacations and have used it to make holiday photo cards.

Nikon Coolpix S5 6MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

I recently purchased the Nikon Coolpix S5 to replace my ailing Sony Cybershot P-8. The P-8 was my 3rd Cybershot and I'd never had a Nikon before.

While browsing for new cameras, I'd settled on the Canon IXY 700 as a replacement. However, my friend motioned me over to look at the S5. I'd looked at some of the other Coolpix models and didn't like the menu setup. I figure the menu is something that is going to be used a lot, so I wasn't going to consider any cameras with hard-to-use menus. I'd disqualified a Kodak EasyShare model earlier for that very reason; wanted to buy American, but alas, the menu was horrible. First impressions make or break a sale. And my first impression upon seeing the S5's menu was that it was very easy to use. And it has been.

The camera takes fairly decent pictures. However, not much of a difference vs. my previous Sony P-8 (3.2mp). I was hoping for a bit of an improvement, but didn't really see anything that impressed me overall that was "different."

The root of my review, though, is the design flaw that I believe this camera has. I'd taken several pictures at a going-away party recently and noticed that it looked like there were water splotches on the lens as there were white stars in the pictures. I took the camera to a photo lab and they blew the lens off in the case of any dust being on it. No water marks were visible on the lens (and the white splotches/stars in the pictures were never in the same place twice). When that didn't fix the problem, a photographer friend suggested that there might be dust on the sensor; although that doesn't explain the spots being in different places in each picture. I should note that not every picture has these spots. The common element seems to be that they are all evening, low-light situations using the red-eye flash function.

I took the S5 back to the place of purchase and exchanged for an identical unit. However, the problem has not gone away. A fellow from work noticed that the majority of the spots appear on the right side of the photos. Rarely are any (or any significant number) on the left side. Also, we were speaking of distance to object regarding the different photos, but near (~3 ft.) and far (~15-20 ft.) both resulted in similar splotchy problems. At this point, I suggested that perhaps the flash was too close to the lens and the rapid multiple flashing of the red-eye flashes was causing the bursts/splotches. My co-worker also suggested the lens being small may have played a factor in that, too.

That's where I'm at now. I believe my theory about the flash being too close to the lens is pretty close to the mark. I've never had this problem with any of my previous Sony Cybershots (and their lens to flash proximity was greater than the Nikon S5's).

As a result, I believe I'm going to request a refund and go with my original choicethe Canon IXY 700.

I did have one more nitpick regarding the menuit takes a little menu jogging to turn off the photo info details on the viewer (something that was a one-button deal on the P-8). But other than that, the S5 has been very pleasant to use. I'm disappointed to have found this flaw as the Canon's a little heaver and little thicker than the S5.

So overall, it's a very nice camera. If the red-eye flash + low-light problem was fixed, I'd have no problems recommending this to anyone. As it is, I'd suggest finding a different model in the meantime as this is definitely a deal-breaker to have splotches/bursts/spots in one's photos. Simply not enough time in the day to digitally airbrush every single picture with these problems.

I've had the Nikon S5 for about three months now. I bought it because I'd been looking for a slim digital camera that had a decent resolution, good battery life and was easy to use and carry around. I also thought Nikon, being a camera and optics company would offer me a product superior to the many other digital cameras offered elsewhere. I'd be the first to admit that I'm not super-savvy when it comes to photography but I've had my fair share of cameras, both digital and film.

I would NOT recommend this camera.

1. The picture quality is substandard to say the least. My Sony DSC-P10 from 4 years ago with a 2.1 mega-pixel resolution takes better pictures. Pictures are very grainy.

2. This camera is loaded with features. However it's extremely difficult to coerce the camera to capture a decent picture. I took it on a ski trip, set the camera to the "Snow" mode and resulted in a bunch of underexposed pictures (at different times of day, with varying levels of sunlight)

3. The camera takes an excessively long time to auto-focus resulting in one missing even the simplest of opportunities.

4. CUSTOMER SERVICE IS LESS THAN ADEQUATE

My camera hung at some point during the second month. By hung I mean it wouldn't move beyond an error screen (in Nikon Customer Service rep's words... something he had never seen before). I had to mail it in to get it fixed. Nikon Service refused to pay shipping because that's their policy (even for a two month old camera that suddenly refuses to work). It took numerous phone calls to locate my camera and the status of service. They mail (snail-mail) you your service order number that is used to locate the status of your service request.

I received the camera back two weeks after I had sent it in to their NY facility. The error was gone but now each time the lens moves back and forth to focus (either auto or manual) there's a loud ticking sound. One that can be heard at an arm's length away, one that would put a grandfather clock to shame. Another call to Nikon Digital Tech Support center resulted in me being informed that since there were moving parts in the camera, noise is to be expected (even though the noise did not exist prior to sending it in for service). The clicking noise is so loud that the Nikon rep could hear it through the phone. He insisted that since he had the same camera with him and it too made the clicking sound that this was normal for a digital camera. I pointed out that this might be a design problem or a flaw with the camera which was something the rep was not willing to entertain. An argument and call transfer to a supervisor later, I was told that I would have to call Nikon Service directly and arrange for the camera to be shipped back to them (presumably, again at my cost).

Also, the many times I've tried to contact Nikon Service, their phone lines are incessantly busy. I was advised by Nikon Digital Technical Support that I could either keep trying for 20 to 30 minutes or if I could wait I could try back in a couple of hours.

Bad camera, EXTREMELY BAD customer service. I WOULD NOT recommend this camera.

I've had the S5 about two weeks now and payed about $150 less than the S1 I bought a year and a half ago...that one went swimming with me by accident. So far, I've notice a few substantial improvemements. 1) faster time from button pushing to picture. So much so that I've been waiting for it to take the picture long after it already has and I'd missed it. 2) Considerable improvement in the movie mode (15fps before to 30fps now) and the playback no longer requires a microscope. 3) the definition has improved even more so than the 5.1mp to 6.0 megapixel bump would suggest. Lastly, the controls are far better positioned and thought out for ease of use.

OVERALL: When the D200 is too big, this S5 is pretty durn close to perfect

Yes, I was seduced by the "Nikon" moniker. A very nice little camera with a fatal flaw. In flash mode (which it uses a lot, given the slow lens and slow ISO ratings), approximately 1/4 of all images are ruined by white blobs, white halos, white circles, white comets, or other white artifacts that cover portions of the image. They show up randomly, with little rhyme or reason. Appears to be some sort of camera design flaw that allows flash light to bounce around inside the lens system. The artifacts move around in location from photo to photo, and are not the sort of thing you can fix easily in a photo editing program, so it's a deadly flaw, particularly when they pock-mark your subject's face. I received mine new from Cameta via Amazon, and the problem was visible within the first few photos. A test of the camera over a few hours' shooting had me tossing out dozens of photos. I'm kicking myself that I believed the "professional reviewers" of the camera, who seem to have remained blissfully unaware of this basic and glaring flaw. I noticed, but wishfully ignored, other users posting to Amazon who warned of this problem--what a sap! Next time I'll put more weight on the Amazon reviewers' opinions. PS: Since writing this review, I've had a reader contact me to tell me, in all seriousness, that what are appearing in my photos are likely the souls of dead people and ghosts, who show up as white orbs, splotches, and artifacts! (Who ya gonna call? GHOST-BUS-TERS!) This has left me puzzling over why dead people only show up when the flash is turned on? And why can't my Canon Digital Rebel SLR see souls of the departed--do only Nikons have the ability to photograph ghosts? Well, who am I to say, I don't know much about the hereafter or the ultramundane--but if you want a camera for ghost hunting, the S5 is your huckleberry. You'll have more "ghosts" than you'll know what to do with!

I just bought a Nikon S5 and it hasn't been out of my pocket since it arrived in the mail. This is my 3rd Nikon but first digital camera. I am struggling with the limitations of digital over film but I think this camera is great. It produces beautiful images and I find it easy to manipulate. The camera is small and the photographer has to be careful not to get fingers in the photo as it has limited space to keep hold of it while taking the picture. A person with big hands might not be comfortable with this camera. The LCD is huge which is fantastic, but the biggest drawback is that the LCD is difficult to see in bright sunlight. All of the features are easily accessible, and the menu is reasonably intuitive. Like most digital cameras there is a maddening delay between pressing the button to take the picture and the camera actually capturing the subject. After the 2-3 flashes for red eye reduction, many of the people in my photos have moved onto a different expression or react to the intensity of the flash. The body design and the metal case make it tough, I have smacked it around kayaking and rock climbing and it is holding up under the abuse. I gave it 4 stars because it's not perfect but it's a nice little camera.

I am a novice to security cameras but decided to give this a try because it had all the features I wanted. The directions for wired setup were good and the camera gives a very clear picture, decent audio and the panning/tilt works good. However, I need to be able to view this remotely and wirelessly. The ability is there,but it has taken me several tries to almost have it working. I have some networking experience but this is a little above me. The net book I wanted to receive the signal does not have a powerful enough adapter to pick up the signal from the router so I had to use a notebook I wasn't planning on tying up. Possibly my lask of experience is the problem, but I would recommend having someone set this up that knew what they were doing.

Update: as of 6/20 I still have not been able to remotely access this camera. It does take very nice snapshots of what you can see wired.

The Esky C5900 camera has a lot of potential.

Pro: You can remotely view the camera with your smart phone (I am using a Samsung Galaxy S2) and you can rotate the camera with your phone. It will also send you emails when motion is detected. I also put in t 32G sd card and that works well. I have set the camera up in different locations (using wifi) and it works.

Con: I emailed into Esky for assistance and have never received a reply. One big problem is about once a day the camera needs to be rebooted i.e. un-plugged and plugged back in, and you can not do this remotely.

Update: Well it looks like despite, my 5 star review, they didn't send out whichever free gift they were promising. So I won't be able to share what exactly they were bribing reviews with. Do yourself a favor and stay away from these H.264 pieces of junk. Your maximum character limit for a password on one of these devices is 7 characters. If you enter more than that, you'll have to reset your camera to be able to access it again.

Let's see... I guess it depends on how you want to use this. It works fine in IE and with it's included software. If you intend to view this on an Android phone, think again. Ipcam viewer Lite/Pro can't use the send audio feature on this cam, and receiving audio is only in the Pro(paid) version. Worse, if your app can't use the rtsp stream (H.264) than you will be using the HTTP stream which seems to get less that 1/fps. Google it, many people are having this problem (it doesn't matter if it's connected wireless or wired, on the local lan or over the web). TinyCam Monitor Pro can't receive audio or send audio and you will have to find a camera profile that uses a similar HTTP feed. Again, you will get less than 1/fps since these programs cannot access the rtsp stream.

Esky does have an android app that is not on the market, you have to download it from their link. I haven't tried it because they force you to register for an account with them and I don't believe there app will work with my other 3 cameras (non-Esky) that I have in the house. I do not want to use 2 different apps on my phone to access all of my cameras.

Blue Iris can access the rtsp stream and gets up to 30fps. I was able to use the PTZ functionality of the cam but the commands seemed to lag. The audio functions would not work.

Now here is the best part. In my box, there was a card for a "rewards" program. If I put up a five star review on Amazon or Ebay, they will send me a free gift "I'm sure to like". Bribes? I googled and could not find out what the "reward" is.

Also, I have updated the firmware to the latest one available. The cam seems to reset itself alot and when I have it hooked up wirelessly, the framerates from the the other cams on my network (both wireless and wired) seem to drop very low whenever I access this cam's http stream. My network is a 1000mbps network with 1 router, 1 x 1 gigabit switch.

Bottom line, most apps are not compatible with the new H.264 cams. If you want to be a beta tester and wait for this functionality to be implemented in other applications then get this cam. Ok, I don't know why others are giving this camera a low review. Perhaps they haven't played with it enough. I have only had this camera for about two weeks. I gave it to myself for a birthday present cause it was time to get rid of my old Nikon 3.2 mp camera and I am about to spend a semester in France and throughout Europe doing some field work for my Master's thesis.

First of all, the sheer size of this camera is amazing (its smaller than my ipod video). I was originally going to get the s10 but was unable to find it (I guess they're not selling it anymore), but quite honestly 2 mp difference is no big deal. 12mp is more than enough. I have gotten so many compliments on this camera so far just because of its size and the fact that it has 12mp rather than 10 or even 8.

I think the picture quality is outstanding! I have been playing with it practically everyday taking pictures of anything and everything to get a good test out of it. So far, all these pictures look very very nice. One thing I like to do with cameras is play around with its settings. This camera, although it has a Best Shot Feature (pre-programmed settings for certain situations), I'm the type of person who likes to experiment with those settings anyway. This camera allows you to do that with the best shot feature and it has a manual feature so that you can adjust everything! I hate cameras that won't let you mess with its pre-programmed settings cause let's face it they don't always get it right! Then the best part is, you can save these settings that you've created and the camera will remember them for you.

One thing I see in these reviews is that the picture quality is bad. The s12 (as I'm sure with other casios) has a "quick shutter" setting. This setting will immediately take the picture before it has a chance to focus (why you would do that I'm not sure). You can turn this off! That was one of the first things I changed when I started playing with it.

The HD videos this camera takes are very impressive! I have posted a couple of them on Youtube (look under my name: vsa23). They look fantastic on our 52" HDTV! Have not run into any problems like the sound not being in sync with the video.

My ONLY complaint about this camera is that when the camera is on "Best Shot Auto Focus" (the lowest, easiest, setting for grandma), the focus makes very loud almost scratching noises because it is constantly focusing. I took the camera back, exchanged it for a new one, and even tried the store's two displays and they all seem to do that. Perhaps this is something that will change with the later s12s that come out. But in all honesty, I don't use that setting anyway (not that I'm a pro or anything), so it doesn't bother me too much.

All in all, I am very happy with this little camera! It does everything I need it to do (which is really to primarily take pictures) and it offers so much more than I need at the same time (make up setting, dynamic photo, smile shutter, face detection, youtube capture, and more!). If you're looking for a very nice camera with lots of features in a small compact travel-friendly camera then this one is a very good choice. I usually shoot with a DSLR and wanted to get a new small camera to carry around and replace my 5 year old Pentax Optio S4i. My main criteria for picking the camera were weight, HD video capture, image quality, and ease of use. I've since updated this list to include image stabilization.

The casio s12 is one of the smallest cameras you can get. Reviews also said the camera was snappy. Looking at reviewer's test shots showed it had very good image quality, so I picked one up.

I wanted to like this camera. I tried to like this camera. But in the end the camera is just too unreliable to be used as a point and shoot. The images typically look very good on the camera's screen, but on a large monitor they were often under saturated, auto white balance was off, and most importantly they were frequently out of focus. With this camera, you need to pre-focus with a 1/2 shutter press before taking a picture. Far too often, the camera would never focus even in sunlight. The only time there was reliable focus was when the subject was relatively close to the camera (a couple yards or less away) and cooperative. When the focus worked correctly, the picture quality was still not perfect (harsh chromatic aberration) but was admittedly much better than average. I cannot figure out why the focus is so hit or miss. Perhaps it is operator error or lack of image stabilization. It may even be that the camera defaults to focus a few feet away when its autofocus algorithm fails. This would be fine for taking a picture of your friends sitting at a table with you, but it does not work if you are zoomed-in on your kids playing in the yard.

The HD video quality was fairly good for nearby subjects. It did suffer from lack of any image stabilization technology and it is doubtful anyone would be using this camera for shooting video with a tripod. With a camera this small I really think you need some form of image stabilization.

I will return the Casio and try one of the new Canon's or the Lumix FX-35/37/48 (or even the new Pentax w80). I would only recommend the Casio for someone who primarily shoots nearby, cooperative subjects. Those images seem to come out OK most of the time and even excellent once in a while. This camera would not be my recommendation if you want to capture your kids candidly. If you like the Casio style or feature set, perhaps the Casio Z400 will be better since it has image stabilization, a longer zoom, and perhaps some updated firmware.

Positives:

* Great set of 'best shot' modes, including a unique whiteboard and business card mode which can replace your scanner

* Unlimited length HD video capture in AVI format (good for Windows) at 24fps. The lack of 30fps in HD mode wasn't noticeable.

* Good build quality with excellent LCD screen

* Good low-light focus lamp

* Potential to take some very good pictures

Negatives:

* Very unreliable focus and sometimes unreliable white balance

* Terrible printed user manual (but the online manual is very good)

* No standard cable connections on camera for USB

* No digital video out from the camera

* Some of the in-camera features just did not work reliably. Most notable is the feature where you can subtract the background from around your subject and place the subject in another image.

* Lens not very wide (~36mm)

This Casio EX-S12 was chosen over other compact cameras in the US market, due to its tiny size and price. My intention is to find a super compact but decent camera for my wife to travel with, where a full size DSLR is not desirable.

The camera started up quickly but does take about 2-3 seconds between shots (not bad considering that I had the automatic flash on and it'll take time to charge up the capacitor). The buttons and the menu are intuitive and easy to figure out. The camera is packed with features that I'll never use, such as BestShot, Youtube, Dynamic Photo, smile recognition, etc. On the other hand, I do find the historgram and the tripod mount highly benficial.

Battery life seems to be good. Although it didn't make sense to have a compact camera, but the battery charger is as big as the camera itself, with a long power cable to the outlet. It's a generic detachable cable so I'll replace it with a shorter one (or shorten the one provided). I've not tried if I can charge the battery by using the USB cable only.

As for the resulting photos, it does a great job with portraits as I'm impressed with the smooth and natural skin tone that it produces. I had no problem with noise with the normal ISO setting. It produces beautiful, peaceful pastile color for landscape photos as well. I did not play with any camera setting to adjust the internal processing, but you'll probably need to do so if you want photos with more contrast and more punch. It's not an issue with me, since I can always post-process the files later via Photoshop. As with most point-n-shoot, too bad it doesn't create RAW file format.

I tend to use the wide side rather than telephoto with my photography style. Thus, I hardly use the zoom feature. This camera has the 36mm equivalent, which is about the normal human's view point so images aren't distorted much. Not an ultra-wide, but not bad.

The on camera flash is okay for a tiny camera, and the output is adjustable. I do rather see a PC port added with the future model, so I can shoot with an off-camera flash.

As for the HD video, it works fine. Originally, I tested it with an old SD card and was suspicious if audio and video were in sync. Later, I put in a better SDHC card and had no issue with the video. The video in HD mode started up quickly, but it's limited to 10 minute clips (due to size limitation of FAT32 file format as with other point-and-shoot?). You'll have to remember to find a break to stop-and-restart quickly before the 10 minute is up.

Be sure to get the biggest and fast SDHC card that you can get. My old 1GB SD card was filled quickly with about 7 minutes of HD video and few 12MP photos. Also, due to its tiny dimension, be sure to use the hand strap.

OK, here is the non-techie's verdict on this camera... I really like it and rate it a SOLID FOUR STARS !!!

I will leave the techie's to discuss all the pros and cons of the specs. In a nutshell, here are my thoughts:

1) It's definitely mini and fits easily in a shirt pocket.

So bring one along in your pocket and you'll always

be ready for a Kodak...oops! "Casio Moment"

2) I was all set to buy the silver one, but when they

took it out of the box, it looked way tooo shiny!

Like the color of bright, polished tin... so I

asked to see the other colors and bought the gold,

champagne, beer-colored one. It looks fantastic.

3) WITHOUT the manual, I played around with the MENU

and the various buttons and got everything working

to my liking within 30 minutes. And I am no

techie!

4) OUTPUT: Yes, the photos and videos ROCKED for this

mini-camera. Expensive, separate-lens, high-end

cameras will take BETTER photos, but these are

DEFINITELY VERY GOOD! Colors are vibrant!

5) BEST SHOT Pre-programmed settings for outdoors,

night, and about 20-other almost-any-event. This

is a fun gadget and let's you focus on the

subject/s while this little cam does all the

work.

6) PRICE: Definitely OK for all that you get in that

size!

7) C'MON !!!.. I said enough... go out and buy one!

In my opinion this is the best camera in this category. Before I buy any camera I review sample photos full size, which for this camera at 12mp is wall size, about 60 inches wide. I look for noise, detail and color. I have had this camera for a week and ran it through my tests and it did not disappoint. Noise in the blue sky is almost non-existent, something you would expect from an SLR. Detail in pretty good also. In daylight I just leave it in auto and it shoots awesome pictures. Indoors you could leave it in auto, but all your shots will be at 400 ISO which is starting to add noise at this level. I set it at 200 ISO indoors for near perfect noise free pictures.

I have tried some of the Best Shot settings and the landscape scenic setting is terrible, don't even bother using it because it messes up the saturation. The composite setting is cool that it pictures the subject in motion but there is not much use for it. I am yet to try all of the Best Shot settings, there is a lot of them.

Make-up function works perfectly, maybe too good. It has 12 levels of make-up. Makes my 79 year old mother look like she is 19. I would rather take pictures of the way things really are, but this is definitely a cool feature.

Low light performance seems really good, it is able to focus and take good shots.

HD video is really nice, though 24 fps is a bit choppy. You will need to learn how to take video at 24 fps. Basically you need to keep still and do not change direction too fast. The 640x480 is smoother at 30 fps and it looks pretty good also if there is enough light. One surprise for me is that it is able to zoom during video. It is not optical zoom during video it is digital zoom but it performs like optical zoom. There is no deterioration when in full zoom, and the manual states this also. This is great to be able to zoom in video. You can consider this optical video zoom since it performs the same as. The colors of the video are not as good as broadcast HDTV, but it seems almost as sharp in good lighting.

There is no photo editing software included with this camera, which is a shock to me since all my last cameras were Fujifilms and they include a great post processing software. I searched for a replacement software and found Photoscape, it is free and even better than Finepix software. At full resolution this Casio comes out with 5-6.8 mb picture file size. Well with the photoscape I can save in 70% jpg compression that brings down the file size to 1.1 mb, saves a lot of memory. I compared the difference and I cannot see any difference between the 1.1 mb picture and the 6.5 mb picture, and I am viewing them full size.

I normally keep this camera at 3:2 and Normal, again I don't see Fine as being any improvement over Normal. 3:2 is wider than normal to look better on tv's but still can be printed on a 4x6. The 16:9 seems too wide and then when you go to print them, stores like Walgreens may have a problem cropping part of the picture out of it.

I have always had Fujifilms, but Casio just seems to come out with things first and I just couldn't wait for Fujifilm to come out with a comparable camera. I am glad I made the move to Casio and I think I will stick with Casio for all my future cameras.

There is no camera this small with all these features and that takes such awesome pictures.

Mobi MobiCam Audio Video Wireless Internet Kit

I bought this camera mainly because it had the internet feature so I could share my toddler's room with my out-of-town family.

The Bad:

1. The internet connection feels like a rip off. You only get TWO hours of monitoring per MONTH unless you want to pay $9.95/month! If I buy an internet hookup, I expect to be able to watch my monitor any time or have my family be able to watch any time as well.

2. The internet connection is awkward. You have to hook up the physical monitor to a computer constantly with a bunch of wires & adapters (see below). So, at night (when I actually use the monitor), I have a choice of having the monitor hooked up to my computer OR being able to watch the monitor next to my bed. Who wants a computer running next to their bed all the time with a tangled mess of wires? See below.

3. Hookup consists of a USB to your computer, going to some adapter unit which goes to stereo & video RCA jacks as well as an S-video, which then goes to an 1/8" jack which finally hooks into the monitor. This is not just a USB cable like it says! This is ridiculously awkward.

4. Software is cheap! You have to install drivers, reboot, hook up the camera, install the software, etc., etc. It took a couple of hours to get this up & running, which is pretty bad in a plug & play world!

5. Your monitor hooks up to your computer which broadcasts your monitor to their website. Granted, they make you set up a website & password to make you feel secure about it, but you cannot control anything other than if you have the camera hooked up or not (& of course who you give the website & password to).

Overall, I am sorely disappointed that I got the internet hookup. I wish I had gotten the extra camera instead for the same price.

This kit includes drivers, webcam software, and pass-through cable to connect the MobiCam monitor to your PC via USB.

An additional monthly subscription fee is required if you actually want to view your MobiCam remotely via the Web. They allow up to 2 hours viewing time per month, but with grandparents that live 7 hours away, 2 hours won't get them through a month. So, if you decide to get this, then pay the $ and allow grandparents to experience the child's life while they still can.

I began to worry when I noticed one of the requirements, as listed on their box, is a "steaming" internet connection. This shows a lack of attention to detail and poor quality assurance; I would have immediately put this thing back on the shelf and walked away after reading a typo like that on product packaging. How good could it really be if this is how they're marketing themselves? But, this was given to us as a gift; so, I tried it out. My fears worsened after I began to read the included manual my 9-week old son could produce a better technical document than what they put out...I was embarrassed for them.

I installed the software on my desktop, and was able to get it working after some trials & tribulations with my firewall. However, the web cam software (mpeg4decoder.exe) crashes consistently, taking Windows Explorer down with it. I decided to try the software on my laptop to see if it worked any better on a different computer. Upon installation, Avira AntiVir identified the webcam software as a backdoor server (BDS/Hupigon.Gen).

Also, the software can only be installed on one computer. We would like to use it on our desktop on occasion, so I can use my laptop to access the internet and view my son when I'm away on business. We would also like to use it on the laptop downstairs, when my wife & I are both at home and viewing the MobiCam monitor downstairs, while baby sleeps upstairs.

In summary: buggy software needs to be fixed; questionable virus/backdoor distributed with their software; software should be allowed on multiple computers (e.g. iTunes); fix horrible writing & typos in your documentation and on your product packaging show us you care about your product.

I just tried to install the Internet Kit and the installer prompts to download files from the Mobi web site. When that was done, I ran the executable to install the files and found it to be infected with a virus from my scanner. Tried it again on a test pc with another virus scanner just to be sure it wasn't a false positive and sure enough, it is infected.

I bought this thinking we could see the kids if we were out and left them with a babysitter. What I found out was in order to do this the monitor must be connected to the pc. We only have one laptop! We don't have internet on our phones. There is also a $10 month charge. Had I known exactly how it worked and there was a monthly charge, I would not have bought it.

Aiptek Portable 3D Photo and Video Display (Black)

I recently purchase a Fujifilm W3 camera and wanted a large, portable viewing device for showing off my 3d photos. The display on the W3 is incredible, and I assumed this photo frame would be similar. Not so.

There are a few things that make the device unpleasant from the very start:

First of all, the resolution is pretty low. You will notice right away that the images are quite pixelated.

It only supports a specific format for 3d images. It is not difficult to use a freeware conversion tool to convert from the Fujifilm camera format to the side-by-side image format required, but it is inconvenient. This would not be a concern if you were moving images from another Aiptek device.

Neither of these issues were what turned me away from the device, however. For the relatively low cost I could have tolerated the low resolution, and although its a pain I could have gone through the process of converting all of my favorite images to work with this device. The real show stopper is that the 3d effect on this display is purely awful. This kind of display requires proper position to be effective, but on this particular device there is no so-called sweet spot. No matter how you position the display, you'll never get the entire image to look clear. The further away objects are in the picture, the blurrier they get. I'd be embarrassed to show anyone images off of this device, thus I returned it.

It may be that photos/videos taken with Aiptek devices look great, but those taken on the Fujifilm W3 certainly do not.

I am in the 3D Autostereoscopic (3D without the glasses (3disnow.com)) business.

I have glasses free monitors from 7" to 42", and let me note, this is not new technology.

I have a Sharp RD3D that must be over 6 years old. Barrier technology goes back to Frederic Ives, (1902), "A novel stereogram". Journal of the Franklin Institute.

What makes this different is it's portability. I does not need a computer to run it.

Now here is my review;

The battery life could be better.

It runs well from the output brought over from the Aiptek Camera.

I have also generated output from the Fuji 3D W3 camera as well as computer generated side-by-side output.

The Fuji output needs to be converted to side by side using Stereo PhotoMaker or Stereo Movie Maker.

After conversion to avi or jpeg files, I also resize and rescale for use in the Aiptek frame.

There has been 1 glitch with the jpeg files as the Frame does not recognize all the files.

I have been in touch with Aiptek support on this issue and have sent them samples to review.

As far as the visual quality, it is not bad Depending on the shot.

The price and portability are what make this very interesting.

I purchased this to play videos recorded with my Fuji W3 camera. This display works but needs improvement. The screen on the W3 looks much better.

The Aiptek frame and camera use side by side 3D format which cuts the quality of the image in half. When displayed on this frame, Each eye gets 600x400? lines of resolution. That's low for a 8" screen. My HD video looks a bit blurry and dull but not horrible.

For best 3D effect the screen must be close to your face and centered. Looking from an off angle may produce a blurry or double image. Limited viewing distance and angles make this display a poor choice to use as a photo frame for public display. Placing the frame at eye level would be ideal.

I have my Fuji W3 Videos playing on the Frame, It seems to be prone to crashing and freezing while playing videos.

I converted the video with Fuji Software to Side by Side (for 3d TV) and Ran it through the mp4 encoder software (Media Converter 2.5) that came with the frame. High Quality 720P footage crashes the frame very frequenly. Low Quality 720P mp4 plays but randomly crashes. Longest I have had it running without crashing/freezing is about 12 hours. The Frame cant handle much 3D effect, too much effect and it shows double image.

I hope they can fix the crashing. I have not yet tried another SD card or called support.

I've had my Aiptek frame for a couple of days now. This is one of those rare products that deserve both the 5 star and 1 star reviews it's getting.

I bought it because I have 25+ years of personal 3D photos (Realist, Nimslo and ViewMaster formats). I figured this might be a good way to get them out of the box and onto my mantle.

I initially tried to create the compatible stereo format from scans using Paint.Net. This proved to be too hard to align by eye. So I found Stereo Master and became a bit more successful. The biggest issue with older stereo formats is that they have portrait orientation the Aiptek wants landscape orientation. This means my successful photo attempts looked great in 3d but were stretched a lot. I need to sort this out before I consider the Aiptek acceptable for my intended use.

There are a lot of comments in other Amazon reviews about how viewable the photo frame is in 3d mode. Many reviewers comment on how there are limited viewing positions that work for the frame. This is absolutely true. It doesn't work well at a distance. You have to be right in front of it and at a specific distance (which is something like 2 to 3 feet away). This means it's not a replacement for a photo frame that sits on a mantle. It is probably meant to sit on a desk or be passed around.

The picture quality is iffy. I'll be happy if I can make it work for me as it is. But it really needs a bit more resolution.

The firmware is very minimalistic. It has just enough features to be barely functional.

It's a terrible product when you compare it to a traditional photo frame (I'd give it one star if this was the comparison). It's reasonable if you consider it a novelty 3D product (I'd say it's a 4 star product in this category). Since I had hoped to use it as a mantle 3D photo frame my rating is 2 stars. However, I'm very likely going to keep it.

Yes, it does exist, and it works very well. I am very pleased with this; it is simple to use and the 3-D effect on both stills and video I've shot with the Aiptek camera is great. If this is a hint of what is coming in the autostereoscopic department, then maybe there really is hope for glasses free 3-D TVs someday. Sure, you have to be directly in front of the screen for it to work, but it's not a big deal really. It's far more impressive than the smaller screen on the camera.

The two free batteries are Power2000 brand, which for all I know are made in the same factory as genuine Canon, and were freebies so how can I complain.

The grip is genuine Canon, and works well, though it's very thick compared to the 5D3's normal grip and better for large hands I'd think. The design could have been just as thin as the Camera's given the battery width...perhaps this oversized grip was judged better for large lenses.

The cleaning kit is cheapo but handy.

THE BATTERY GRIP PERFORMS GREAT! HOWEVER THE SUPPLIED POWER2000 BATTERIES ARE JUNK. ONE DOES NOT WORK AT ALL AFTER 2 TIMES OF CHARGING. THE OTHER LAST 50% THE LIFE OF CANONS LP-E6 BATTERIES.
