Sony DCR-DVD650 DVD Camcorder

Purchased this camera for my wife last month, and have since taken a vacation, and recorded several family gatherings. The video quality this camera gives is wonderful, and creates a steady image, even with my shaky hands. The zoom range is impressive as well. Still images were great during the day, and the camera is FAST. It captures the image almost immediately, better than our stand alone digital camera. The focus isn't always dead on when you move the camera around quickly, but it recovers well enough. The reason for the 4-star rating is that this camera didn't offer a lot in the area of night time picture taking and video capture. The video leaves less to be desired, as the lenses capture enough light to make sense of what is going on, but the camera is not usable at night. Now that may have more to do with the fact that I haven't figured out better settings, or am just completely missing a flash feature I haven't seen, but in either case, I still need to carry around my digital camera for night shots. As a video camera, this product blows everything out of the water that I have ever used in the video quality department. All in all, I am happy with my purchase, and will maybe find that the one shortfall with the product is in fact a problem with the user (me) and not the product.

I've had this item for approximately 6 months and am just now getting into doing reviews. Below are my thoughts on the Sony DCR-DVD650 Handycam Camcorder:

Pros:

Nice design

easy to use

great viewfinder

able to take still pictures in addition to the video

option to use DVD or Memory Stick for recording/photos

Cons:

DVD's on standard quality will only record for 30 minutes-this is not ideal for those wanting to record their childs play, or a graduation or anything that may last longer than 30 minutes. For this you would need a large memory stick to accomodate then you can use your home PC to put the recording from the memory stick to a standard sized DVD.

As expected the digital zoom gets "grainy" in appearance when you zoom in close to the maximum allowed. This is tolerable, but just realize you aren't going to get as good a picture of something you are zooming in on as you would get if the image was actually closer.

All-in-all I am extremely happy with the purchase and think that it is possibly the best buy in its price range. I would purchase it again in a heartbeat. With that said, the day I win the lottery or have a lot of money to spend I'm sure I'd purchase a more expensive model with slightly better zoom and built in memory in addition to the DVD recording capabilities.

I just bought this camera to replace my old Hitachi camcorder and this camera is awesome. The video quality is great the sound is excellent and it is Mac compatible for those who may be wondering it will work on imovie. But this camera is lightweight and the discs do not need to be finalized before you put them in a dvd player or import them to a computer, you just hook up the usb cord and import the video quick and easy. It does come with it's own software that is only compatible with windows which I dont have so I dont know if its any good.

But so far I am very pleased with this camera perfect for anyone who loves to film themselves and edit the footage. Really good buy for a great price.

If you have been confused by conflicting claims about whether or not Sony camcorders are compatible with the Mac OS, this is what our experience shows. We are MAC users and bought this, in part, based on reviews that while the included software by SONY does not support the MAC OS (nor does SONY claim that it does), that I-movie would recognize the camcorder and file format used by this recording device. Alas, when we first connected the camcorder to our MAC, it did recognize the camcorder but did not recognize the file format (MPG) as a movie format, hence we could not open our recordings and edit them. After some further research, we discovered that Leopard software works with this format while Tiger cannot. Moreover, freeware video conversion programs like Handbrake, are no longer being supported for Tiger OS.

I did not try, but suspect, that upgrading to Quicktime Pro or its MPEG add on may resolve the issue.

As for the camera, it is compact, the touchscreen is convenient and relatively user friendly but the menus are not completely intuitive. As I received the camera shortly before having to use it, I ran it on the easy mode automatic settings. Standard Play (SP) seemed to produce better quality than High Quality (HQ) settings, oddly enough, but that may have had to do with ambient lighting. The battery lasted a good two hours with the LCD screen active. A 4 GB memory stick holds a little over an hour of recording, as advertised. The quality of the image and sound seems very good for this price point.

Our first camcorder, also a Sony, did very well for us and still works, but it is over ten years old and we wanted something that would allow easy conversion to digital format for sharing on line or on DVD. I look forward to learning more about this camcorder.

That said, I now find myself being forced to upgrade to Leopard OS if I want to use this camcorder as I intended. This essentially adds . to the cost.

He is not the most technologically-savvy guy--and it was not the product for him. The Sony Handycam was a lifesaver! It's easy to understand and easy to use. The Amazon shopping page neglects to mention that audio is not supported by this adaptor. When I checked the Cables 2 Go website, they indeed note this limitation. The video signal works fine for me from the MacBook Pro to a Sony Bravia HD television.

This small camera worked great out of the box. I set it up in our vacation cabin and it gives a nice view of the whole room. I connected it to an inexpensive video capture card and will be able to access it via via the internet (we have Hughes Satellite internet). I will be able to check the cabin from home to make sure that everything is alright. I may purchase more of these to put at the front door and other locations. For the money you can't beat this camera. I'm not sure how well it will work out for an outdoor location, but I am pleased with the indoor picture-it looks much like a picture that you see from security cameras, certainly not high resolution, but for money I don't think you will find a better bargain.

Just got this today. Hooked it up straight to my tv to test it. There was no color, and the picture was very jumpy, like a vcr will do when the tracking needs adjusting...only, as far as I can tell, there's no way to adjust it!. It came in an original, unopened package, but no instructions/troubleshooting guide was included. So I looked it up. Apparently this product used to be good, but the quality has since been downgraded drastically. It's supposably got night vision, but what used to be infrared sensors are now just fake pieces of plastic. Apparently the microphone has been removed also. Now I have a camera that is basically useless. Always read up on a product before you buy!

I just received this item, and I am livid. . . the picture on the website CLEARLY shows the camera with 6 ir LEDs. . . but when you get the product, there's just little black plastic nubs where the LEDs should be. I needed this as an IR camera. . . I guess I got swindled.

bought to spy on my self while I sleep. the wife said I was doing some crazy stuff in my sleep. so wanted a cheap way to watch my self sleep. a real camcorder is expensive. didnt need sound. picture reselution is ok. not high quality and a little grainy. but is a security cam so this is normal. very small and compact. could hide it well. doesnt do well in low light though. just hook up to vcr and have fun with it.

My neighborhood has had some nighttime vandalism, so I wanted to install a security camera. However, the neighborhood association forbids "architectural modifications", and you can't just slap a camera on the front of your home. This camera, with its compact size, seemed like the solution. I removed its base, leaving just a two-inch-long cylinder, and set it on a ledge outside a window with a putty cradle to hold it in place. I taped (should caulk) shut the little screw holes left by removal of the base. The cord from the power adapter is narrow and flexible, and the window shut over it easily. The camera is inconspicuous and has made it through many rains with no problem. See the customer image captioned, "Windowsill installation".

The camera's daylight picture is acceptable. You even have the option of running it off a 9V battery. I have detected no interference from my wireless router or cordless phones.

Now for the bad news. The camera's maximum infrared range is nine feet, so it is not designed for watching your yard at night. You can compensate for this with some strong lighting attached to a motion detector. However, at night the camera's infrared LEDs reflect off the camera's front window as a white, fuzzy halo that blurs the top of the picture. (Poor design, IMO.) Swann should have included a switch to optionally turn the LEDs off.

All in all, considering it as a learning experience, it was not a bad starter camera. However, I think that my next camera will simply be a long-range indoor camera looking through a window, aided by a motion-activated floodlight.

2/19/07 update: After a year of operation night vision remains poor, although it is somewhat improved by a motion-activated floodlight that I installed. I also attached a motion-sensing DVR, and it operates normally with this camera because I have put the receiver right up against the window next to the camera, so the picture is stable. (Again, see the customer image captioned, "Windowsill installation".)

12/30/10 update: The transmission from the camera to the receiver is the weak link, as pointed out by the first comment on this review. It gradually deteriorated over the years; it became sensitive to the position of the receiver, then even the window blind, and now it no longer records reliably. I wonder if the camera itself, or its antenna, deterioriated because of sitting in the weather. I liked this setup while it lasted because it gave better pictures than my WiLife setup.

Pro's:

+Easy to setup, only took 2 minutes.

+Compact size

Con's:

-Poor picture quality.

-Very poor sound.

-Interference from everything even after diabling the wireless network, unplugging the cordless phones, and shutting off the baby monitor, we still had a jumping lines and static.

If you live in a remote area without neighbors, have no microwave, cordless phone, or wireless network, then this is the camera for you; otherwise, search elsewhere.

I have 4 cameras and the receiver set to loop. The receiver cycles each camera in a loop for ~5 seconds, or you can manually select a single camera. Each camera has a 60 degree viewing angle. I put 3 of the cameras in a cluster with one pointing left, one center and one pointing right so I have a 180 degree view (The 4th to a different location). Otherwise, the 60 degree view is not very wide and a lot will be missed. The video is so-so. The audio is, well, worthless. But, for the cost vs a commercial high end camera system, it's about a 4th of the cost. The video is not really too bad in a well lighted area without interference and close to the receiver. The interference from a PC router (2.4GHz), a microwave (completely messes it up), a cordless phone running 2.4GHz or anything else seems to interfear with these cameras quite easily. Still again, for a budget security solution, it's not too bad. The warranty is only for 1 year. The camera features say it is for outdoor use. Hmmm,,, Well the cameras are not for direct sunlight (no hood), direct rain or snow (maybe ok for a drop or two). It needs to be under a cover. Oh, and the cameras will run on a provided 9 volt battery. Why did the manufacture waste the time? Sure it will run on the battery for 30 minutes. Com'on. The cameras come each with an AC adapter to provide power. The AC adapter has a line about 6 feet long. So think about how you will get power to the AC adpaters and then about 6 feet to reach the camera. The receiver is capable of seeing 4 cameras one-at-a-time. It is selectable for one-at-a-time (1,2,3 or 4) or it will loop through all four (all four whether there are one or four). The 5 second cycle seems like a long time from camera 1 to camera 4. That's a 15 second blackout. I went outside, walked to the truck and back in and the cameras never saw me because it musta been in the 15 second blackout period. The nighttime feature using the infrared is ok for a closeup. Sony makes an infrared day/night camera with 48 LEDs. It can see 100 feet in total darkness. But.... it cost 4-6 times as much. So, if you need something for security and something on a budget, these are not bad. I think they would make good indoor nanny cams (local viewing, no IP from the cams themselves). The indoor picture was not bad at all. Also, I am recording everyhing to a PC via a video PCI card. I have a WD external 320GB hard drive running through high speed USB for storage. The hard drive comes with a FAT32 filesystem. You'll need to reformat the hard drive to NTFS which takes about 5 hours depending upon your PC, the disk and the I/O. The recording video file (MPEG) is set to (Hmmm,, was it either standard play or long play? I don't rember.) eats up about 1.5 Giga Bytes per hour of disk space. So a 320GB hard drive will last about 9 days acording to the software b4 cycling. Also, I noticed many heavy duty intensive software programs like games, will cause the recording to stop. Probably due to the PC's inability to receive and process video, record the video and run the intensive app all at the same time (Pentium IV 2.8). One more note. If you plan on using the video for security and plan on using captured video for court, the cops say there are certain minimum video qualities you must meet.

I recently purchased this camera from a local Radio Shack and paid considerably more than Amazon has it listed for. I needed something fast as my Christmas lights had been vandalized twice that week. I got this camera because it had night vision and was small enough to be undetected. I hooked the camera up and ran it that night. Well needless to say they got me again and the camera missed the whole thing. There was so much interference you couldn't even see the picture through the lines. I called the company TWICE and got the same interference story. I even moved the receiver to several different rooms with different televisions and vcr's, changed the frequency and unplugged everything wireless in the house and still the same picture. Beware don't waste your money on this product. This one is going back to the store today. I would have given it less than one star, but one was the least you could give.

This is now the 4th OMB Bag I have bought, and I'm sure that I will buy more of them in the future. They are very well made, have a lot of compartments, are thoughtfully laid out, and very sturdy construction. The inside lining is all yellow, making it very easy to find things, even in the back of a dark set. I don't use the tripod straps on the top cover, as I prefer a very sturdy tripod to eliminate camera shake and the tripods I use are a little too heavy to carry up there. I have a professional Canon video camera, and I just drop it right in with the external monitor and wireless mic receiver still attached.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS25 16.1 MP Compact Digital Camera with 40x Intelligent Zoom (Black)

This is the 8th Panasonic Lumix camera I've purchased since my first in 2008. For some reason the ZS25 reminds me of my SZ7 looks-wise Panasonic Lumix SZ7 14.1 MP High Sensitivity MOS Digital Camera with 10x Optical Zoom (Black) -it's the rounded top to allow for the lens. Even though the SZ7 is over $150 cheaper than the ZS25, it takes much sharper photos. However, the SZ7 doesn't have full PASM manual controls and has only 10X optical zoom. They both start-up fast, faster than any other cameras I own/have previously owned, fast focusing (unless you are zooming out at the max), fast shutter response, fast recycling to take the next photo. (I always use Class 10 SDHC cards). If only the SZ7 had full manual controls, it would be THE perfect camera as the photos are much more sharp to my liking.

PROS:

-This is a fast camera for focusing, shutter response, etc.

-Leica lens LOVE Leica! Too bad it can't help the processor--or whatever causes the noise.

-You can optically zoom during the video and the zoom motor is quiet.

-Metal body (aluminum?) although it sounds like plastic when I tap on it, it has good build quality.

-CMOS sensor.

-Creative Controls: Like these, some never available in previous Panasonic cameras

-Made in Japan!

CONS: Or, what the heck is up, Panasonic?

- MAJOR Deal Breaker! It's almost like you have to set your ISO to 400 or less; it seems anything above ISO 400 starts looking out-of-focus but I think it's Panasonic's new way of smoothing out the noise.

-No separate battery charger, the battery charges inside the camera. This is starting to become the "new normal" with Panasonic cameras, other than the LX7. Quit being so cheap Panasonic, supply us with a separate battery charger!

- No RAW, for the RAW enthusiasts (I am not)

Panasonic photos are notorious for being "soft", these are more than soft and I'm not happy with this aspect AT ALL. Colors are good and natural. It's the sharpness which is "off" for me. And so the reason for my 3 star rating!!

The 1080 video is decent, but not as good as Sony cameras provide (cheaper ones, like this camera): Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX10V 18.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera with 16x Optical Zoom and 3.0-inch LCD (Silver) (2012 Model). With the ZS25, you can optically zoom during the video, the zoom motor is quiet and you can also take a photo while shooting a video (limited to 2 pics).

Battery life pretty much average. I got 200 photos and a couple videos before the low battery indicator was down to 1/3 left.

I've always loved the Quick Menu feature on Pannies and this one is in the correct location (lower right corner, sometimes they are on the left side, lower right, such as the LX7). What I don't like on this camera is they eliminated the playback switch, now it's a button. On older Panasonic cameras, I kept the Playback Switch on playback when I put the camera in the case, as that prevented accidental zoom of the lens if the camera accidentally was turned on inside the case. Can't do that with this camera.

Yarii's Conclusion: This is the first Panasonic I've rated 3 stars. I struggled and decided the ZS25 is not worthy of 4 stars. I'm disappointed; Panasonic should have done better. This camera replaced the ZS15. If you're happy with your ZS15 (or ZS20) there's no reason to upgrade to the ZS25; I wouldn't even call it an upgrade, it's more like a downgrade. If you don't care about having manual controls, check out the SZ7 (see link above) and save over $150. I think the ZS25 (and the ZS30) are both WAY overpriced, and I think Panasonic has run out of ideas and they came out with new models only because all the other camera manufacturers do for the CES.

Sad, but true I've owned numerous smaller Panasonic Lumix cameras. The smaller, pocket-size versions all work well and last about 2-3 years before they go bad. By that time the technology changes anyway, so it's not a big deal for me to think about replacing them with the latest version.

They have always been well-made, and delivered excellent quality pictures. Expected the same for this one.

Tried it for over a week, but was just not loving it. The build quality of the Lumix DMC-XS25 was not as good as it should be. They seemed to have replaced some parts with more plastic than in past models, and the quality of the pictures was not perfect either. Disappointing, as I have loved all my other Panasonic cameras and recommended them to others. I still like the smaller versions they offer, but this one did not deliver.

It felt like it was going to break, and the photos at 16 MP didn't seem as crisp and sharp as you'd think they should be.

Instead, ended up paying less than $100 more for the Sony DSC-HX20V, which seemed like more of an investment but looking back I cannot imagine NOT doing it. The Sony is head and shoulders above this Panasonic. The only downside in comparison is that it's not as fast as the Panasonic (i.e., when you are trying to take pictures in rapid succession the Panasonic is much faster, as the Sony evaluates each photo as it's taken and corrects it electronically).

I still like Panasonic, but for this specific camera it's just not up-to-par.

I just got this camera in time for the first nice weather weekend on the East Coast and we went to NYC with the family for a nice day in Central Park.

I purchases a ZS10 2 years ago and skipped last year's model to buy the ZS25 this year.

It is a very fast camera from start up time to auto focus time and shutter release. I can't even tell the difference in speed compared to my DSLR (5 yrs old)

Lumix is known for superior lens quality I read an article that they have a very close working relationship with Leica which speaks for itself. So I wasn't surprised at the image quality even at max zoom. BTW keep in mind this is a 24 mm to 480 mm lens meaning that 24 mm is a nice wide angle comes in handy for indoor and nice group shots.

The reason I sound so exciting is the video capability of this camera. We went to a school concert the other night and I took some incredible videos of our little girl on stage. Just make sure you switch the recoding mode to MP4 the default setting is on AVCHD the compression mode that no computer can read!

The videos I took were great not too noisy even though it was real dark.

I am very pleased and feel this is a great little camera that is compact but gives you lots of shooting options.

I think that this is great camera as long as you do not attempt to print a photo on letter size paper. Results will not be that good. The main problem that this system has is that it compresses JPEGs to 180 dpi. Thus, trying to do any re-touching is out of question. So, if you are planning to do 6x4 prints, email family and friends, or upload to the Facebook, this will do great. Focus is fast and I had no problems catching up with my 4 year old. However, I need something that can print on larger paper, and for 16MP, results were unacceptable. I have exchanged it for Nikon Coolpix 9500S

The 20x zoom and 16MP sensor combined with the compact size makes this a great pocket or travel camera, particularly when I don't want to take my larger interchangeable lens camera with me.

The 10fps burst mode makes shooting my son's sports easy and yields great results, and I like that I can take full HD Video with the same device.

I've experimented with the creative controls, and the modes help me take more creative/artistic photos and never need to edit them on my PC.

Definitely worth a look!

Although one of the original cameras was faulty, the vendor quickly replaced it when the bad unit was returned. After installing them and getting assistance from their technical support, we were up and running with no problems.

I needed the help of their IT service to get these configured to connect to my WiFi, but they work well. they take photos when the motion detector is tripped and emails them to you. That is all I use them for. I wish they could handle outdoor service, but they are indoor only cameras. if anyone breaks into the house, it takes 5 pictures of them (per camera) and emails the photos to you (up to 5 email addresses).

So if a burglar breaks in, odds are he will get identified and arrested shortly afterwards. For the money, everyone should have a couple of these. You can also remote dial in to the cameras, but I find it is not worth the hassle, since the subnet mask or whatever keeps changing, so the last IP address doesn't seem to work reliably. I am sure some smarter people know how to fix this, but I am happy with just the email photo feature. If you have a messy house like me, and don't put the cameras in the obvious places, the bad guy will likely never even find the camera to destroy it, and get dozens of photos taken of himself.

The Camera's work great and can interface with an existing alarm system. I bought it for the motion activation capability, but it fails short. It will only take 5 pictures, one per second. I would prefer a video clip for about a 1 minute (preferably user defined) duration upon activation.

Nikon D600 Digital SLR Camera & 24-85mm VR AF-S Zoom Lens with Nikon 70-300mm VR AF-S Lens + 32

I've been very pleased with the D600 along with the 24-85mm and 70-300mm lenses in this kit. For the most part, the other stuff in the kit is junk, particularly the EN-EL15 battery made not by Nikon, but is "Power2000" brand. If they had sent a rock it would have been just a useful as the battery holds no charge. The other things are pretty low-end stuff that seems more appropriate to a $50 camera than a $2000 D600. Having said that, the bag is made by Nikon and is not too bad, but would be much more useful if it were a bit bigger. The included 32GB flash card is class 10, but not UHS, so you'll likely purchase a Sandisk instead of using this one. The extra "kit" stuff fortunately didn't add much to the cost, so I'm not too bothered by it.

The camera was serial number 3036xxxx and appears to have a bit of the "dust/oil" issue though after about 300 pictures it isn't too bad. The 24-85mm lens focuses nicely as is, but the 70-300mm lens required a -12 "fine tune" to move it's back-focus forward. The lenses are sharp and cover a pretty broad range, so if you don't need PRO-level lenses, these may be all you need. I'm quite happy with the whole deal.

I should also add that Cameta got the order out as quickly as I could have hoped for.

I highly recommend this camera. It is easy to use, and is great quality. I've used it on a variety of things. Portraits, plays, sports, etc. with my old camrea a got a lot of noise with highter ISO, this one does exceptionally well!

This is the best deal found on web, it has everything as described, the canon takes great pictures and is easy to use, i take it with me everywhere, and the spare battery last more time than the original, love to shoot by viewfinder instead fo using directview, manual focusing with the telephoto zoom lens is better. But if your looking to buy it for wildlife shooting or kids, is better to buy the kit that comes with the 55-250 mm zoons len, it has image stabilization system and works better when the object is quite far away from you or moving, if you buy this kit with the 75-300mm lens will have to program the continuous shooting to avoiding camera shake and blurry pictures. So far this is the best deal found for the price and items...

Very pleased with my Canon T3 camera. It came to me just as described. Takes beautiful, clear pictures. Have taken pictures in the sunshine, low light, action pictures and they have all turned out great. Still learning how to use the different features but am very pleased with the camera.
