Sony HDR-XR100 80 GB HDD High Definition Camcorder (Silver)

I have been using a previous generation Sony HDR-SR7 high def 60GB hard drive camcorder and been overall happy with that model.

I then waited patiently for Sony's new "XR" series of camcorders and am very pleased with the Sony HDR-XR100. This newer camcorder is the lowest end model of the four new XR series models, which include the HDR-XR100, XR200, XR500, and XR520.

SONY HDR-XR100 PROS:

1. Feels significantly smaller than the previous generation Sony SR models. The dimensions are 2 3/4 x 2 3/4 x 5 1/8 inch (69 x 68 x 129mm). The numbers may seem only slightly smaller than the previous generation SR models, but in the hand it feels noticably smaller.

2. This camera without battery weighs 11oz (330g) or with battery 14.5oz (410g). The numbers again may seem like only a small difference with the older SR series, but in the hand it feels significantly lighter.

3. Extraordinary convenience of having an 80GB hard drive versus using tape. Just as with the SR series, the use of a hard drive continues to be amazing. I cannot imagine ever going back to using tape. One simply uses the camcorder and everything is instantly saved on its hard drive. Whenever one is ready to export their video files, you just connect it with a USB cable and the computer will automatically download your video files. 80GB allows for 9 hours and 40 minutes of recording at the highest "FH" mode. At the lowest quality mode LP, 80GB will allow for 33 hours and 30 minutes of recording time.

4. Wonderfully easy to use LCD touch screen with intuitive menu options. Even without reading the manual, one can quickly understand how to use their camcorder.

5. Nice indexing of your recorded videos that allow for easy selection of playback through the camcorder LCD. Faces can also be indexed so that you may select your videos by a person's face in an index.

6. Very detailed image quality of the video

7. Allows for capturing still photos at 4.0 megapixels. There also appears to be a "smile shutter" feature that allows the camera to detect when your subject smiles, and then capture a photo. I have not tried that feature yet.

8. Supports same rechargeable lithium batteries used in previous generation Sony SR series, e.g. model no. NP-FH60 or NP-FH70.

9. Can also record on Memory Stick PRO Duo instead of hard drive

WHAT IS NOT AVAILABLE ON THE XR100 (BUT AVAILABLE ON XR200):

1. GPS

2. Flash for photography

3. Larger 120GB hard drive

4. Active interface shoe to power accessories that can mount on top of camera

5. 15x optical zoom (the XR100 has less at 10x optical zoom)

SONY HDR-XR100 CONS:

1. The video has a jittery quality to it when the camcorder is not on a tripod. The more drastically you move the camcorder during recording, the greater the effect. It seems less pronounced when on a tripod, but this jittery quality still remains. It is for this reason that I suspect the jittery quality is not entirely related to the image stabilization feature.

2. There is no optical viewfinder on the XR-100. I do have one on my older SR7.

3. There is no docking station, which I did have on my older SR7. A docking station made it even more convenient to upload videos than having to fiddle with a USB cable.

4. Noisy low-light video quality is still present. I cannot detect any improvement over my older SR7 for low-light video as it remains quite noisy. Please note that the higher end Sony HDR-XR500 and XR520 have some type of special "backlit CMOS" sensor that Sony reports has improved low-light with low noise capability.

5. As is usual for Sony, you will have to use Sony's proprietary Memory Stick PRO Duo format if you want to record onto flash memory instead of the hard drive.

6. My previous generation Sony HDR-SR7 had the lens cover open automatically, but in my XR100, I have to manually flip a small lever near the lens to open it.

CONCLUSION:

Overall I'm very happy with the Sony HDR-XR100 because it is significantly smaller and lighter than the previous generation HDR-SR7 I own, with all of the great convenience that comes from using a built-in hard drive coupled with a wonderfully easy touchscreen LCD. I did not think there were enough differences for me to purchase the more expensive XR200, but you may want to consider the even more expensive XR500 for its possibly improved low-light video capability with the "backlit CMOS" sensor technology that only the Sony HDR-XR500 and XR520 have.

ADDENDUM 5/24/2010:

I recently bought a Canon HF-S100 camcorder, which is considerably more expensive than this Sony, but I nevertheless needed to amend my review of the Sony XR100. I initially thought the Canon HF-S100 had less of a jittery quality, but after more use realized that both the Sony HDR-XR100 and the more expensive Canon HF-S100 suffer from a jittery quality. I have not yet tried to reduce the picture quality of the recording to see if that will smooth the abrupt transitions between frames. I reduced the rating from a 5/5 for the Sony to a 4/5, but am not certain if there are any prosumer high-definition cameras that can produce a smooth, jittery-free image.

When I purchased an HD camcorder I expected an HD quality picture. Not the case with this camcorder in normal evening indoor lighting the video is extremely noisy, it was so bad that I burned a disc and took it to the Sony Style store to compare -I must have received a defective unit? Nope, it seems to be a common problem with this model....the rep in the Sony Style store even admitted that the video quality was really bad. The white balance was also a bit off. The other problem is that the picture is jittery even with the "Steady Shot" turned on and trying to hold the camera as steady as possible. It performed OK in brighter lighting but you shouldn't have to use an old fashioned video floodlight to get a decent indoor image!!!

Back it went for a refund. .If you're interested in purchasing this model check it out in a store first and take it into the lower light home theater room and shoot a sample video before you buy!

The high definition video quality in daylight is excellent. That being said, this camcorder has some serious drawbacks:

1. The PMB (Picture Motion Browser) software does not work on Windows Vista 64-Bit

2. The image stabilization is terrible (it will literally give you motion sickness watching video if you walk with this camera).

3. The low-light video quality is very poor.

4. There is no view finder.

If you are looking for a camera that shoots great HD outside, then you have found the camera. The quality of shooting outdoors is very good. But when you go indoors and you do not have a lot of light coming in from the windows then the camera will start picking up noise. What I did is pick up a headband flash light and took the band around the camera to attach the light. Adding that extra light has help. You can change some gain and aperture settings. But it isn't enough like pro camera can do. I do love the small size of the camera.

This is certainly a good buy for the price and the quality. Since every item is not perfect, even this has few drawbacks. Its doing ok in low light as compared to others, but in day light quality is the best. Creating a HD DVD is easy but to convert to a regualar DVD is realy pain. It takes for ever almost 4 hours for writing a regular DVD. The quality of conversion is bad. The other one When viewed connecting directly to TV, you get the best results. Regarding zoom, its just 10X optical which limits the coverage range. Well I bought this to for personnel home recording, so I scarificed range to quality.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS25 camera is an excellent point and shoot camera. It delivers on what it promises. The Intelligent Auto feature works really well in a range of shooting environments. One button at the top of the camera toggles between the iA function and last camera setting. Face detection and auto focus (AF) tracking on moving objects are quite cool features and useful features, especially when you are trying to get a good snap of your kids or pets. The camera works smoothly on MacOS X with iPhoto (although the boxed PHOTOfunSTUDIO software only works on a PC but you don't need or want it if you have a Mac). The photo quality is excellent. It's has a 3X optical zoom, and that's all I really need (it also has a digital zoom). The backlit display gives you a realistic preview of what you're capturing I don't miss a viewfinder even outdoors in bright light. Burst shooting with and without flash works well, although the photo res is reduced in this mode. The video recording is better than nearly all point and shoots in the price range (although it is not as great of the Lumix LX3 at approximately twice the list price of DMC-FS25) allowing for 16:9 wide-screen video recording: WVGA (848 x 480) at 30 frames per second. It also takes standard 4:3 (640 x 480) video. For charging you need to take the battery out of the camera, but the charger is quite small and it is compatible with worldwide 110-240V power, although you still need to bring a plug adapter. I've had my camera for several weeks (used it daily for photos and video) and I have only had to charged once after the initial charge up. The battery door looks delicate but it should be fine with normal use. In general the build quality is high, the black brush look is very cool, and the camera feels great to hold. It is much easier to slip into your pocket than the Lumix-TZ5. My DMC-FS25 outperforms my previous Sony Cybershot DSC P200 . The SD memory card is great. I have a 8GB SD card. You can get a lot more GB storage for less $ than with Sony's memory sticks.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS25 is great camera! The advanced features are definitely worth the extra dollars from the Lumix DMC-FS15 or DMC-FS7 models.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FS25 is a great camera for the money! Similar cameras with the same megapixels, features, and zoom ran much more when I was looking to buy a new camera. It feels durable in your hands, looks classy, and is a nice size; not too small but small enough to fit in my husband's pants pocket. We mainly use this camera for get-togethers with friends and family and vacations. Actually, the day we got this camera in the mail we left for a vacation to Florida. It took great pictures on the beach, of sunsets, and on a boat tour at night. It has a very nice zoom for a point-and-shoot camera and all of our pictures from our vacation turned out great! We were getting compliments on it our entire trip! We previously had a FujiFilm J10 and this camera is SO much better. It was easy to see the screen even in bright sunlight on the beach. The shutter speed is good (much better than the Fuji was). I had no problems taking pictures of my fast-moving niece. The video feature is good as well, don't buy the camera for this feature, but for short clips it gets the job done with audio and no delays. I have not read the manual that comes with the camera yet but flipping through it I found many more features that are not mentioned in the product description that looked neat. The software that came with the camera, PhotoFunStudio is easy to use and integrates well with a PC. I was able to still save all of the photos in MyPictures but access them through the Panasonic software. The battery life is great as well, it was charged right before our trip two weeks ago and has not been charged yet and we have taken about 300 photos in those two weeks!

I would recommend this camera to people who want a quality camera that takes great pictures of everyday moments, special occasions, and vacations. It takes excellent pictures; did not miss a moment of our vacation and worked well when snapping pictures of my toddler niece.

Bought one of these cameras for myself. I took it on vacation and once I saw the ease of use and the resulting photos, I was so impressed that I bought two more as Christmas gifts for my son and daughter. They are also very impressed with their new cameras.

The pictures are very crisp (Leica lens) and the "Intelligent Auto" adjusts the camera exposure settings to produce a better photo than all but the most serious photographer could have done. The menus and controls could be a bit easier to use, but most of the time you will just press the "IA" (Intelligent Auto) button right there on top. The camera is just the right size, compact and very thin. Any smaller would be hard to hold properly.

The lens also provides a very usable zoom range. In my old 35mm days, I shot most pictures with lenses between 28 & 110mm. This camera gives you a zoom that just covers that range. If you want a long telephoto lens, or 15/1 zoom, look elsewhere.

Anyone looking for a small compact snapshot camera, that takes great photos with a minimum input from the user, should be very happy with one of these.

I bought this camera to be something I could pop into my pocket so I didn't have to lug around my DSLR. The photos are decent enough but my biggest gripe is the build quality (and maybe the slow focus). I bought this back in September and by the end of October and about maybe 1000 images, the lens would not retract back into the camera after shooting. I sent it back to Amazon and got a replacement. Here it is February and I just sent that one back to Panasonic. Now the lens will not always extend when the camera is turned on and I get a message to turn the camera off, then on again. When the lens does this I have to turn the camera off and on 3 or 4 times before I can shoot. In addition to this a few weeks ago I noticed an attached ring that surrounds the lens started to detach from the camera. Every time I put the camera in my pocket this became more and more detached to the point I had to remove it since it was barely hanging on.

My overall impression of this camera is that it's just not made very well. My old small Canon that was handed down to someone else is a tank compared to this. I took the Canon on the Appalachian trail in all kinds of weather. I really don't know if I could ever trust this Lumix for that kind of trip.

I love this camera! It's actually the second one I bought...had its predecessor for a couple years, then gave that one to my spouse and got this new one for myself. The viewer-LCD is huge and it takes great photos and video with sound. Only complaints: Not great getting video in darker conditions (even with increased exposure) and you can't zoom once you start a video. I'd recommend taking the time to go through the User's Guide to get a handle on all the features--many more than I'll ever use.

In spite of the couple video shortcomings, I love it and highly recommend it if you want a fairly easy-to-use camera that's small and fun.

I just received my new Olympus W-10 Digital Voice Recorder and I'm completely happy with it. It's light weight, including batteries. The size is ok, the quality of the recordings is good as long as you use HQ (High Quality). Like almost any other voice recorder, LP (Long Playback) is useless because of the poor quality, unless you use it for recording your own voice in front of the microphone.

Using the Recorder is so simple that I only use the manual for reference.

The software included is amazing. It was so easy to install and to download wave and image files from the voice recorder to the computer, that I couldn't belive it. I downloaded 4 pictures in less than five seconds!! You can also upload voice files from your computer to the Recorder.

The pictures are not as good as any digital camera, however taking pictures is not it's main function so I think the quality of the pictures is good enough. It doesn't have a flash so you can't take pictures without enough light, however it has an indicator that warns you if the Recorder can take the picture or not.

It also has an alarm associated with any voice record (maximum 5 records) so you can set the alarm to remember a special event and the recording associated can be played after the alarm. The only problem with this alarm is that it is not loud enough.

The best of all is that this product includes everything; batteries, carrying case, strap, USB cable, earphones and software so you don't need to buy anything else.

Pros: stylish, tiny, lightweight, good audio capacity, voice activated recording

I'd hoped that this device would connect as a USB hard drive but it requires pc-based software to download the images. The software is pretty good...I especially like the auto-download-and-delete feature which make connectivity amazingly quick as plugging in the cable switches the w-10 into PC connectivity mode, launch the w-10 software, download the images/audio clips, and delete the images off the w-10.

The camera doesn't have a flash so indoor shots are grainy (outdoor shots are a little better but not quite as good as my first olympus digital camera, which also took 640x480 images). One nice thing is that the unit doesn't have any distinct modes to get into the way...you can switch between audio and image capture seamlessly. One caveat here is that when taking a picture, you need to depress the shutter to the first detent and wait for about a second...once it verifies there's adequate space it gives you a green light, then you can press to the 2nd detent to take the shot.

Summary:

A stylish little audio recorder with quick PC connectivity and limited video snapshot support. Don't buy this unit if you want a true digital camera as the results are not very sharp.

I must admit this was the first voice recoder I had ever purchased and with the features and price I thought I could not have found a better bargain. What I got was a tiny well designed pseudofunctional device. I read a few reviews but figured when the people had said the camera wasn't too bad was an understatement, but then again I had high expectations (don't make this mistake). The pictures even at a short distance showed up relatively fuzzy. In high quality mode the W-10 reproduced recordings exceptionally well, however unless you don't leave your computer or a pc to continually download the files you only get about 47 minutes worth, the reason I got the thing in the first place was so I could record my professors whose lectures were consecutive, making it impossible to use that mode. The Standard mode gives fair sound reproduction with a slight hiss, overall its bearable, howeveryou only are allowed 68 minutes not enough time to complete one lecture for my T,R classes (75 minutes for non college readers). Low quality mode, I'll just say I used it once and that was enough of that setting. Also the recoder saves files from modes lesser than high in a different wave level so you can't put them on cds unless you change the format which i dont have time to figure out. In conclusion, if you don't require a lengthy recording then this is a pretty good buy, I have to also admit that just because I complain of the quality of the pictures the camera option would be nice on rare occasions, also the pc interface is a no-brainer. Hope this helps someone looking for a something better not to be unhappy with their purchase!

This is an incredible value for a Digital Voice Recorder. It has 1hr. of recording capacity at the highest resolution setting. Over 10 hours of battery life. Voice Activated. Konica Minolta Dimage Z2 4MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Zoom

I've had my Z2 for about a week and I am very impressed with it. This is my fifth digital still camera (the last was a Sony DSC-S75). Other reviewers have complained of poor image quality and noisy zooming during videos. It almost seems as if they are talking about a different camera. My Z2 has produced very sharp and colorful images (flesh tones are a bit oversaturated even at the "natural" color setting) and the zoom is COMPLETELY silent in the videos I've taken. One reviewer said the videos cannot be edited, but that is not true. The camera comes with Arcsoft software to do some crude editing on the Quicktime (*.mov) files, but it also allows you to save the video in other formats such as MPEG, AVI, and WMV. In those other formats the Windows XP Windows Movie Maker will do additional editing. I recommend you use the AVI version since it seems to introduce the fewest compression artifacts. But you have to download the camera's firmware update (version 1.02, posted 04/23/04) at in order to get the sound to transfer along with the video. When you are at the site you have to navigate to the Z2 page and then select "software." Another virtue I've discovered -the camera is efficient in its use of energy.

The deficiencies I've found have to do mainly with downloading images and dealing with them once they are in my computer. The Windows XP download wizard cannot rotate images that were taken in vertical format (as it was able to do with my Sony) unless I first rotate the image in the camera's playback display. Images come in as JPEGS, with perhaps a bit more compression than I would like in the "fine" mode the file sizes for these 4-megapixel photos are about the same as they were with my 3-megapixel Sony. When I edit an image and then try to save it again as a jpeg, my Ulead PhotoImpact 6.0 software cannot compress the image as much as I may need. And my Printmaster 7.0 cannot see the image, though other JPEGS come in just fine. The workaround that I use is to save the Minolta's image as a Bitmap, close the bitmap file, then reopen it, and then save it as a JPEG at the desired level of compression -and then Printmaster can see it. Perhaps Minolta has done something with the EXIF data that these software applications cannot deal with.

With a camera that generates such widely differing reviews it might be a good idea to buy it where you can return it easily. I got mine at WalMart (Circuit City was out of them) for something like $50 more than the Amazon price, just so I could bring it back quickly. But I'm keeping mine.

Dimage Z2 feels good in your hands. The grip handle has well spaced and placed buttons. The neat LCD screen/viewfinder switcher option is very handy. The LCD screen does not fold out for odd-angle viewing. This camera will not fit into a pocket, but is surprisingly light.

The controls are pretty intuitive, but also extensive. They're a lot easier to understand than most VCR's. Of course, this might be faint praise...

Pictures look fine on my 17 inch laptop screen. Since I do not print out my pictures much, 4MP is more than enough. At half the price of the digital Rebel (and the like), I can live with half the megapixels of digital SLR's. The 16meg SD card that it comes with is completely inadequate. My 512 SD card might seem like overkill, unless you want to film movies. Then, the 512 seems just adequate.

The movie-mode is the best I've seen on a camera. If you pick your spots carefully, you can film a wedding in both still and movie modes, and be pleased by both results. However, the motor on the lense is very loud when employed during filming, and will be noticably picked up. In other words, DON'T zoom while filming. The 10X optical lense will make you forget the digital zoom. If you must go for the digital gusto, unless you've got nerves of steel and hands of granite, use a monopod. Z2's focus lock option allows you to properly compose your picture with your subject off center. The focus is fast (if not quiet) and pretty responsive. The flash is powerful (red-eye reduction), and there is a hot-shoe for a larger flash unit.

The 2 AA battery (with AC power option) allows a lot of flexibility. An optional battery unit is available that pretty much provides enough juice to run a small Irish village (excluding the pub).

If you can accept that it is what it is (a consumer camera with lots of neat features in a well-thought-out package), then Z2 deserves its 5 stars.

I've had this camera for a little over a month and so far, I love it. It's got the full-auto (point-and-shoot) mode for the casual photographer/beginner, but it also has a variety of manual modes and advanced features like aperture priority, shutter priority, program mode, and full manual, as well as manual white balance for those interested in learning the art of (digital) photography.

The two built in macro modes (close and *really* close) allow for excellent close-up shots. Despite having almost no experience in photography beyond point-and-shoot cameras, I was taking pretty good macro shots my first day with it (at least that's what mom said ;). The 10x zoom is great for the long shots. The 16MB SD card is useless (pick up at least 256MB). I still carry the 16 for a spare, but at the highest image resolution, I doubt I could fit 10 pictures on it.

Do yourself a favor and buy the lens adapter ring and a UV filter for the camera. The UV filter can be had pretty cheap, won't affect picture quality, and will keep your built-in lens safe from scratches, dirt, and UV rays (evidently pretty damaging to camera equipment). And having the adapter, you'll be able to attach other filters as your need/skill grow. Oh, and get a couple of sets of rechargeable NIMH batteries too. They'll save you a lot of money. I briefly looked into the Konika-Minolta LI battery pack that's made for the camera, but being more than half the price of the camera, decided it was more expensive than I needed. At least for now.

So far, my only complaints are: the battery cover door seems pretty flimsy. I'd like to see something more substantial. And, I'm not sure the idea of the mechanical mirror used to select the view through the eyepiece or on the display screen is wise. It just seems like more mechanical parts to fail in the future. Also, the use of the eyepiece won't prolong battery life as it would in most digital cameras.

So, it's few faults aside, I give the KM Z2 a solid 5 star rating.

I've been holding off buying a digital camera as I love my Olympus SLR camera but, whilst looking around my local camera store in February, I was introduced to the Z1 and was told that I should probably wait as new cameras were coming out soon. Well, the Z2 came out and I pre-ordered on the strength of what I'd seen from the Z1.

The Z2 has surpassed my expectations I have some very good quality print outs of my first few images. I even managed to get an excellent close up shot first time that I'd previously wasted at least 2 films trying to get on my regular SLR. Focus is fast and accurate and the camera is light and very comfortable to hold. Definitely recommended.

This is the third digital camera I've gotten, to replace an aging 1 Megapixel Sony Mavica with a 16X optical zoom. I am VERY pleased with the results, having taken 1800+ pictures in the past three months with only a few minor glitches.

The pros:

This is the first digital camera I've used that can take a sunset picture equal to any film camera I've ever used.

Very speedy

Awesome zoom.

Good battery lifespan (Using Duracell Rechargable ACCU batteries w/ 1 hour recharger)

Fairly light

The Cons:

The camera has difficulties focusing if you use the zoom out on the water (if you go on a whale watch, don't use the zoom, or ignore the focus warnings whales move much faster than you think!)

A tendency to focus in on the 'wrong' things like a background when you're trying to capture a small thing (such as a bird) in the foreground.

-The battery door is awkward to use especially if you're rushing to change out batteries. Once the batteries are in place and the door is put back, it is solid. The best solution of course is to start out with fresh batteries.

Tips

-I have found that most of the 'jiggle' problems reported go away if you use the eyepiece of course the further the zoom goes out, the harder it is to keep stable. The digital zoom portion of it, like most digital cameras, is not very good, so try not to use it unless there is no other option.

I have gotten a 256 MB SD card for this it can hold 200 images, although if you're taking pictures along the seashore, you can get 300 images.

Keep in mind that this is good for outdoors indoors, a smaller camera with a wide-angle lens does better (I still tote my 2MP Canon Powershot A40 around when I'm our on a 'major' photo shoot to get the wider shots)

If you're looking for a camera with a great zoom I would have to say this is one of the best currently on the market at an affordable price.

I have had this camera for about two weeks and I must say I'm very impressed. After three plus years of owning my bulky, chunky Panasonic Lumix 3megapixel Camera I decided to try the Samsung Sleek and Sexy Lifestyle (L-series) Digital Camera. Correct me if I'm wrong but for you cost conscious consumers out there, this camera is almost identical to the NV11, the differences are: 10megapixel instead of 7 (only important if you are planning on printing Poster Size pictures), the Schneider Lens in the NV is "world renowned" but my L73 takes breath taking pictures as well, and finally the NV11 has a flip up Flash instead of a front built-in flash like the L73 and I like the flash being built in instead of flip open because having to manually flip open the flash seems like a bad design choice. The MAJOR difference between the NV11 and the L73 is the price the NV11 costs $250 and the L73 is $150

Picture Quality/Features: As stated above, I've gotten nothing but fantastic pictures out of this camera. The Auto feature does give average picture quality indoors, and outdoors you will want to play with features, but that's the beauty of this camera, adjusting a setting and taking a test shot is as easy as sliding your finger over a touch sensitive button and changing lighting settings, exposure, scene variables like motion shots, dark shots, super close-up macro shots, there's tons of easy features. The best is when you're first getting used to the camera and the features, it's defaulted to telling you what each little picture means, so you don't have to guess what a stick figure stands for in the options. Night shots are great I just bought a 53" tripod on Amazon and gone around the lakes to take amazing shots, it reminds me of my old SLR back in high school and that amazed me. So taking great pictures is easy to do right out of the box, but you'll fall in love with the features and tweaking them so you get the absolute best result you wanted.

Battery Life: The lithium Ion battery was new to me, I'm used to using two AA batteries about every time I go out (talk about wasting money) but the this little battery has kept a full charge after one week of light use. Since initially messing with features and waiting for my tri-pod to arrive in the mail I've used the camera about 6 or 7 times and the battery is still at it's full three bars. **make sure with any lithium ion battery operated device, that you drain the battery completely when you first get it and then charge it the maximum number of hours it states in the manual. To avoid over charging, don't charge it again until that full charge is once again depleted. This will give you maximum battery power from then on** I considered getting a backup battery but I think I'll wait because this battery lasts long enough for my needs. If you are planning on taking lots of pictures or going on vacation where you can't access a Powered USB connection or AC connection I'd recommend an extra battery. It's a SLB-0837 3.7v lithium Ion battery you can buy them online for about $10-$15.

Cost-Benefit: This camera was a great purchase, Circuit City doesn't carry them in their store (most likely because it's so similar to the NV10 and NV11 that it'd hurt the sale on the more expensive models) but you can buy it on their website and shipping is fast. All together I bought the camera($153+$4 shipping), slim carrying case($10), 2 Year Protection Plus Plan Damage Protection ($48), Laminate Screen Protector ($5) and 53" aluminum tri-pod($15+$3 shipping) so all together I spent about $238 for a camera that's protected for years to come and I couldn't be happier, it's slim enough to fit in my backpack and durable enough to withstand a day in the life of a college student, and then it also takes great pictures and with a little messing around you can get any situation shot perfectly.

The DEAL BREAKER for me was the Video Capturing Abilities! Normal Digital Cameras take low resolution video, but this Camera takes near DVD quality Video. The resolution is actually higher than a regular DVD. It's 800x592 and it's captured in AVI format. ALSO, you can pause the recording instead of starting a new video it resumes recording from where you paused! I plugged it into my 40" LCD and of course it was nothing High Def but it sure wasn't bad coming from a little Slim Camera.

I sort of fell into this camera, by accident. I was looking at the 7.2 MP Digicams in Walmart, and wrote down what I thought was the correct model number. Looking them up on Amazon, I found them for a slightly higher price, but with the addition of a free 2 gig card. I ordered one that night.

What I really found was the better L73, and not your standard Digicam. My only experience with digital cameras was a crappy DXG camera, and a four year old Kodak.

From going from a dated Kodak, to a state of the art Samsung wasn't really all that big of a stretch. I read the book, and spent a couple hours playing with it, and was taking quality pictures with it right away.

If I could have given the l73 camera six stars, I would have. It takes great pictures and good video also. It has everything a novice could want in a camera, and much more.

There were a few things the book didn't cover very well, but were easily looked up on the internet.

To the guy who said he didn't get his memory card. You did know, you were supposed to add it to your shopping cart, right?

I just bought this camera today, July 5 2007, from a local Superwalmart. I'm fourteen and my birthday was just a few weeks ago, so i'm not really a big shopper. This is my second Samsung camera in just over a year. Last year, I got the Samsung Digimax S500 for my birthday, and I absolutley loved it. After about 9 months, the design got kind of old, and it had been through some bad times. I currently own the new Samsung L73, and I love it. Of course, the 2.5" LCD screen is large, but now pretty basic for camera's. But i'm not complaining. However, because of the large picture size, and a smaller screen, the pictures look some-what low quality. HOWEVER! The pictures on the computer are amazing! It's love. The shutter delay on Auto mode is pretty slow, because it is trying to focus it so you can have the best quality pictures. However, the ASR mode, (Anti Shake Reduction) takes crisp, clean pictures. I was literally shaking the camera half to death, and when i looked at the picture, you wouldn't have known if i was holding it still or not. I love this camera. Also, the rechargeable batery compared to the older models of Samsung camera's is a pig plus! Thank you samsung for a well built camera!

I bought this camera to replace my bulky old 3.2 mp fuji camera. The pros are small compact size, fits in my pocket without being uncomfortable,large display screen,great battery that lasts a long time and quickly recharges,I love the touch pads that allow you to quickly navigate through most functions.The cons are low quality video,but at this price you can't expect HD Quality.All in all this is a great point and shoot if you don't want to spend $200 plus for the sony.

My only point of comparison are Canon cameras just so you know where I am coming from. I was trying to decide between this or the Canon SD1000. Finally, I decided on this because of cost. After using this camera for about 2 weeks, I should have bought the Canon. The handling of the camera is decent but there are just too many buttons and cheap, unnecessary features. The smart touch works well but I prefer the old wheel found on most cameras.

Overall:

Pros:

-many features for the price. 7MP

-looks great and well built

-awesome high resolution video mode

-the viewing screen is bright and high res

CONS:

-the shutter lag is just horrible

-larger than the canon.

-too many buttons. interface is not simple.

Nikon COOLPIX S100 16 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom NIKKOR ED Glass Lens and 3.5-Inch

I've had this camera for a few months now, and so far it's performed very well. The lack of buttons and the sweet touch screen makes for an elegant package. I haven't tested most of it's capabilities, however.

BUT, this camera inexplicably has no Auto-off function. The sliding cover acts as a switch, and if you accidentally leave it open it enters a standby mode, but then DOESN'T SHUT OFF! It slowly drains the battery completely. I keep it in a case and didn't notice I had left it open, only to twice find a dead battery when I really needed a camera. And you can't pop in a spare. I think every digital camera I've owned had this feature. It simply doesn't make sense to leave it off a relatively expensive camera, especially since it's so easy to leave it open unintentionally.

And on the subject of that sliding cover/switch, using it creates several parallel scratches on the front of the camerawhich takes away some of the elegance I mentioned. Not a real problem, but I still wonder why Nikon created a system destined to deface itself.

After a lot of research, and a top recommendation from Consumer Reports, I purchased this camera for my wife. Bottom line: I do not recommend this cameras.

It had all the features I was looking for: good optical quality, thin and compact, lightweight, fast start-up time and recovery, a fixed lens (doesn't protrude out) with a good optical zoom, and it even came in red. For these qualities, it is successful.

Where it is not successful is giving a decent picture. It exudes several poor behaviors:

-Inconsistant focus. 3 out 5 are way out of focus (optical focus, not image blur) and 1 out of 5 is actually sharp.

-This camera has a very slow shutter speed in low light (lots of streaking). It must have a poor image stabilizer, too.

-The flash is very inaccurate and inconsistent. No two shots are the same, even if taken right after each other.

-Most shots are too bright. I must use exposure compensation always, which often resets back to 0.

-The video is often very blurry and the focus stays fixed. One must stop and start the video to get it to refocus.

-The slide to turn it on slides out in my wifes purse and turns on, depleting the battery.

-The lens is in a poor location; my wife keeps covering up the lens with her finger.

-Low light pictures are almost unusable.

-The panoramic mode does not process properly so there is lots of ghosting/double imagery.

-Very grainy in dark areas.

-The camera remains on and the battery will go dead if the USB cable is plugged into the camera but removed from a computer after downloading pictures.

-The charger form factor takes up too much space on a power plug.

-The color balance is either way too warm or way too cold. It doesn't seem to be able to adapt to shade properly.

-The OLED touchscreen easily scratches.

-Touching menu buttons is often read as wanting to take a picture, so it does. Lots of deletes.

-Seems to be losing videos.

-I don't get "thumbnails" of the pictures in Windows 7 x64 folders.

I thought Nikon made good cameras but not so on this model. I have a Kodak 3 MP camera from 2002 that consistently yields better pictures than this camera. I just went back and reviewed a bunch of pictures from a staycation and found very few keepers. I really recommend you avoid this camera so I am downgrading to a single star.

Very nice camera except for the ability to touch the OLED screen to trigger the shutter. I found myself taking many unintentional pictures.

I found there was an option to change the touch to something other that the shutter. I changed it and things are much better.

Someone stated that the camera is bound to deface itself over time because of how the slide functions. True. But if you wipe the camera with a micro fiber cloth (which you should have anyway for the OLED screen) it will slow the process. Now with that said, buy it. I promise you this is the best point and shoot on the market for the money. Also it helps if you know how "work" a camera, I.e, know what changing the iso,shutter speed actually do and things of that nature. And quick tip for the Newbie noobs, FLASH IS NOT YOUR BEST FRIEND. Learn when the flash is NEEDED. And with this camera.....well I've used the flas 3 time literaly.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

Prospective buyers of a macro lens for a Canon EOS system have a great first choice in this 100mm Macro. The extra length over a 50mm macro gives much better working distance (space between lens and subject) in the field, and EOS-compatible lenses by other manufacturers match poorly with accessories and are nowhere near as sharp.

Compared with the earlier Micro Motor 100mm Macro that Canon made (which I also own), the USM lens focuses *very* fast. The USM lens also can accept Tripod Collar B (by use of a small plastic adapter)--I recommend you buy the collar with the lens, as adjusting to a vertical composition with a tripod means repositioning everything. The front element is not recessed in the USM model, which makes lens cleaning easier than with its predecessor. And build quality is improved--the earlier model was prone to its switches breaking (could fix it yourself with the ordered part, but really annoying) and eventually the Micro Motor gearing gave out (no trouble so far with the USM ring motor). The USM model will work with Canon's 2x teleconverter by interposing a 12mm extension tube, allowing 2x magnification with lots of working distance, though this is not nearly as nice a solution as the 180mm lens referenced below.

I will quibble with another reviewer--Canon does make sharper lenses, and sharpness compared with the earlier model is virtually the same. But this is still one of the sharpest lenses you can buy, and ergonomically a huge improvement over its predecessor.

Having said that, Canon now has an L-series 100mm macro that is a bit sharper and has better bokeh (out-of-focus highlights). A serious hobbyist might consider that lens, though it costs about 40% more on the street. I purchased the Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro Lens less than a year ago, and am very impressed with its greater sharpness and working distance relative to this lens. If you work much with small critters, take a look at that lens before making a purchase.

If you are building up a set of lenses for outdoor/nature photography and you do occasional macrophotography, this might be the first or second lens to buy. If you work significantly at magnifications greater than 1:1, consider the Canon 65mm 1x-5x Macro zoom.

This is the lens I leave on my camera for general purpose use. At non-macro focus distances, it is a very fast lens in a convenient short-telephoto length. The images are sharp out to the corners. This is one of those great Canon lenses that probably deserves an L-series rating but is available without the red stripe and exorbitant cost.

Tested in an astrophotography context (point sources on black backgrounds excellent for revealing aberration and coma), I have found that this lens is reasonably sharp at f/4 and completely sharp by f/5.6. For daylight terrestrial photography, the tiny aberrations caused by the wide-open f/2.8 aperture are hardy noticeable and by f/4 the images are exquisitely sharp.

There is a lot of glass in this lens it is heavy. I highly recommend buying the tripod collar as it allows you to attach the camera and lens to a tripod or ballhead with much better balance.

Also, if you plan on using the macro functionality, keep in mind that the effective f-stop of the lens goes way up when you're focusing at very close range. At 15cm from the front surface, it performs as though it were an f/9. You'll either want a lot of light or a very steady subject and a good tripod (another reason to buy the hideously overpriced tripod collar).

The 100 f/2.8 macro is very sharp, even for general shooting, so it works great for portraits, too. When I'm not using a zoom, this is my walkaround lens for people, relatively tight scenes and even indoor sports. Think of it as a great lens that also shoots macro than the other way around. Hard to beat that versatility at the price.

But it comes into its own at close distances. If you've never had a macro lens, you'll run around shooting everything in sight because everything looks new from a macro perspective.

Canon has several macro lenses. I prefer the 100 mm over shorter lenses because I don't have to get quite as close to that bee or wasp. The 180 mm gives you even more distance from your subject, more background blur and amazing sharpness. But it's much more expensive and in most cases you'll need a tripod, and I shoot a lot of improptu macros as I'm hiking.

For extreme closeups with larger-than-life images, there's the MP-E 65. It goes up to 5X, compared to the 100mm's 1X, but you lose autofocus with this lens. In fact, you set your magnification and then move the camera until the object is in focus! As you get beyond about 2X, the viewfinder gets fairly dark. If you're doing still life macro work, it's amazing. I'll probably get one someday for shooting my mineral colletion.

One thing to keep in mind with any macro is that because of the close distances, you're often in lower light conditions. Althought it's fairly pricey, I'm using the MT-24 EX, which lets you adjust the direction of the twin flashes. The MR-14EX ring light is a couple hundred dollars cheaper but will produce a slightly flatter image. And you can always use one of the standard flashes, though the closeness of your subject may cause some odd shadows.

This is hands down the sharpest and most used lens that I own. The combination of macro capability, relatively fast 2.8 aperature, and prime sharpness keeps it on my camera more than anything else. I shoot a variety of subjects from macro nature work to indoor sports, and this lens never lets me down.

One of the major compliments I have for this lens is its versatility (I disagree with many of the reviews here.) I continually find 100mm to be an ideal focal length with my 1.6 APS-c sensor XT for shooting indoor swimming and diving competitions. This length allows for beautifully tight framing, slightly compressed depth of field, and shallow focus to get amazing portrait shots while eliminating distracting background. The speed of the lens allows me to catch swimmers in the air without using a disturbing flash. This is imperative because flash photography is prohibited at the start of a race. Apart from sports events, the lens allows for very intimate portraits without having to be in the subjects face. This performance along with macro capability truly make this a multi-purpose lens.

I usually hand hold for sports photography with good results (the accessory battery grip on my XT is invaluable for this), and usually use a tripod for nature and still-life situations. If I've had one too many cups of coffee I'll use a monopod during sports events. I do wish the lens came with the accessory tripod collar, because it is undeniably a fairly heavy piece of glass, but it is not so important that I have shelled out for one yet. I have no complaints with the AF, and I find that the switch to limit the AF range away from the extreme macro is very helpful. Once you use Canon's USM lenses, you will never buy anything else. The large and easy to use manual focus ring is a luxury. It allows for quick manual override and great control when switching to manual focus. In many situations that I don't want to carry my large bag with me, the 100mm and my 17-40mm L usually cover just about everything I need. (I know that my idea if traveling light is not taking the kitchen sink however.)

This is not an L lens for reasons of the lack of some weather resistance and L level coatings, but don't let that dissuade you. It easily outperforms both my L zooms in sharpness and I find it to be comparable in contrast and color. The level of performance and a price that is a fraction of many L lenses makes this an unbeatable value.

I bought this lens a little over a year ago for macro shooting. I quickly found out, however, that to shoot Macro-only with this lens is a crime. It is a very versitile lens. Its fast f/2.8 aperture makes for good shooting in low light. I pretty much use this outdoors as the 100mm with the 1.6x crop factor of my Rebel XT eliminates most indoor oppurtunities.

I frequently use this lens for family portraits, the resultant photo is so crisp and clear and the bokeh really helps add snap to the primary subject.

As others have stated, this is a heavy lens. It doesn't have Image Stabilization (IS) so a tripod or monopod is a great accessory to get the best images. I use a beefy monopod for my best shots, although I have a lot of handheld gems...

If you are tight for cash, this isn't the "one lens" that does it all. If you are looking for a versitile lens that can do outstanding macros and portraits, THIS is that lens.

This product is of a terrible quality.

Here are my observations:

1. The video is either dominated by a red or yellow color.

2. Followed the steps to change the configuration and I lost access to the SD Card as a storage when connecting it to the PC.

3. Since I cannot access the SD Card as storage, I was never able to reconfigure the camera again.

4. No trouble shooting, web link, or support found.

5. Do not let the battery run out, otherwise, the device will reset to Jan 1, 2008; cannot be reconfigured for the same points in 2 and 3.

6. As others reported, the advertised included 8GB micro sd card is not included.

Over all quality poor, and junk.

I wish I have the ability of not giving it any rating (meaning zero stars) but I must give a star at the least.

This little camera/video recorder actually captured a cat in total darkness. worked great. However, when it arrived it was missing a memory card. In order to remedy the problem, I would have to return the camera to Amazon. The camera will not work without the card. I chose to buy a card instead and not go thru the return process.

I needed a cable for my new notebook Display port to be able to plug in my TV via HDMI. There are many other adapters out there for much more money, but this one gets the job done at a great value. It is great that it has a flexible cable in between instead of the one piece... that is just asking to be broken if you ask me on those other models. This one is flexible and connects securely in the port. Sound is also transmitted through this adapter. This is a plus because it is an optional part of the Display port standards, so not all adapters support this feature, but this one does. Great Value... would definately recommend.

Now back to review, This cable i bought for my Lenovo Thinkpad T420 laptop and it worked excellent. Picture quality was way better and sound was exceptionally good. Worked by just plug and play method. No drivers required at all.

I also observed that quality is better than the direct HDMI cable which i used in my another Lenovo Y550 laptop with NVIDA graphics card. Where as Thinkpad was with corei5 processor supported graphics chipset and still the quality and sound was better in Thinkpad. Go for it and grab yours before it get sold out. Reasonable price as compared to other listings, build quality is strong. There's also the button on display port which you need to press to pull out the adapter. I liked this button as this avoids loose connections causing faults.

Highly recommended for Thinkpad Users as it is tried and tested in mt own T420 model.

I purchased this product with hesitation based on the many poor reviews of similar products that stated the clip was too tight/too loose/broke off/etc. My video card has an HDMI port and a displayport. I already had a monitor using the HDMI and my monitors don't have a displayport so I needed this little adapter. I haven't had any issues with this product so far. I've had it in the back of my desktop tower under my desk for a month now and it has been performing perfectly.

Still working without any issues. I've had to move my computer a few times since purchasing but I haven't had any issues.

I purchased this Cable Matters Displayport to HDMI Cable Adapter Male to Female (sold by Cable Matters, fulfilled by Amazon) to hook up my Lenovo Thinkpad X220 with DisplayPort to my HDTV.

Video worked fine but sadly, audio did not pass through. I tested this using two separate HDMI cables and two different HDTV sets (Toshiba Regza and Panasonic Viera) which I believe ruled out the tv set or cable, leading me to suspect that this cable adapter just isn't compatible for my use.

I loved the construction, the connectors look to be gold plated, the DisplayPort end has a locking release tab so it won't wiggle its way out of the laptop by accident. I prefer a cable adapter vs a dongle adapter (without cable) because I feel that it puts less stress on the laptop DisplayPort connector, especially if accidentally bumped.

As much as I'd love to keep this, I can't live with just video without audio, so I sent it back.

This may work with other laptop models but it didn't with my Thinkpad X220.

Update: 8/13/2012.
