Kodak Easyshare V1233 12.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Black)

I purchased this several months ago and used it quite a bit (gently) until it broke after about a month or two of use (sensor had trouble with light processing and final photos were bad). Although I found that I had to dig in order to find Kodak's customer service number, once I spoke to someone they were helpful. I did have to pay my own shipping to get it sent in for repairs, but that whole process went extremely quickly. I would give them high markes for fixing what was broken and my three star rating does not reflect any bad feeling about the fact the camera stopped working correctly so soon after purchase.

The camera itself was OK, but not outstanding. I found 12mp looked exactly the same as several of the lower mp choices and about the same as my older 5mp fuji. At least for what I do with a camera the 12mp didn't equate to anything. The HD video mode, which was the main reason I picked up the camera, was only so so. Outdoors it was fine, but did not handle bright whites well at all and displayed a purple streak from white objects. Indoors the video was very noisy. (In fairness though, even mid range consumer camcorders in the $400-$1000 range display noise indoors if you are not using a dedicated light.)

Pros: small size, good LCD screen, HD video is better then the 640x480 that most cameras shoot but don't expect anything approaching broadcast quality.

Cons: proprietary battery that I couldn't get off ebay yet, digital image stabilization not the equivalent of mechanical, only a 3x optical zoom, pics just average.

I have to start by letting you know im not a professional photographer, im just a person who wants to take good pictures, and decent video, with one small device that you can carry in your pocket.

And that's exactly what makes this camera worth the money, what other camera will give 12mp images, and 16:9 video at 720p, for $180?

Yes when you take a picture, it takes a few seconds (3-4) for the image to be processed before you can take another one, so know this, if you want to picture a moving object you better use the burst mode, cause you only get 1 shot.

Video is great, and you can actually take stills out of the video, resolution is awesome (720p for a point & shoot!).

Other manufactures will offer you great pictures, but horrible video quality, and if you buy a video camera you get great video but 1mp or vga pictures, this bad boy gives you the best of both worlds, on a small handy camera, at half the price.

This camera is definitely a lot of bang for your buck

It was sleek and lovely. The only thing I continue to wonder is why the manufacturers didnt add an AC charger just like in the 10MP. This is funny! I had to charge on my computer. I was lucky I had a G600 printer which I also used to charge. I finally had to order the charger saperately which am using to charge it now. The charger was lovely, as it can be dismantled and fixed again.

For videos you want to review on the camera, the camera volume may disappoint you, as it is no loud enough. The image quality is however fantastic. Pictures I taken with this camera have not been a bad idea at all, and the camera's shutter speed is impressive, incomparable to any other Kodak camera I have ever used or come across. The only visible problem you have to cope with is the rate at which pictures blurr. You have to keep your hand real steady to get a clear pic.

If you are the type that likes sleek things, this one is definitely for you.I would recommend it for upgrading by Kodak. I also suggest that they retain the shape and improve on my complaints. But, judging from the price, this camera is not a bad idea at all!

This is actually the second time I have bought this camera. I ruined my first one on my trip in Hawaii when it was in my swim trunk pocket and it got wet when helping a man dock his boat. I loved it so much that I bought another here on Amazon which had a better pirice then the first one I bought. It's the best camera and the 12 mega pixels are incredible along with the HD video. Leica Digilux 4.3 2.4MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom

This is a great digital camera. It has a nice display screen (which is important since the view finder is very small and hard to use) but the camera is designed nicely to be held in the palm using the display screen. They supply a 32 meg smart media card and rechargable batteries/charger. Which is needed because they run out fast using display window. (I bought an extra 4 to keep in the carrying case) The picture quality is excellent and the added 80 second movie is a neat option. If you were considereing the Canon elph s100, take a second look at the Leica as it offers slightly larger size but double the picture quality for less than [price] and as always it has the phenomenal Leica lens. Enjoy!

I asked for this camera for christmas a got it(horay)! The main reason was that I thought it had the highest resolution 4.3 megapix. In fact it does not and Fuji who made it have had to change their advertising which has been called misleading. It is like a 2.3 megapixal but used some funny formula to produce data files that have 4.3 megapizals, but the original picture does not. HOWEVER it takes really great pictures and can do movies for up to 80 seconds (with included 32mb sancard) There are a wide range of settings full automatic, manual, movie, night time, 'rapid fire' that takes 3 pictures one after another. The controls are easy to learn and can be manipulated with one hand. It is relatively small and fits in a pocket. I was pleased to find a macro attatchment for it (you also have to by a small base stand to attatch this to the camera). this allows you to take extreme close ups mainly of skin which is good for me as a Dermatologist! Although it does have difficulty with colors at extreme close ups, it has no problem that I can see without the macro. The pictures is produces are really great. I also have an Epsonn 875 color printer, when combind with good photographic paper to print on they really do look like amazing pictures. Now I have not used digital cameras before so I can not really compare it, but I have seen other frineds camera and I really like my one. It is not as small as those Cannon Elfs. It only uses rechargeable batteries. Make sure you buy it online it is at least... more expensive in most stores. Enjoy. Oh yea, it comes with easy to use software.

Regardless of what the numbers say, this camera is a (roughly) 2.1 megapixel system that uses a process similar to television "line doubling" to effect its claimed 4.3 megapixel resolution. While that is true, it also true that the pictures it takes are plenty sharp without "doctoring" and will easily enlarge to 5" x 7" without becoming grainy. This is in no small part a result of excellent optics. In addition, the true (optical) 3X zoom is excellent, and its ability to shoot rather long movies (80 secs with sound) is a nice plus. Having said all that in its favor, it is still (IMHO) *way* overpriced, mostly because it has the Leica name on it. You can buy the same camera with the Fuji name on it (model 4700) and save hundreds!

Foscam FI8910W White Wireless IP Cameras 2-pack

I bought a single FI8910W to test it out and then followed up with this bundle. I tried everything from TrendNet to Panasonic and other, less known brands. Panasonics are great, but way too expensive. Foscam does everything I need it to do for a fraction of the price. I am also planning on getting their exterior cameras as well. Easy to set up and use, they come with mounting hardware. I use all my cameras in the house (4) via a wireless connection and never an issue in speed or reliabily. One issue that I am noticing is that once in a while the camera will reset itself and I find it pointing up in he ceiling. Fortunately their iPod/iPad/iPhone software is great and I can point the camera where I need from anywhere in the world. Don't get me wrong, these are not the best cameras on he market and I am hesitant to give any product 5 stars, but for the price, you simply cannot do any better.

The video quality is really good. I've showed it to a couple people who have immediately purchased it after seeing the quality and features at such a low price.

The iPhone app is also great and takes advantage of all the features of the cameras (was more than worth the additional 5.99)

Just keep in mind that 'wireless' means you don't have to have network cables attached to it, and not that you don't have to still plug them into a wall socket for power.

Networked to my wireless router, the remote tilt/pan camera allows me to keep in touch with my "kids" (two Shih Tzus) that must remain locked in my kitchen while I am at work. It's great to be able to actually "talk" to them via the built-in speaker/mic via my iPhone. Picture quality is excellent on the iPhone. Not so great on a big screen, but what do you want for a 100 bucks!

I was a little hesitant at first to purchase "budget" wireless IP cameras, as I've heard/read many horror stories, and noticed there are some people on Amazon remarking that many of the positive Foscam reviews are bogus. But I decided to take a chance on these, after reading a favorable tech review.

So far, I've found that the cameras are easy to setup, and work pretty much as advertised. My home network setup consists of a DSL gateway modem, a Linksys main router, and 2 Linksys bridge-repeaters (created from older wireless routers), all flashed with DD-WRT.

There is a small trick or two that you need to keep in mind during setup, and knowing this can make the process much less frustrating. Here are some tips, less all the excruciating detail, which you might find useful:

1. Plug the camera into your ROUTER using an ethernet patch cable do NOT plug it into your desktop or laptop computer.

2. Install the IP Camera tool from the included disk or download it from the Foscam site () FIRST! There are versions for Windows and Mac.

3. Start the IP Camera tool, give it a few moments, and it should find the camera. Click the link in the popup window, and your admin screen to the camera interface should load in a browser.

4. From here you can setup the features of your camera. I found that one easy way is to use the UPnP (universal plug and play). This worked very well for me. Using UPnP, should aid in identifying your camera to your router.

5. I don't see any reason why you should NOT set a static *internal* IP address, and I think the DHCP option is kind of ridiculous. Having a static internal IP will allow you to ALWAYS find your Foscams when connected to your home network make a bookmark. With DHCP, these internal IP numbers can change.

6. If you are installing the two camera (or more) set, decide on unique PORT NUMBERS for each camera. You will be connecting remotely to your home network through a single IP address (a public, external one), so having a port number for each will make it easier to connect to the right camera and for forwarding.

7. Port forwarding I think a lot of people get confused on this step, but it is essential if you want to operate and view the cameras from outside your home or business. On my setup, I did forwarding for the relevant camera ports I selected on my DSL gateway, and main router. Doing the same on repeaters will probably be a good idea as well, if you have them.

8. Once you *think* you have the ports forwarded correctly, use an online tool like "canyouseeme" () to verify. Basically, navigate to the site with your web browser while on your home or business network, and it will pre-populate the IP address field of your home network (the external public one) in the correct field. Enter each port number and hit the test button. This will tell you if the port is truly open.

9. When you test your camera for internal network viewing (using the internal IP address you setup in the beginning), remember to concatenate the port numbers for each camera. So if your camera's internal IPs are something like 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.3, with port numbers of 8090 and 8091 respectively, you would enter: 192.168.0.2:8090 and 192.168.0.3:8091 in your browser URL bar.

10. For testing REMOTE camera operation, don't try to do it inside your home network, as it will probably hang on you, since you are coming FROM the same IP address your are trying to connect TO. Use a connection outside your home using the external IP address (determined from canyouseeme or other), with the port numbers concatenated onto the end for each respective camera. OR, if you have something like a VPN, connect to that, so the address you are coming FROM is different than your actual home IP address.

PROS:

Good picture, reliable panning motion, decent reception and range, IR for night vision, presets (excellent), included mounting arm/bracket, and price.

CONS:

No zoom or built in record functionality in the included software.

Overall, I think this is a really nice setup for the price, and should tick the boxes for the average person.

Update #1: I've been using two of these for about 3 months now, and they still haven't disappointed me. I purchased the Blue Iris software package from Foscam LCC here on Amazon, and that is by far the best solution for multi-camera real-time monitoring, as well as recording. Mine are setup to record short clips based on motion, and they have been working pretty much flawlessly. We decided to expand our security and I was happy enough to order a second set of two.

Zacuto Z-Find-Pro3 Optical Viewfinder

Pros: Great Viewfinder. Well made, the anti-fog coating covers are wonderful. It is simply great, fits perfectly on my T2I. I suggest buying the "Z-Finder Mounting Frame" if you have the Canon T2I so you don't have to unscrew the mounting plate every time you have to change the battery. Plus if you have only one viewfinder and a spare camera, you can swap between the two.

Cons:It is very expensive...there are much cheaper ones, but I am unsure of the cheaper one's quality.

Final Thoughts: I took off one star for the price, but in my opinion, when filming video on these DSLRs or any video for that matter, one of the most important things is seeing what you are recording. Focus is SO important. So I decided to not skimp out with this one item, and I am very happy I did not skimp out. Dont get me wrong, you may be able to get similar results out of another viewfinder, but I have not found any that are 3x and that have anti-fog and a diopter. Plus most others use magnetic strips which...I don't like the idea of magnets near my electronics.

This product review is more about application and less about the product itself. This viewfinder is great, the gorilla mount is super heavy duty, the viewfinder is rugged and solid, and most importantly it works really well and does not fog up. Even the fact that it snaps onto the plastic clips, which originally seemed like a flaw and something that would wear down and eventually stop working, have held up pretty well for me.

The issue is, I use it less and less. I have a Canon 7D and a Canon 60 D at my disposal, obviously this presents a problem with the 60 D because it'll eliminates the FlipOut LCD screen. On the 7D, it's fine but I find I'm constantly popping it off and on because otherwise it limits your shots. We do a lot of run and gun shooting for weddings and corporate events and I found that this viewfinder sits in my bag more than it sits on the camera. That being said its great for shooting a speech or conference because you don't always have the luxury of getting a critical focus at the beginning of a speech and nothing is worse than being out of focus for a full speech (in 12 minute increments of course...damn limited recording time!)

Bottom line, it's something good to have, but if you're starting out building your kit and you keep reading all these reviews that you can't trust the LCD screen on your camera that's not true either. If your on a limited budget and it's between this and something else you might need like a mic or a lens, get that first.

If someone reads this and thinks I'm full of it and has a better workflow for running and gunning I'm all ears by the way :)

Purchased this for my new Nikon D7000 which I acquired primarily for video shooting

As a long time Pro Photographer I wasn't used to shooting with the LCD screen on my dslrs...manual focus was proving problematic at best while shooting video so I decided to add a loupe to assist until I can justify getting a SmallHD D6 video monitor (check it out...it's the ultimate hddslr wish list item ;-).

First tried the Hoodman combo and returned it after one day...the rubber they use attracts dirt, fingerprints and dust like a magnet so it looked beat up after a few hours attempted use. I say attempted because it moved around a bit when used as a third brace point and wasn't the most comfortable against my eye...the $16 rubber band is a joke and kept blocking the lens opening during changes.

This was what I should have ordered from the start...pro build quality, excellent optics and feels solid and comfortable against my eye with or without glasses. The slight offset it's mount causes when adding a quick release plate actually worked well for me with my Shape Composite Stabilizer shoulder rig adding just a touch more offset of the camera on the rig and placing it directly in front of my eye...set up was quick and easy as I didn't need any of the extender frames and things just popped into focus bright crisp and clear.

I took 1 point off because for this price you'd think they'd include a bag to store it in and protect it from camera bag dust as even the less expensive ones do...

I justify the price paid by thinking about it like I do my lenses...Always buy the best optics you can...the glass you use will be around through many camera bodies...

Purchased the 3x version over the 2.5x version based on a gut feeling, thinking more would be better... Well, upon first use I thought I may have made the wrong choice. The view is so much bigger that initially I wasn't comfortable with it. But after a few weeks of use I really appreciate having it. (If you are lucky enough to compare the 2 versions, I recommend you do before you buy)

My Nikon D7000 has the battery attachment. So, I also order the Zacuto extended mounting plate for cameras with battery grips. It all fits around the LCD perfectly. However, it does make it a little harder to use the selection pad around the OK button since the frame is robust and cramps the space normally between the LCD and the selection pad.

Some minor issues after a few weeks of usage:

* Try not to get the anti-fog shield dirty it's sticky. They do warn you in the instructions. But, if you're like me and don't read them, then you'll find out the hard way the first time you try to clean it. READ THE INSTRUCTION on how to clean it properly.

* The lanyard is oversized in every way a giant billboard that is unnecessary. I would've preferred a simple tether to keep the loupe secured when not attached. There's been a few times that it has actually gotten in the way and caused me to yank the view off the camera... I've since replace it with a much shorter and detachable strap/tether.

* The plastic eye cover is attached with a simple cord, however the cord was cut and melted as a way to keep the cover attached. Unfortunately, this made a little ball of plastic at the end of the string on the inside of the cap which gets in the way of letting the cap sit flush within the eye piece. So the cap keeps coming off and won't stay on while I'm handling the camera.

* I have a sinking feeling that with a lot of usage, taking the loupe off and on the bracket a lot... I think after a lifetime of use, either the frame attachment point(s) or the inside attachment point(s) of the finder may wear down and not bind strong enough to keep the finder attached. Right now it's solid...

* The spacers are tough to separate! Make sure you actually need them before snapping them together and trying them out. I had a tough time separating the 3 provided I didn't want to use any tools that might have damaged them. So I had to work them apart by hand...

* As attached to a Nikon D7000 with a battery grip, the extended frame does fit, but it is not flush at the bottom of the Gorilla plate. There's about 2mm of the frame left at the bottom stick out past the plate. You'll have to consider this if you then plan on attaching a tripod head plate you'll need to position it to accommodate the extended mounting frame. (Maybe if you file it down to be flush with the bottom of the plate, then it won't be a concern...)

* No carrying case or pouch although it may not get used as much it would've been nice to have one included.

Conclusion:

So far this is a worthwhile purchase. When filming in bright daylight this is a must have for the LCD. The build quality is excellent. The 3x version does take some getting used to and does show a little pixilation with that level of magnification, but on the Nikon D7000 it is working great! With the magnification you'll also see just how bad your handheld technique is!

I only give it 4-stars because of its price and the number issue I described... for the money I guess I expected a more flawless experience.

Sanyo Xacti HD1010 4MP MPEG4 High Definition 1080i/1080p Camcorder with 10x Optical Zoom

For the last few weeks I have been searching for as many reviews as I could on the Sanyo HD 1010 to help me make a decision on which camcorder to purchase. Because I could only base my decision on the 4 reviews that I read here (which did help immensely), I thought I'd share my opinion of this camcorder to help other potential consumers make up their mind.

I should tell you that I am a professional wedding photographer (still images, 14 years) so that you have a reference point of who's telling you what. I received the Sanyo HD 1010 3 days ago, and had the entire weekend to play around with it.

The quick answer: For my purposes, I love this camcorder. However, this camcorder is not for everyone-you should determine what you plan on using the camera for before deciding to purchase (see below, two paragraphs down).

My wife and I love to travel. I was looking for a camcorder that tooks great video, was portable and took decent still images. The 1010 does just that. I've looked at the Canon HF 100 and the Samsung HMX20C and they are also small, but the 1010 just feels smaller to me and more portable. I own a Sony PC9 which was a great camcorder in its day, but it has stayed at home the last five years. (I like to have a camera that I can put on my belt clip or is light enough to dangle from my neck.) The video's that I've used have come from point and shoot cameras that took decent video clips. The image quality (from the point and shoot cameras) is certainly not as good as mini DV, which the PC9 is, but it was always there for the taking. I only recently became interested in shooting better quality video as the size of these new camcorders have come down recently. Understand that I am not replacing my still camera (the Canon G7 is my travel camera) and don't recommend anyone to replace their still camera with this all in one camcorder. However, the 1010 does take nice stills (a little oversaturated, but quite acceptable). You obviously can only use one camera at a time, so when you are using the 1010 and want to snap a quick photo while you're shooting video or you stop shooting video, it's nice to know you can get a decent photo with this camcorder.

The reason this camcorder is not for everyone is the poor image stabilization. If the 1010 had optical image stabilization, it would be hands down perfect! Does this ruin it for me? NO. Most people have a tendency to overuse the zoom lens and pan too quickly. Most of my videos are taken at wide or mid range (travel, scenic footage and family gatherings). When I do pan, I hold the camcorder as steady as possible and SLOWLY pan, almost exaggerated. I do this whether or not the camcorder has image stabilization. You shouldn't rely on the image stabilization as a crutch. If you use good techniques for average subjects your videos will be fine. I shot 12 minutes of a family birthday party using the techniques I described and my videos were fine, no "motion sickness videos". However, if plan on buying the 1010 to videotape your young children or children's sports, I don't recommend this camera. That's where a good optical image stabilizer will shine.

Ok, my observations:

* As I said, I love this product. It produces beautiful videos, better than any camcorder I've ever owned. I tried all the different quality settings and decided to stick with the 1080i 60fps as my permanent setting. On this setting, I didn't see any artifacts, or lagging, when panning with image stabilization (IS) off. I really need to do some more comparisons with IS on, but this is my initial impression. I looked at my brother in law's HI Def Sony with him. He's a computer/techie expert and we looked together and both agreed on the same things. The 60fps settings on both the 1080i and 720i were better than the 1080p 30fps and 720p 30fps settings. I know everyone makes a big deal about the 1080p setting, but 60fps LOOKS better. It's smoother. The 1080i and 720i at 60fps are very close in quality on the High Def set, but on my 36 inch Sony, the 720i when panned had some artifacts (don't know why; didn't happen on the Hi-def set. I'm sure you techies know). But the reason I'm going to leave it on the highest quality is two reasons: 1.) You should always record at the best setting. You can always down convert, but you can't upconvert. 2. ) With the software(Nero 8) that comes packaged with the product, I am able to burn a standard DVD taken from 1080i 60fps footage. As others have said, I cannot view the footage at normal speed (views jerky) on my PC(windows XP, laptop, dual core), but I can still burn it un-edited to a DVD which plays beautifully. I don't have time anyway to edit videos on a PC. What I CAN do, is splice the mpeg 4 clips together in the camera (very easy to do!) and/or edit them in camera, and then burn to the DVD. It's not Hi-def quality, but it's DVD quality and still better than any other home video that I have ever produced. I plan on getting a separate USB drive to keep my "albums" in Hi-def and play them back on Hi-def TV, and use the DVD's as a lower quality (but still good) back up and/or to share with family/friends. FYI, the 12 minutes of footage took roughly 50 minutes to burn. Not bad! I haven't researched recording on to a Blu-Ray in Hi-def, but even if it's not till next year, the hi-def footage will be there when I'm ready to.

* I love the size. Not really pocketable as some people claim (a jacket yes, pants, no), but small enough to put on your hip or dangle from your neck (I use a Canon neckstrap made for their Elph camera's).

* You can "pull" high quality jpegs from your video footage. I was really amazed at how good the images are when you do this! Very clean and smooth.

* The holster case from Sanyo is so-so. It's ok for a house party or short term use, but the clip is not tight on the belt and there is nothing to prevent the camera from falling out if you snag the case on something or have excessive movement. I bought a UV filter to protect the lens and the lens cap does not fit very snug on the filter. The filter falls off EVERY time I put the camera in the holster. I will look around for an aftermarket case to use instead. I would not use the holster outside of the house.

* The controls/menus, etc, are GREAT. I have never had a camera that navigates so easily and quickly when looking to change settings. This is a big plus and not to be overlooked.

* I use a Transcend 8gb class 6 card and it works fine. Did not seem to take a long time to write the file to the card, but my longest clip was only 3 minutes. Maybe if I shot longer footage, a faster card would make a difference.

* Low light footage is FINE. People have complained about the grain in the low light footage. I don't have an issue with this. In very, very low light you are going to get grain. Of course! Here's my experience. I took my family footage at night at a well lit house (lighting from the ceiling, high-caps) and there was no grain. When we went to the dining room for the birthday cake singing, the lights went off, and a single candle lit the room. I had the camera ISO set to AUTO, which appears to me to set the lowest ISO that will take an acceptable video. That's the way it should be. Anyway, when the lights went off, the video went black for a split second until the ISO adjusted to the candle, and the video had some grain but was fine. It's not a professional camera. This low light problem that reviewers are complaining about is a non-issue. When the lights went back on, everything shifted back to normal.

* I had no problem with focus hunting. There was very little of it and it was not noticeable. There was one time when the camcorder shifted completely out of focus but only for a split second. It seemed no different from any other camcorder that I've owned.

* I'm thinking of getting the wide angle converter (for the travel usage), but don't really have an issue with the widest angle of view. Yes, I would have loved a 28mm equivalent, but the 38mm is fine.

* Battery life seems fine, not an issue. Again, haven't used it too much, but I did get two equivalent batteries on Amazon for twenty bucks.

* I find the pistol grip to be quite comfortable and easier to hold than the more common "palmcorders". Also, I use two hands to hold the camera and keep it steady. I keep my left hand on the LCD screen. This helps steady the camera and keep down the jerkiness when zooming in tight and also panning.

* The flash is pretty good. I was very surprised. However, I found that when I used the flash, it seem to oversaturate the image vs. when I turned the flash off and used natural light.

Conclusion: Great camcorder, great video results. Don't let the image stabilization issue stop you from buying this product unless your primary purpose is taking video of your young children and sports action.

This camcorder exceeded even my highest expectations. I have only had it a little over 24 hours but so far it has been incredible. the interface is very intuitive, the movie quality is, as far as I have seen, unsurpassed in a camcorder this size and price, and is everything its advertised to be (and then some).

grip I would like to have seen the grip area be a bit larger. I have found a way to make it ft nicely in my hand, but if the grip was either larger or came with, say, a plastic extender maybe that you could put on the bottom it would be great. I have put the camera in 6 different peoples hands and they all said it felt nice after holding it for a few minutes. You just have to find a way that it is comfy for your hand size.

screen rotation the one and only thing , if I were the designers of the HD1010 that I would change (and now you'll see how nitpicky I am being). If the viewing screen would rotate to the front I could hold the camera in front of me, look at the screen and know I'm in focus / in the shot, and make a quickie recording. Sort of a looking at the camera, blair witch kinda shot. It only rotates to the top and bottom, not to the front. just a wishlist thing. thats the absolute worst thing about the camera so far.

Comparing it to all of the complaints of the HD1000, I can say everything that was complained about in the HD1000 has been fixed. Sanyo even admitted that this is not supposed to be a whole new model, only a upgrade to the HD1000. By that I mean all of the autofocus issues I read about with the HD1000 have been resolved. as a matter of fact I couldnt MAKE it have a focusing problem. I've tried low light, bright light, moving subjects, even the fan in my living room. everything focused perfectly.

The camera takes great pictures also. They turned out better than any digital camera I have ever used, albeit I have always used more of the personal point and shoot olympus / nikon type. Dark rooms, outdoors, inside with fluorescent bulbs, you name it the pictures have been better than what I expected.

Like I said, I have had 6 other people try using it, from my girlfriend with really small hands to a guy I work with who is 6'7" and has Andre the giant hands and they have all loved it. I have not told anyone how to use it. Just handed it to them and said 'I just got a new camera, try it out and see what you think.' With no instructions everyone has taken both movies, pictures, and had smiles while doing it. Its rare to find something electronic that anyone can use with no instructions given and the HD1010 is something you can use straight out of the box. It really is fun to use.

bottom line, if you are looking at getting a camcorder, this one deserves a close look. I am very picky when it comes to electronics, and I am amazed at what they have done with this camcorder/camera. Everything I expected when I ordered it has been greatly exceeded. Great camera, ease of use, quality of the product overall, and in the end quality of the movies it makes... you cant go wrong.

Before HD camcorders became available I had a DV (tape based; standard definition) camcorder. The trouble with DV camcorders is that it is time-consuming to (1) import the movie into the computer and (2) encode it into a suitable format. Needless to say, because of the hassle I wasn't making very many home movies. Then I purchased an Xacti C4. This camera made a big difference. It was tiny, easily fit in the jeans pocket, the image quality was decent for an SD camera, and most importantly, no post-processing was needed! All you had to do was drag & drop files from the camera to the computer. No waiting for the tape to wind. No re-encoding needed either because the file format is already MP4. To watch the movie on TV all I had to do is drop the file into iTunes, then wirelessly stream the movie to AppleTV. It doesn't get any easier than this.

Then HD cameras became available. My first HD camera was Sony HDR-HC1. That's a pretty decent camera. But once again I wasn't making very many movies because HDR-HC1 is tape based, which means a time-consuming process is needed to transfer the movie and to encode to H.264 MP4 format. So I purchased an Xacti HD1010 hoping to repeat my success with the old Xacti C4 but in HD this time.

My first impression when I got the HD1010 was that it is larger and heavier than I expected. This is not a big camera by any means, but my expectations were set by the tiny Xacti C4, and compared to that camera the HD1010 seems big and heavy. It won't fit in my jeans pocket either (unlike the Sony HDR-TG1, the smallest HD camcorder available today.)

What about image quality? I shot a test footage in low light. I was not impressed with the image quality. Fine details seemed to be missing apparently due to heavy noise-reduction. I then decided to compare the HD1010 with my old Sony HDR-HC1. I held the Sony in one hand and the Sanyo in the other and simultaneously shot test footages using both cameras, in a semi-lowlight situation. Initially the Sony appeared to have much better image quality. But that was the raw uncompressed footage. I encoded the Sony footage into H.264 and adjusted the bitrate so that the resulting file is about the same size as the one from Sanyo. Now the Sony and Sanyo quality seemed comparable. In fact the Sanyo seemed to have more accurate color. But the big difference was in image stabilization. I didn't know how good Sony's image stabilization was until I compared it to the Sanyo. The Sanyo movie is very jittery. This is with Sanyo's image stabilization on, and with zoom set to 1x. For HD camcorders stabilization is important, and the HD1010 disappoints in this department.

Another disappointment was that although the MP4 files from the Sanyo are compatible with QuickTime they are not compatible with AppleTV. AppleTV expects 720p 24 fps (frames per second). Sanyo supports 720p but it uses 30 fps, not 24 fps. As a result the file has to be converted before being streamed to AppleTV. It is easy enough to convert using iTunes, but it takes a long time. The resulting file is 960x540 not 1280x720 because iTunes gives priority to preserving the fps and at 30 fps AppleTV only supports 960x540.

I like the fact that this camera comes with a soft case. For comparison Sony charges $50 extra for a soft case for their competing HDR-TG1.

Bottom line: I am a little disappointed because the camera is bigger and heavier than the Xacti C4, the files are not immediately compatible with AppleTV, and most importantly the image stabilization is poor, which means you have to use a tripod. For comparison the Canon HF10 has optical image stabilization and it has a 24 fps mode, both of which would have helped me. The Canon is more expensive but it has 16GB of internal memory which HD1010 doesn't.

I've had the HD1010 for 2 weeks now, I have fiddled with most of the features and used it mainly for filming my kids. I am a Mac user so I can't tell you about the windows software that comes bundled with it.

This is a very good little camera, its small enough to carry in your pocket (I wear cargo shorts a lot) and it has great start up and ready to shoot times (the time it takes you flip open the screen when in sleep mode, a few seconds more when complete off.

First the bad.

To date (Aug 7, 2008) 1920 x 1080 /60 fps does not work with any software I have on my mac (imovie 08, VLC player, Visualhub video converter). Nothing, it shows a green screen or a static partial video fields with audio. I think this is a codec issue that will work it self out in later releases of the software. I emailed Sanyo tech support 2 days ago and still no reply. I am not impressed with them at all.

First-Quality:

I think the picture quality of this camera is awesome. We have been using it for about 3 months now. The picture is clear enough where we can see by looking at the monitor if our daughter is breathing while she's sleeping. We can also see if her eyes are open, or if she spit up. The night vision is incredible, just as clear as with daylight. Before my daughter was born we used this camera as a security camera and it was perfect for that as well. We plan on purchasing one or two more to use as security cameras.

The biggest con of this camera, at least with ours, has been audio. We have never gotten clear audio from either our PC or our iPhones. We have an AngelCare Movement & Sound Monitor and we use that for audio to monitor our daughter.

Second-Configuration:

I did not find this camera nearly as hard to configure as it seems some others have. I found the instructions to be satisfactory. I would say I've had some experience with computers, but never with network configuration or installing anything like this.

The DNS service the instructions tell you to use is no longer free. You can find free sources, but it's not built into their software the way DynDNS is. So, I just paid the $20 for a year of service from DynDNS and followed the instructions and it worked.

I then paid $4.99 for the Foscam Surveillance Pro app on the iPhone. The app rocks. I can take screenshots or video, pan/tilt the camera, and there's a talk button as well so I can use the 2-way talk from my iPhone.

In total it cost me about $110 and about 20 minutes to get this camera working. The average video baby monitor costs between $150 $300 these days and are not viewable from your computer at work or on your smart phone. The downside to this would be that it will only work as long as your internet is working. Comcast screwed up royally over and over again when we moved and it took about 10 days for us to have internet, and therefore, no monitor during that time.

Overall, if you're not computer illiterate, and you don't mind paying the $20 a year for DynDNS's services (or taking the time to figure out how to use a free service similar to it), I would recommend this camera for you.

If you only plan on using this camera locally via WiFi (no web access) then you don't even need to worry about DynDNS or similar service. My husband and I will be buying more of these low-priced, high-quality cameras!

UPDATE: It's now October 31st (happy halloween) and we've been using this camera for several months now. With our set-up I still have no complaints. In fact, the reason I'm back here is because we're ordering another one to put in another room in our house.

It may be complicated to set-up in the beginning, but once it's ready, you're rewarded with clear picture, amazing night vision and the convenience of using this on my smart phone.

I did bump it down from 5 stars to 4 stars because the audio feature is not really usable, although we've used it before if our other monitor is not within reach. There's a lag and lots of static. Still, I plan on ordering at least 2 more!

I had an old DLink IP cam from years ago. I gave that away so I was looking for a new one. Nothing really stood out on the Amazon site for wireless IP cameras well, there were, but they were out of my price range. For me, I just needed to test the waters as far as wireless IP cameras were and the price swayed me to get this one. The camera is pretty good in the dark, it works pretty well till about maybe 10 feet after that, it's like looking into a black hole. The color during daylight is off, but otherwise, images look good. Well worth it.

This camera is great as a baby camera or indoor security camera. It has a lot features including wifi/wired access via http, ftp, msn, etc. The night vision is very clear. The documentation was sometimes hard to decipher. Be sure to update the firmware!

The reviews for this camera were great, overall, so I bought one to use as a baby monitor. I consider myself in the middle when it comes to technical savvy. This camera is not for the faint of heart of those that get confused by DHCP, IP, ActiveX downloads, death loops of error messages and so on.

I was thrilled to find that the instructions were all contained on a 4x4, 20 page booklet....not a whole lot to do. I like to have electronic copies of manuals so I hit their website and found that the actual installation and manual is 48 pages of dense text on letter sized paper...that was my first tip off that the install wasn't going to be easy.

I tried the install on two different Windows 7 machines; one of which was brand new and, therefore, as pristine as a machine could get. The software installed just fine in about 10 seconds each time. I rebooted as prompted. I launched the IP Camera app, saw my camera listed as Annymous with the IP address, double clicked it (horrificly amateur user interface on that app by the way) and was taken to what looked like a control panel of sorts.

There were virtual dials and knobs and controls to move the camera around. Where one would normally see the image from the camera, I had a nice large black box with a smaller white box in the upper left hand corner which contained a red X...basically I needed to download and install an Active X control. I was prompted to do this on both machines, I selected Install, gave the install app permission to install, and got some weird message saying that Windows had found a problem with the file. My only option was OK so I clicked it and I was once again asked if I wanted to install. Death loop. The only way to end it was to hit No several times.

This sounded like a Windows problem so I tried it on the other PC with the exact same results. At that point, I was convinced that it was an install program issue, was indicative of how the product would function, and put the whole thing back in the box.

Even the instructions are ambiguous. Here are a few samples:

"If you use Windows7 and could not find the icon on desktop after installing the IP camera tool, please check if the path of the camera software is correct. For example, if it was pointing to C:\Windows\System32\IPCamera.exe.

Then fix this by pointing the shortcut to the correct path C:\Windows\SysWOW64\IPCamera.exe. The shortcut should work without any problems." What? Why not update your install program?

"Please don't upgrade the firmware freely. Sometimes, your camera may be damaged if configured wrong during the upgrade. If your camera works well with the current firmware, we recommend not upgrading." What is the purpose of a firmware update then? Do they magically know to only include fixes that are causing every malfunction?

"If you could not view living video after running the activeX. Only a red cross in the center of the video or just a black screen. Please change another port number to try. Don't use port 80.Use port 85, 8005 or 8100 to try." What is living video? Who taught this person grammar and sentence structure? Who let them write end-user technical reference material?

I am sure this is a good camera...for the married-to-your-computer type of person who thinks it is great to spend hours tweaking and configuring things knowing that you'll get to repeat it all in case of failure or new routers or whatever. Not for me...I value my time far too much to waste another minute trying to tweak and fix my network, or decipher the first grade writing in the manual.

I had to remove and reinsert the adapter about 5x before it finally recognized it. Overall, very pleased. Probably the best deal I've gotten this year. HDE shipped it very quickly as well as you can see from the info above. Just top form, and I couldn't be more pleased.

The adapter DOES support audio, but you have to change your speaker selection through System Preferences on a Mac. Build quality is good and it mimics the white finish found on many Apple products. Audio and video quality is perfect at 720p, though that's expected with HDMI.

I was a little apprehensive buying this product since its an unknown seller and it was being sold for so cheap. But, I decided to buy it as my MacBook Pro does not have an HDMI port and very often we need to stream DVD/Youtube video in my Mac to TV.

It works. I havent had any issue with it no installation issues, no parts issues. Its been working very fine. The only problem I could think is the length of cable which might be problem for people who do not have a long HDMI cable.

But since my HDMI cable is pretty long, I dont feel the length of cable is an issue.
