Panasonic SDR-H18 30GB Hard Disk Drive Camcorder with 32x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

Panasonic SDR-H18 30GB Hard Disk Drive Camcorder with 32x Optical Image Stabilized ZoomMy current camcorder is over [..], and I found that I just wasn't using it much anymore. Two reasons: It was a little big to carry around, and it recorded to tape, so deleting 'bad' scenes was not practical until it got to the PC. All the new camcorders are plenty small enough to carry around.

I like the workflow of digital cameras in that you can easily delete the garbage shots after taking them. I wanted the same for a camcorder, which meant DVD or HDD was my choice, despite the possible reduction in end quality as compared to tape (HDD/DVD compress the image, tape doesn't). DVD was out for me since its capacity is very limited, and I just don't trust writing to DVD (I've had too many fail while closing the session on my PC). So it's HDD, even though I compromise image quality over tape.

I also wanted a long zoom lens. With a long zoom lens you have to sacrifice the larger CCD's, and larger CCD's allow for better image quality. Another compromise.

This left me with three final candidates in my price range: Sony DCR-SR42, JVC Everio GZMG155 and Panasonic SDR-H18. The Sony specs list 40x zoom, but the number that counts is the focal range (1.9 to 76), which actually gives you about the same true zoom as the other two (they advertise 32x). So they are equal there.

The final difference came down to price and the image stabilization. Only the Panasonic had optical image stabilization, which generally does a better job than electronic. This is especially important for these long zoom cameras. So the SDR-H18 won, and it was the least expensive also.

Considering the 'compromises' I had to make to go HDD and long zoom, I'm very happy with the image quality when played back on a standard def TV (haven't tried HD TV yet). It's at least as good as my old Digital-8 Sony image. The image stabilization is better than I expected I had no problem holding the shot steady free handed at 32x.

BTW No need to install the included CD. Windows XP recognized the camera and mounted it as a hard drive. Just copy the movies to your system like normal works. You may want to rename them to MPG files though, and set the widescreen flag in the file since the camera doesn't. Search for sdcopy.exe for a free simple utility to copy, rename and set the flag for you.

The only downsides I noticed so far:

Very low light feature on camera is useless as compared to Sony's IR mode. The Pana just makes the exposure time huge, which means you can only record still scenes in very low light. Not a problem for me though as I don't find the need to record in the dark much! Normal indoor light is OK, but not great.

The supplied battery won't last very long on a charge. Amazon has a battery CGA-DU21 which will 3 to 4 times as long for a very low price.

Update on experience with it: I have had the chance to try the video on a 42" LCD HD TV using the S-Video connector. It's not HD for sure, but the quality was acutally pretty good. I expected it to magnify the compressions issues to the point of being distracting. Others in the room actually commented how clean the video looked (the sample was from video taped outdoors in bright light).

One additional negative to add is that you can't delete a shot until you are in playback mode. I'd like to be able to delete it as soon as I've finished shooting it from the record mode thus saving a couple steps. Overall, no regrets.

Overall this camera is a great value.

It is lightweight, easy to use and creates high quality video images. If you have large pockets you can carry it in your pocket. It will make a bit of lump, but it's doable. I have done it.

SELECTABLE VIDEO QUALITY

This camcorder let's you choose the video quality. At the highest video quality it still can capture 7 hours of video. I can't imagine needing that much. I don't think there's anybody on the planet that would appreciate watching a 7 hour video, let alone one that's over 20 hours long in lower resolution mode.

STANDARD AND WIDESCREEN FORMATS

Multiple formats are user selectable. You can select a standard aspect ratio or widescreen format. I prefer widescreen because that's how my TV's are formatted. The only downside of selecting widescreen is that it will only playback in widescreen format on the camera's monitor or directly connected to a TV, and through the free software Panasonic provides. However, the widescreen format won't auto upload to Adobe Premiere Elements video editing software without first loading the footage and then using an obscure "interpret footage" command to force it back to widescreen. Once you know how to the use the interpret footage command to the uploaded scenes it literally takes a second to make the conversion back to widescreen. Windows moviemaker has the same problem and if there is interpretation function I am not aware of it. Finding the command in Adobe Premiere Elments is the hard part. It took calls to Panasonice and Adobe to solve the problem. Adobe support solved the problem. This is simply a camera sofware output issue that Pansonic should probably fix in future releases of the firmware / software.

VIDEO FORMAT AND HARD DISK SPACE

Video files are a proprietary mpeg format that takes a while to read, load and render in Adobe Premiere Elements. And, of course, be prepared for using up a lot of hard drive space to load and store all of the files. However, this is true of any digital camera output. I use a 320 gb external hard drive to store work in progress video files. When finished editing I transcode and burn to DVD and delete the files from my hard drive.

For the average person who only wants to take videos and directly view on their TV this camera is very easy to use.

The display adjusts to a full range of brightness which means it can be used on a bright sunny day. The adjustment is a separate button, not some command buried in the software.

Overall, it is a great value. The provided software works, but you can do much better with an upgraded video editing software or even Windows Moviemaker. Although with Windows Moviemaker it can't read the widescreen format. It's compressed to a standard aspect ratio so everybody looks skinny.

I first bought another brand of video camera but it's output couldn't be read by anything but the bundled software. That camcorder was returned in favor of this unit.

Optical image stabilization is on by default (you can turn it off). The OIS is good although it won't over come full zoom hand held video quality. At full zoom you'd do best to have a tripod.

Low light level is good, but it isn't a night vision camera.

There is a slot for a removable flash card. I popped in a 2 gig card. The last one I bought was only $12. You can record video or stills using this media. This is handy if you want to take stills (see below). I seldom use this feature because I have a Canon SLR with Canon L series lens and I don't shoot in automatic mode with the Canon camera.

STILL CAMERA CAPABILITY

Single camera jpegs can be taken in a 640x480 format (complete with a shudder release sound effect). Still picture quality is acceptable but it isn't a SLR digital camera. Quality is much, much better than a cell phone. Quality is on par with what you had 5-6 years ago with your typical digital still cameras. You don't buy this camera for taking stills although I have even used this at work to capture closeups of quality issues and then switch back to video mode to tell a story surrounding the defect. Let's put it this way, it's a better video camera than a still camera, but for the majority of people who buy point and shoot cameras this works just as well unless you are taking photos you plan on blowing up to poster size.

EDIT: UPDATE 11-30-07

After twice, sometimes three times a week use, I can still say the camcorder works great. I used it for the fall volleyball season for my daughter's high school team. I recorded every game and gave it to the coach for her to review (her request). Using the camcorder reaffirms my purchase decision. Processing a couple of hours of video to minimally edit and transcode to a DVD takes hours. That's a function of the software. Quality was high for a very dimly lit gyms.

I also produced a 36 minute end of season banquet video using mainly still shots interspersed with some video from this camera. This camera's output was easily integrated into the final video production.

SMOOTH TRANSITIONS

One nice characteristic I noticed was the transition between scenes was smooth. I was able to pause the camera during playing sequences and there was jumpiness (is there such a word?) when I paused and restarted the recorder. This may not seem like a big deal but I have had cameras where the camera would shake or move when you function the pause or record button. Obviously, this is a pretty well engineered camcorder to pay attention to such details.

LOW LIGHT PERFORMANCE UPDATE

Low light performance is better than I described earlier in this review. For example, I mounted the camcorder on a tripod and recorded the sports banquet speeches and presentations. The banquet room was dimly lit. The video came out just fine. It is very similar to the colors you see with the human eye. Things tend to become grey at low light levels. However, like I said earlier, you can't expect to go out at night in the country and shoot videos by moonlight. It's not a night vision camera.

LETTING YOUR DAUGHTER USE IT -A CASE STUDY FOR EASY TO USE

I let my daughter use it for a high school video project. She's no videophile or technical whiz. With me providing a simple 30 second tutorial on how to use the camera she was able to record usable scenes for her class project. She did it for her team and another team. I think that's testimony for how easy the camera is to use. The only problem she had was finding the volume control function for playback.

ONE LAST COMMENT

This camcorder does not have a standard viewfinder. It only has the display on the flip open door. I have had no problems without a viewfinder except on sunny days when the sun is directly shining on the LCD screen. Then, and only then, is viewing the image somewhat difficult.

Again, this camcorder is a great value for the money. Truly, it is a best buy.

This is a great camera and while my budget wasn't my primary concern, getting the right product was. Before ever knowing what the price was I had read a review of this camera on CNet.com. The review gave this camera high praise from its editors and put it on the short list of good quality cameras on the market today. So once I read this article I went looking for a few more opinions and the consensus was that this camera would get the job done. So when I went pricing and found out that it was only $400 I thought I was either going to get a great camera at a great price or there was some big conspiracy on the internet and this thing is really a piece of crap. It's not a piece of crap and it is a great camera at a great price.

If you are a gadget person and you are looking for a camera that has a feature set that you may never learn how to use, but are happy that they are available, then this camera is not for you.

There is no view finder for example. However, we don't use view finders any more and if you are like me, I point and laugh at people that look through view finders when they have a perfectly functional 2.5" inch color display in front of them.

Also, this camera doesn't have a light. Now this could be important, especially if it's your intention to shoot in low light situations like a darker room. The picture quality won't be great in low light but if you are like me and like to shoot things in the daytime or in rooms where electricity is present, then this shouldn't be much of a problem for you.

The camera is simply functional and its buttons and switches are designed to provide the user with function that they will most likely use. There is a zoom button, volume button, burn to DVD direct button, record button, menu button, delete button, etc, you get the idea. The view finder is used to view what you are recording and it doesn't double as a touch screen display, which is perfect for me as I have oven mitts for hands. The multi switch is actually a little joystick like you would find on a video game (although it's much smaller) and your thumb can operate all of the onscreen menus with a flick of this joystick. This camera comes with an optical zoom level of 32x. Optical zoom is what the lens creates and in my opinion is the only zoom you should use anyways. However, if you need to view beyond 32x, the camera has a digital zoom of 1000x. The digital zoom is simply the brain inside the camera creating what it thinks is the image based on zoom levels. You would need a very high powered and expensive lens to get to 1000x zoom but who needs that? At 32x you are very close to your subject and the best part of this camera is that if you shake like an Epileptic in an Arcade like I do, the image stabilizer system is second to none. It realizes what you are focused on and then reduces and sometimes illuminates the shake that often times ruins a video. This feature and the zoom are by far the best features a camera can have and Panasonic has hit it out of the park by putting so much focus on it.

Most importantly is the format of the camera, HDD (Hard Disc Drive), like you find in your computer. MiniDV is the standard technology but it is a dead technology. If you want the best of video output then stick with this technology but be warned that the day of the tape is going away. DVD camcorders aren't really DVD's like the ones we rent from the video store. They are 2" discs that record about an hour of footage in a quality setting, which simply isn't enough. The HDD camcorder you are looking at has a 30GB drive which is equivalent to 22 mini DVD's. Moreover, there is an expansion slot on the camera for external memory cards. This slot may not mean much today but we are at the beginning of the HD SD card revolution and soon the general public will be able to buy a 30 GB SD card which five years ago was unheard of. So in essence this $400 camera could double its recording capability without the need to upgrade to another model. This is a big deal.

Here is the procedure that you will use with this camera. You will record little Jimmy getting mauled by the family dog. You will then plug the camera into the computer and upload all the videos to your video file. You will use the software that came with the camera or some other commercially available product and you will edit the video to your hearts content. You will then use your onboard DVD burner ($40 at buydig.com) and burn a copy of the video onto a full size dual layer DVD that can store up to 8 GB of video footage. Then you can give the video to your local law enforcement to show them why it's a bad idea to own a Pit Bull.

This camera is cost effective, it's memory will expand as far as technology will go, you won't be buying 2" DVD's and miniDV cartridges, you won't be storing them either, you will buy full size DVDs that you can burn and play on standard DVD players, and most importantly you will have a good camera that won't break the bank. Now get buying.

I like nature and I like this camcorder! Great zoom with stabilization. Battery lasts a couple of hours and longer if you take many 5 or 10 minute shots. The battery is small and cheap , so having 2 might be nice, but I don't have the need for it at this point.

I took a 119 meg shot and condensed it to around 10 meg , just to show the zoom feature with stabilization and also to show these files can be changed to any format, I condensed it to WMA format for uploading to here.

AT around 40 SECONDS into the clip I zoom all the way out and in again to show what I was seeing with my eyes and what the camcorder picked up. I was sitting in gazebo and there were children playing a few feet from me and ducks and birds interacting with these children, they were sliding one of the tables on the concrete as I was filming this ... so sound is a little distracting in clip. The people on lake are least a 1/3 to 1/2 mile away.

Also take into consideration that any time you take a 119 meg clip and reduce it to only 10 megs you take out the detail, so the actual clip is very clear compared to utube like wma file I made.

I made clips 1 hour after sun went down a few days ago and I could see everything very clearly and it seemed like it was just a rainy day , the only way you could tell it was nighttime was if you saw the street lights and house lights on. I had stopped filming because I couldn't see anything, but when I went home and reviewed the tape, I was amazed, I could have still filmed more. Of course the Colors weren't vibrate but the camcorder saw a lot more and in more color then I was seeing! :)

In house shots in darkness are probably not that good, most camcorders are not that good at indoor night shots without good lighting according to Consumer Reports Nov 07 issue, CR rated this camcorder a Best Buy in Hard Drive models in that issue.

I also made a DVD using software that comes with camcorder and it was easy and looked good on my HDTV.

We were looking for a basic camcorder for home videos, and this matched what we're looking for. One of our main criteria was to buy a HHD camcorder, and at the time Sony and JVC were the only other brands offering HHD camcorders, though both generally had good reviews, it was Panasonics Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) that won us over, BIG difference in video quality when compared.

Pros: Hard Disk Drive (no need for extra tapes, DVDs etc), OIS (very clear and stable video, even when zooming in), light camcorder (easy for travel), intuitive user interface, good sound.

Cons: Nothing as of the moment I write this, and I have been enjoying my camcorder for 2 weeks now!

Note on the software: I previously saw a review commenting how bad the FREE Editing Software was, I would like to add a note that the software does the job (as good as any of these free software are when you get them for free with your electronics). I have successfully imported my videos to my computer, have been able to trim my videos... if you need to trim the middle of the video, it's a bit more work with this software as you need to first edit 1 version with only front end of video you want, then second edit with only back end of video, and finally combining them into your final 3rd version with middle part deleted. (sorry this seems obvious, but that review was complaining about not being able to trim the middle of their video with this software...so my point is, you can do it, it just might not be as efficient as using the more commercial/professional editing tools out there).

Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-135mm AF-S DX f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF Nikkor Zoom Lens

Nikon D300 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-135mm AF-S DX f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF Nikkor Zoom LensThe move to the Nikon D300 was made to take advantages of the newer features that were not present (especially the greater pixel capacity) in the D100 which I had for several years. It was time to move up.

The screen is larger with the ability to display additional information regarding exposure etc. The controls are neatly arranged and handle better than the D100 and it is more comfortable your hands. Auto focus and exposure metering are much more advanced over the D100.

While I am still very much in the "learn mode" with this camera I am satisfied the move was worth it. Having not moved to the D200 when it came out I cannot comment on the value of moving from that model to the D300.

I had shopped around on the web only to find multiple cases of much lower prices but they did not include the typical box items of the charger, battery etc. In this regard be careful of the lo-ball prices.

This is the best cost/benefit camera in the market today.

I bought this kit with 18-135 lens but if I was to buy now, I'd rather go for the more expensive kit with 18-200 as its a better quality lens and more versatile zoom length.

If you can afford it, BUY IT, you will not regret the investment.

Bought mine at amazon.com and have no complaints about it. Delivered on time just before Christmas.

The D300 is fabulous. Nikon has given the serious amateur/professional a great camera at a very reasonable price. I can't imagine what the D3 does for $3000 more but I don't want to find out. This will be the last camera you ever need (at least until the D400 comes out).

Quality and features are what you expect from Nikon. I particularly like the burst modes although you need a fast card to keep up.

I recommend this camera to any photographer without any reservations.

BTW, I bought mine off Amazon. No kickback from them or Nikon, unfortunately.

The camera has lived up to the professional reviews that I read during my research. The high ISO performance has been outstanding. My main use so far has been fast action sports (volleyball) inside low light gyms where flashes are not permitted and I have gotten very nice action shots. For those who never venture off the automatic setting of their current camera, I would not recommend this camera since it does not even have one. There is a learning curve, but it is well worth the effort.

I have used this camera professionally since 2008 and it paid itself off several times with all the lenses, two flashes sb800 and the 900! If I upgrade I will not sell this camera it is tough and reliable the Matrix metering is great. Great color, fast focus and awesome for time lapse HDR Photography. There are more expensive cameras with more features and bling but this camera will make 20x30 color prints look fantastic!

Chromakey Green Muslin Screen 9'x15'

Chromakey Green Muslin Screen 9'x15'In regards to most professional green muslin screens, this was a little on the dark side, but still able to key out pretty well.

Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase.

UPDATE: Muslin Screen is not TRUE chroma key green, its too dark and has faded fairly quickly.

Wow, at first I was a little disappointed because Amazon had listed the ship date at about two weeks, but I was amazed when item arrived in 2 days. Very fast shipping, and products are in good condition. Not your typical muslin, closer to a really large bed sheet. Overall, I am happy with the product for the price that I had paid. Test images came out fine. Will do business with again.

Buy Chromakey Green Muslin Screen 9'x15' Now

I just want to start off by saying how quickly this package got to mecowboystudio shipped it in a day and it got here about 4 days later! The quality is excellent, and it is not just a bed spread. It is obviously not a sheet because it is thicker, heavier, non-reflective, and all in all more durable. 9 X 15' is massive. It doesn't seem like that much when you order it, but when you unfold it in your house, its huge. I used diaper pins to make it 9 X 7.5', and it still takes up the better part of my basement wall. Also, no need to invest in one of those $60 stands. I mean, if you really want to have something to support about 3-4 backdrops or heavier things, be my guest, but I constructed a perfect PVC piping backdrop stand out of 1.25'' PVC pipe, and it works perfectly! Unfortunately, the screen comes in a box folded, so it can have some nasty creases. It would have been a little bit better had it been rolled, but that would be more expensive. You can easily get rid of the creases by spritzing them with a bit of warmish water and putting the screen under tension. Let it air dry and repeat this several times and it should become a flawless, pro-looking green screen! The green is also a perfect shade of green when lit up well. I used the CowBoy Studio 3 Piece Lighting Softbox Set to light it, and it keys out perfectly on iMovie, etc. To wrap it up, I highly encourage this green screen; with the correct frame, a bit of piping, some clamps, good lighting, and a little bit of manipulating, you can have a pro-looking green screen! Enjoy!

Im using this for green screen work with a DSLR. The color is excellent, great contrast, keep in mind green screen is not perfect, it will always reflect some green onto your subject so make sure you have good photo editing software light photoshop.

Good size, solid uniform color. Thinner than i expected but i honsetly have never bought a backdrop before, so i assume this is about the standard.

buy with confidance.

Ill put a quick photo of the green screen in action.

Pro's: The size. This is prefect for my home studio in the basement. I can hang it up via the pre-sewn loop and get it about 8 feet in the air and there is plenty left over for me to stand on so I can "chroma-key" to a nothing background.

Con's: Thin. I have this hung about 6 feet from a wall. If I dont light the front I can see throught it. Would probaly work better if up against a wall or had another one of these directly behind it.

After a couple of hours and several "shoots" I finally tried keying out this back drop. In both Sony Vegas 10 and HitFilm Ultimate this screen left a residual blue film in the frame. I had to really work at it to get the whole thing to dissapear. My guess is the problem is the that it is so thin. Not sure if I will keep this or not.

Supereyes B005 0.1X ~ 200X Handheld USB Digital Microscope Endoscope Loupe Otoscope Magnifier with 11mm Tube Diameter Tripod LEDWatch out! They claim it works with Mac and Linux but there is no software for either OS. Documentation is virtually nonexistent. There comes a small form factor CD with it,which can only be read if you have a tray type CD reader. It is not much use anyways, because much of the stuff on it is in Chinese and whatever comes in English is just a copy of the printed "instructions." I don't know if it works with Windows. I'll post once I find out.

Update: I stand corrected: With a Mac one can use PhotoBooth at the software end to see the image live and to take snapshots. The only annoyance is that PhotoBooth reverses the image and has no switch to change that.

Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera & 18-55mm VR + Tamron 70-300mm Di Lens + 16GB Card + Filters + C

Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera & 18-55mm VR + Tamron 70-300mm Di Lens + 16GB Card + Filters + Case + Accessory KitDisclaimer: I'm not a professional photographer, but have some experience. This is my first DSLR.

Delivery was very fast, and I literally spent an hour just unwrapping and trying on all the stuff that was included in the kit.

The camera itself is wonderful: right size/weight, easy controls, and extremely energy-efficient. 95% of the time, the main display is used only for displaying information about the settings. To see the "live view" as is on compact cameras, you must flip a spring-loaded switch, which is nice. There's a GUIDE/HELP setting to teach you about the controls, what they do and how to achieve good results for the subject you're photographing (e.g, how to photograph fast action, portraits, etc). It asks you a few questions, and configures the camera accordingly. If you're overwhelmed by the number of parameters, don't be: even in AUTO this camera takes some amazing photos. I've handed it to a few newbies, and they were amazed by the results.

So far I've took about 1000 pictures with it, and have yet to fill the included 16GB card (that is in JPEG-fine/large mode). The included case is a bit small for everything included, but with a bit of work you can make it fit. The extra lens (Tamron) is a switchable tele-macro, and although it's a bit noisy, can get some pretty amazing detail. I recommend a monopod/tripod, as it does not have image stabilization.

The video recording was better than expected. Crisp 1080p, but limited to 10 min clips. The internal microphone captured clear sound in most occasions. You'll need a micro-HDMI cable (not included) to watch it on a monitor.

So far, no regrets. I just wish they included another battery (I bought another one later) and a monopod in the kit.

I've this bundle for about two weeks. All items here were included with the suprise than the SD card was a type class 10, not a type C6 as it is in the image of the publication, the rest of the items looks like are from very good quality (especially the bag I really like it). the shipped box was big 'cause the pieces but were well packed.

The four stars are because the Tamron lens is a old version without vibration controller, a big problem when you're trying to take a picture with 100mm or more without a tripod (macro mode is avaliable only between 180-300mm, think about this). I don't understand why but the oficial nikkor lens included with the D3100 have a kind of plastic base, another thing to consider if you change a lot the lens without care.

For last I'd had a problem with the card the first day, It was corrupted for some strange reason (I don't know if it was the usb-SD adapter, the pc or the camera), but after a few tries with some sd readers I was able to read it only for re-formating and use it so far without a problem. Again i don't know if it was a fault of the hardware or it was me.

Conclution: it's a good bundle for starting in this photographic world.

Camera is a mid grade entry level and decent quality.Everything shipped adn recieved with no blemmishes or defects. I would say I like this better than the canon T3i. The Tamron lens is great as well. I couldnt be happier with this package. Will check back here for future needs. Was nice recieving a class 10 SD card as well, since photo was a class 6. LVF32 Swi-View 3" CARRY SPEED LCD VIEW FINDER 3:2 FITS T2i 60D LCDVF Z-FINDER

LVF32 Swi-View 3' CARRY SPEED LCD VIEW FINDER 3:2 FITS T2i 60D LCDVF Z-FINDERI just wanted to mention that I've owned this product for only a week and I really like it, but there are a couple of things bothering me that I hope will be fixed down the line.

1. The felt (or whatever material it is) inside the view finder is not the greatest. It's causing tons of lint particles to land on the magnification piece. Every time I use it, I have to dust it out. The more I do, the more the material comes apart and causes distracting stringy pieces to appear in my field of view. Very annoying.

2. Whether it's the fact that the frame is slightly bent (which the company boasts is not possible, but was in fact bent straight out of the box) or the nipples/tabs on the frame are slightly off on mine, or both, the eye piece is not fitting in properly so it is not flush against the frame. Even if I work it on, at some point, I hear one of the tabs pop out. The magnet is strong enough to hold it on, but this is causing the unit to not be as secure as if it were on correctly.

3. The rubber material picks up lint like crazy.

Other than these issues, I have no complaints. However, the aforementioned may become a problem. I'd also recommend providing, or at least making available, an eye cup pad. That enormous eye piece is not going to be fun when a sweaty face is pressed against it.

Have had mine for about 2 weeks now and use it with my T2i. This has changed my life when recording video. Not only does it make pulling focus that much easier but all of my shots are now steadier when holding it to my eye. For $60 or so, you can not go wrong. Get this, I promise you will not regret it!

Buy LVF32 Swi-View 3" CARRY SPEED LCD VIEW FINDER 3:2 FITS T2i 60D LCDVF Z-FINDER Now

I bought the Carry Speed LCD View finder for my 60D. It seemed to be well built and the reviews were good.

I was a little concerned about getting a view finder with out a adjustable diopter but that shouldn't be an issue if it was built correctly or so I thought. when it arrived, I installed it, seemed to be well built. Magnets hold very well but the image was slightly soft to the eye when looking through the finder. I pulled the Z-finder away from the LCD screen and it was in perfect focus at about 1 inch away. Could my vision be that far off or is it the z-finder? I had my 10 year old son try it, he's got youth and perfect vision going for him and sure enough he had the same problem.

Needless to say I am very disappointed that the Carry Speed Z-Finder has a serious flaw.

This might work for some people but not for me.

Having an adjustable diopter is important.

I've been pricing 3:2 viewfinders for my Canon T2i. I was about to purchase another model which cost about the same as this one, but did not come with the eyecup. The eyecup brought the price up to about $30 more than the CarrySpeed VFinder. As soon as I saw this at a very popular auction site at a price lower than similar models with the same features, I jumped on it. The unit is built very well. It came with a lanyard, two steel frames, a cleaning cloth, and the eyecup attached. I attached the metal frame to the lcd cover already attached to my camera. I haven't used any other similar units to compare this one with, but I don't imagine one can find one with the same features in this price range.

Want LVF32 Swi-View 3" CARRY SPEED LCD VIEW FINDER 3:2 FITS T2i 60D LCDVF Z-FINDER Discount?

This is a well-made and efficient alternative to the significantly higher priced pro-level product. There is no question that Canon 60D owners (and T2i owners should also purchase the CARRY SPEED LCD VIEW FINDER 3:2L METAL TRIPOD MOUNT FRAME FOR CANON 60D T3i 600D. By using the frame you can avoid having to glue anything to your camera. When the frame is detached from the camera, the 60D articulating LCD works normally and lays flat, face down against the body, which it cannot do if you glue a metal frame to the LCD face. I love this product when used in combination with the specified optional frame. There are two "cons," if you will: (1) The cost has been kept down by not including a diopter. However, I am able to effectively use the Z-Finder while wearing my glasses with little or no inconvenience. (2) CarrySpeed should have added a protective coating on the optional frame so that it does not scratch the LCD or other camera parts. I performed this fix myself see my review of the Carry Speed LCD View Finder 3:2l Metal Tripod Mount Frame. Oddly, Amazon and/or their partners do not make these two complementary products available from the same source. However, both items arrived promptly and at the exact same time.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS25 16.1 MP Compact Digital Camera with 40x Intelligent Zoom (Black)

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS25 16.1 MP Compact Digital Camera with 40x Intelligent ZoomThis is the 8th Panasonic Lumix camera I've purchased since my first in 2008. For some reason the ZS25 reminds me of my SZ7 looks-wise Panasonic Lumix SZ7 14.1 MP High Sensitivity MOS Digital Camera with 10x Optical Zoom (Black) -it's the rounded top to allow for the lens. Even though the SZ7 is over $150 cheaper than the ZS25, it takes much sharper photos. However, the SZ7 doesn't have full PASM manual controls and has only 10X optical zoom. They both start-up fast, faster than any other cameras I own/have previously owned, fast focusing (unless you are zooming out at the max), fast shutter response, fast recycling to take the next photo. (I always use Class 10 SDHC cards). If only the SZ7 had full manual controls, it would be THE perfect camera as the photos are much more sharp to my liking.

PROS:

-This is a fast camera for focusing, shutter response, etc.

-Leica lens LOVE Leica! Too bad it can't help the processor--or whatever causes the noise.

-You can optically zoom during the video and the zoom motor is quiet.

-Metal body (aluminum?) although it sounds like plastic when I tap on it, it has good build quality.

-CMOS sensor.

-Creative Controls: Like these, some never available in previous Panasonic cameras

-Made in Japan!

CONS: Or, what the heck is up, Panasonic?

- MAJOR Deal Breaker! It's almost like you have to set your ISO to 400 or less; it seems anything above ISO 400 starts looking out-of-focus but I think it's Panasonic's new way of smoothing out the noise.

-No separate battery charger, the battery charges inside the camera. This is starting to become the "new normal" with Panasonic cameras, other than the LX7. Quit being so cheap Panasonic, supply us with a separate battery charger!

- No RAW, for the RAW enthusiasts (I am not)

Panasonic photos are notorious for being "soft", these are more than soft and I'm not happy with this aspect AT ALL. Colors are good and natural. It's the sharpness which is "off" for me. And so the reason for my 3 star rating!!

The 1080 video is decent, but not as good as Sony cameras provide (cheaper ones, like this camera): Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX10V 18.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera with 16x Optical Zoom and 3.0-inch LCD (Silver) (2012 Model). With the ZS25, you can optically zoom during the video, the zoom motor is quiet and you can also take a photo while shooting a video (limited to 2 pics).

Battery life pretty much average. I got 200 photos and a couple videos before the low battery indicator was down to 1/3 left.

I've always loved the Quick Menu feature on Pannies and this one is in the correct location (lower right corner, sometimes they are on the left side, lower right, such as the LX7). What I don't like on this camera is they eliminated the playback switch, now it's a button. On older Panasonic cameras, I kept the Playback Switch on playback when I put the camera in the case, as that prevented accidental zoom of the lens if the camera accidentally was turned on inside the case. Can't do that with this camera.

Yarii's Conclusion: This is the first Panasonic I've rated 3 stars. I struggled and decided the ZS25 is not worthy of 4 stars. I'm disappointed; Panasonic should have done better. This camera replaced the ZS15. If you're happy with your ZS15 (or ZS20) there's no reason to upgrade to the ZS25; I wouldn't even call it an upgrade, it's more like a downgrade. If you don't care about having manual controls, check out the SZ7 (see link above) and save over $150. I think the ZS25 (and the ZS30) are both WAY overpriced, and I think Panasonic has run out of ideas and they came out with new models only because all the other camera manufacturers do for the CES.

Sad, but true I've owned numerous smaller Panasonic Lumix cameras. The smaller, pocket-size versions all work well and last about 2-3 years before they go bad. By that time the technology changes anyway, so it's not a big deal for me to think about replacing them with the latest version.

They have always been well-made, and delivered excellent quality pictures. Expected the same for this one.

Tried it for over a week, but was just not loving it. The build quality of the Lumix DMC-XS25 was not as good as it should be. They seemed to have replaced some parts with more plastic than in past models, and the quality of the pictures was not perfect either. Disappointing, as I have loved all my other Panasonic cameras and recommended them to others. I still like the smaller versions they offer, but this one did not deliver.

It felt like it was going to break, and the photos at 16 MP didn't seem as crisp and sharp as you'd think they should be.

Instead, ended up paying less than $100 more for the Sony DSC-HX20V, which seemed like more of an investment but looking back I cannot imagine NOT doing it. The Sony is head and shoulders above this Panasonic. The only downside in comparison is that it's not as fast as the Panasonic (i.e., when you are trying to take pictures in rapid succession the Panasonic is much faster, as the Sony evaluates each photo as it's taken and corrects it electronically).

I still like Panasonic, but for this specific camera it's just not up-to-par.

Buy Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS25 16.1 MP Compact Digital Camera with 40x Intelligent Zoom (Black) Now

I just got this camera in time for the first nice weather weekend on the East Coast and we went to NYC with the family for a nice day in Central Park.

I purchases a ZS10 2 years ago and skipped last year's model to buy the ZS25 this year.

It is a very fast camera from start up time to auto focus time and shutter release. I can't even tell the difference in speed compared to my DSLR (5 yrs old)

Lumix is known for superior lens quality I read an article that they have a very close working relationship with Leica which speaks for itself. So I wasn't surprised at the image quality even at max zoom. BTW keep in mind this is a 24 mm to 480 mm lens meaning that 24 mm is a nice wide angle comes in handy for indoor and nice group shots.

The reason I sound so exciting is the video capability of this camera. We went to a school concert the other night and I took some incredible videos of our little girl on stage. Just make sure you switch the recoding mode to MP4 the default setting is on AVCHD the compression mode that no computer can read!

The videos I took were great not too noisy even though it was real dark.

I am very pleased and feel this is a great little camera that is compact but gives you lots of shooting options.

I think that this is great camera as long as you do not attempt to print a photo on letter size paper. Results will not be that good. The main problem that this system has is that it compresses JPEGs to 180 dpi. Thus, trying to do any re-touching is out of question. So, if you are planning to do 6x4 prints, email family and friends, or upload to the Facebook, this will do great. Focus is fast and I had no problems catching up with my 4 year old. However, I need something that can print on larger paper, and for 16MP, results were unacceptable. I have exchanged it for Nikon Coolpix 9500S

The 20x zoom and 16MP sensor combined with the compact size makes this a great pocket or travel camera, particularly when I don't want to take my larger interchangeable lens camera with me.

The 10fps burst mode makes shooting my son's sports easy and yields great results, and I like that I can take full HD Video with the same device.

I've experimented with the creative controls, and the modes help me take more creative/artistic photos and never need to edit them on my PC.

Definitely worth a look!

Nikon Coolpix 5400 5.1 MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoom

Nikon Coolpix 5400 5.1 MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoomthe nikon coolpix 5400 is a solid 5MP, 4x zoom camera with a strong feature set. but it has a few shortcomings so make sure to consider its competition.

pros:

5MP and 4x optical zoom.

good color response, average resolution for 5MP.

photos have very low noise.

allows a great deal of manual control.

macro mode better than most.

low redeye occurrence.

virtually free of chromatic aberrations.

shadow highlights maintained.

timed exposures up to 10 minutes.

expandable with a boatload of lenses, flashes, and other accessories from nikon.

wider lens than most.

supports CF card types I and II.

flip-out LCD display protects LCD when not in use.

high resolution LCD with anti-reflective coating that actually works.

very comfortable to hold with a deep hand grip made of soft rubber.

compact body feels solid.

reprogrammable FUNC button, and initial record menu.

above average battery life (i still recommend getting a spare though).

cons:

some lens distortion, especially at maximum zoom.

images occasionally appear soft around corners.

slow response interface, non-intuitive menus.

no AF assist light very puzzling why nikon doesn't provide this.

to add insult to injury, this camera has a hard time focusing in low light so an AF assist light would really come in handy.

average auto focus speed.

buffering issue? the camera locks towards the end of write process.

slow CF write speed / processing.

you're on your own when using manual focus it doesn't show focus distance.

LCD smaller than competition.

RAW mode not supported.

flimsy cover for CF slot.

no live histogram in record mode.

no support for external Speedlight features such as AF assist or flash zoom.

connectivity options all over the place rather than in a central location.

uses proprietary battery so make sure you add some $$ to your budget to get a spare.

the supplied 16MB CF card is inadequate again, more $$ for more memory.

the coolpix 5400 is a solid camera from nikon with a very strong feature set. it will produce very good pics in point and shoot mode but still has full manual control if you want to be more creative with your shots. i've given this a 4-star rating because of two important factors for me: the lack of an AF assist light and the dead time at the end of write process. i would suggest that you consider the canon g5 and the sony dsc-v1 before committing to the nikon 5400.

i hope this helps with your buying decision. peace.

What can I say? I love the 5400! It is my second from the Coolpix series. My first was a CP 880 that took a fall so the 5400 was a replacement. It's well worth the money. I looked around a lot and couldn't find anything I liked from other manufacturers that packed the features and flexibility of the 5400.

If you are a new digital user, the auto mode and scene modes are great. I usually shoot in P or M modes and can turn the dial to Automatic mode and hand it to my wife who likes the ability to point and shoot without thinking about adjusting anything. You can grow into this camera if you don't know yet how to shoot manually.

The 15 different scene modes to choose from are excellent. The panoramic assist mode is particularly cool. You can shoot a panoramic horizontally, vertically or in a 360 degree circle. You take photos and then put them together after download with the ArcSoft software that comes with the camera. It even allows you to fine-tune the pictures in case they do not align they way you want them too.

Pros:

Turn a fully automatic camera into a fully manual camera with the turn of a dial. I haven't found anything this camera cannot do that my recently auctioned SLR could do. Picture quality is equal to me.

The camera feels great to hold. All of the buttons are in convenient locations. Menus can be customized to show what you adjust frequently and you can store two different user settings using the function button.

5-shot buffer is great. It will take photos as long as you hold down the shutter release. It only stores the last five frames even if you have held the shutter release down long enough to make 20 exposures. Also does time lapse.

Shutter speed from Bulb to 1/4000.

Crisp Macro shooting.

The Vari-Angle display is much better than a fixed position display.

Three metering optionsMatrix, Center-weighted and Spot are very effective.

Takes Type I and II compact flash. I wouldn't go with anything less than 256mb. Make sure it is USB compatible memory if you plan to use a Compact Flash reader in a USB port.

Hot shoe for accessories is a great addition. When a speedlight is attached, you can set the camera to fire the internal flash and speedlight or you can turn off the internal flash and use only the speedlight. This is great if you want to bounce your speedlight and use the internal for a fill-flash. It also works with a SC-17 remote cable if you want to get the flash off the camera for close up/macro shots. (If you are thinking about getting a Nikon speedlight, go with the SB-80DX or find an old SB-28 or SB-28DX versus going with the SB-50DX. It's worth the extra money if you are going to do any manual shooting/adjusting of speedlight. There is no manual mode on the SB-50DX so you can't really fine tune lighting if you are shooting with the camera in manual mode.)

Battery life is good (about 1.5 2 hrs.) It comes with a charger and 1 battery. A second (or 2CR5) as a back-up in my case has come in handy.

Cons:

The autofocus is not very good in low light situations. I have a Nikon SB-28 speedlight with autofocus assist but the 5400 doesn't activate it. I knocked off half a star for that.

You have to go through a 1/4 view screen before going to full-screen view when using the Quick Review. I think it would be better if it went straight to the full-screen view and did away with the 1/4 screen view. (-1/4 star.)

The only option for adding filters is the HN-CP10 hood with 77mm filters. It's great to have a hood large enough to stay out of wide angle compositions but the 77mm filters are very expensive. (last 1/4 star)

Card cover is flimsy. I have a card reader and each time I open the door to remove the card, I think about how flimsy it is. The 880 had a much more sturdy door.

Area through the viewfinder is significantly different than what you see in the monitor. I read somewhere it is about 35% less through the viewfinder than the monitor.

Overall, it's a great camera for the beginner or advanced user. As a result of purchasing this camera, I shoot only digital and don't miss my SLR one bit. The owner's manual is 160 pages and thoroughly explains all the camera's features. I've had it for 3 months now and am still learning what this camera can do.

Buy Nikon Coolpix 5400 5.1 MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoom Now

Although I have had years of experience with conventional cameras in both 35mm and medium format, the Nikon Coolpix 5400 is the first digital camera I have owned. I had grown weary of traveling with a 35mm and several lenses, or even more bulky medium format cameras.

Other reviewers have amply written about the features of this camera. I am going to focus on performance.

The Coolpix 5400 has good optics. I have shot the equivalent of several rolls of film on it. The photos have been crisp, had faithful color rendition without any glaring digital artifacts, and really don't need any software manipulation. So far, so good.

All is not roses, however. The Coolpix 5400 is very, very, very slow in writing from the a/d converter to the flashcard. Fire off a bunch of shots in continuous mode and get ready to wait. And wait some more. Smokers will have time for a cigarette or two; others could take a short bus ride or file their nails. It's that bad. I find this to be inexcusable in a camera sold at the original price point of the 5400. In fact, a lot of less expensive cameras are quicker. Canons don't seem to do this as poorly as the Nikon 5400 and Sony with its new V3 may be the fastest prosumer camera on the block for the time being. I think most other name brands will be quicker also. I should point out everything is relative: all point and shoot and prosumer digital cameras will be much slower than a digital SLR.

Another shortcoming: the autofocus in dim light problem that has been amply documented by other reviewers. This has not bothered me that much, but it is a problem to be aware of (this problem is not unique to Nikon).

A former shortcoming, the lack of a RAW file format has been rectified. You can now download firmware enabling RAW files from the Nikon USA website. It is up to you whether you want to utilize the RAW format. RAW is essentially uncompressed, but I doubt you'd be able to discern any real differences between a RAW or JPEG photo at normal print size.

Were it not for the glitches I listed above, I'd highly recommend the camera to just about anyone. As it is, the Coolpix 5400 is suitable for someone like a landscape photographer who takes a long time to compose a picture and has some patience; but it's not for the person who wants to take action shots and review them quickly.

The Coolpix 5400 has been recently discontinued by Nikon, and, depending where you shop. the price has dropped from a bit to enormously. That may make its few flaws more acceptable to the new buyer. My advice: shop around and try to use the camera you are interested in buying as much as possible. Online reviews can provide a good guide, but you really need to put your hands on a camera and run through the controls to see if it is right for you. What feels good in my hand may not in yours.

Hope this has been of some help.

Read Best Reviews of Nikon Coolpix 5400 5.1 MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoom Here

After having read through all the reviews I thought I'd contribute my input on this camera since a lot of people had something negative to say.

I'm a former Coolpix 5000 user and went for the newer version handing down my older version, and I must say the 5400 is indeed a better camera.

Before I get into that, I must first say that if you're a beginner user or searching for your first digital camera, the 5400 is probably not for you and I would recommend investing your money on a high end Canon which focuses on point and shoot, quick and easy, no fuss photos. Although this camera does have point and shoot capabilities, the camera is clearly designed to be tweaked and played with to get a professional image. This camera is the grade in between a consumer and professional camera and you'll immediately see and feel that when you begin to use the camera.

As for what remarks I've seen regarding fuzziness, blurriness or quality of images... the 5400 produces crystal clear, professional images once you've taken the time to learn how to use the camera and produce the images. If you're not willing to sit down and learn how to use the camera, you're wasting your money. Of course, if you're a previous Nikon Coolpix user it will be a relatively easy learning curve.

Frankly, who cares where the camera was made? Every element on the 5400 works and functions great. Nothing on the 5400 has been overlooked or "skimped" over. This camera's been on the top 10 at PC World for months since its release and for good reason.

My favorite feature compare to the 5000 is that I'm not always removing the lens cap to do simple tasks such as downloading images into my computer. The menu is also a lot better and it's a lot easier to navigate between the different shooting modes.

The features have already been thoroughly reviewed by other users, but overall this camera is an excellent camera with more features and absolute control then you could imagine. If you want to be creative about photography and get quality, professional images, then this camera is undoubtedly meant for you.

Want Nikon Coolpix 5400 5.1 MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoom Discount?

Got a $200 rebate from Nikon on this camera and couldn't pass it up and never happier. Very good all around performance, a few small problems (no Focus Assist light and fairly small LCD are some) but overall a solid camera with a lot of features and unbeatable at the price.

For those who are having problems focusing in low light I have to ask, are you shooting on a tripod or by hand? Take advantage of the nice feature whereby this camera shows you the exposure time right on the LCD when taking pictures, at medium and low light levels the camera will often have an exposure time of 1 second or more, this will lead to a blurry shot if it's not heald perfectly steady.

If you are having blurry shots at low light, try the same shot on a tripod or just sitting on something solid, I bet the shot will be crystal clear and very bright (I took some late twilight shots tonight and they look almost like midday with the right settings!).

Many features seems advanced for a camera of this price range, and sometimes at the cost of point and shoot ability, but if you are looking for a good prosumer level camera I have to say this feels like a solid bet.

Toshiba Camileo X400 Camcorder

Toshiba Camileo X400 CamcorderI purchased the X400 from Best Buy online. It had only been out a short whle and the feature set was compelling for me. Having been using a standard definition mini DV camcorder for years, this was my first entry into HD recording. My primary use was to record my son's gymnastics metts.

I shot a brief video outside to get used to the controls. The results were amazing crisp video with vibrant color. I was pretty psyched. Then I tried recording at the next gym meet. The resulting video was blurry. Strangely, the clarity of the picture would go in and out of focus. It appeared the camcorder was constantly attempting to autofocus but could never get there. I looked through the manual for help but could find nothing regarding this. I thought perhaps I should turn off the autofocus but could not find a way to do this. I experimented further changing other controls, resolution, auto stabilization, and light settings. Still the video was blurry.

Next step was to see if Toshiba could help. I went to the support section of Toshiba's web site. There was a user's forum but nothing on the X400. There was not a form or email address so I phoned the support number. I thought they might give me suggestions on how to correct the issue. I was wrong. They told me I would need to return the camcorder to Toshiba. So I boxed it up and sent it back. I was disappointed in the customer service in that they could not even offer any suggestions to resolve the issue.

Figuring that the X400 was defective, with the credit I decided to try the X416. It is the exact same camcorder with the exception of having 16GB of built in memory. (The X400 had no built in memory but relied solely on SD card). Unfortunately it is exhibiting the same deficiencies as the X400. Unless I can get better results out of the video, this will be returned as well.

The other issue worth noting with both the X400 and X416 is the battery life. It is pretty short. I am lucky to get 1 hours worth of video before the thing is spent.

I have purchased several Toshiba products in the past and been happy with the items and experience. I think their TVs are very good. But it appears they missed the mark with the Camileo HD camcorders. As disappointing as the camcorder is, the customer service is equally so.

This camera will not focus. It constantly moves in and out of focus and there is no way to stop it. I DO NOT recommend purchasing this camera.

Low quality of the battery, it only lasts 1 hour ... I'm in for warranty claim.

The camcorder works great, excellent zoom and has a good quality recording and the best, is light.

I bought this camera about 6 months ago. It is absolutely the worst camcorder I have ever owned, and I have owned several. It is HORRIBLE in low light. Seriously, its like you are recording through a thin film of tomato soup. It is average in bright sunshine, though I have seen non-HD camcorders with sharper picture. To top it all off, there is some kind of glitch, where if you record while plugged in (cause the battery only lasts about 15 minutes)it will just shut off in the middle of your recording, without saving.

Last, and WORST of all, there is no way to disable the autofocus, which constantly bounces in and out of focus, with the speed of a championship ping-pong match. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get good video with this camera....

Olympus SZ-31MR iHS 3D Still Digital Camera with 32GB Card + Case + Battery + Tripod + Accessory KitOlympus is very reliable and this camera is great for hiking and camping, It is extremely light weight, with a fast shutter and great optical zoom. Throw in a 32 gb card, extra battery and very light weight tripod and you have a great deal.

Love the camera. Received one battery with the camera and one with the kit (description was not clear. The screen protector is generic size, so needs to be cut. But great to have one immediately, so I could install and use the camera ASAP. Make sure you buy a separate battery charger. This kit only includes the cable to charge the battery in the camera. Don't recommend that process. Use a separate battery charger, so you don't risk damage to the camera due to a battery problem.
