Pentax Optio S50 5MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

Bought this camera about 6mo ago. After ~2GB of pictures:

1. Decent quality you gotta understand that it is not SLR so for a compact it is OK. Viewing 100% size shows no visible defects.

2. Really small important since what good is your camera if it stays at home most of the time. That one fits in the pocket, but you'll feel it there.

3. Takes AA batteries good thing just in case

4. Has multiple modes and settings not too useful, but it doesn't hurt either.

Now for what could be better:

1. Slow as you would not believe shooting @5MP and best resolution. When this red light is blinking (writing to card) you can't do anything and it lasts forever.

2. Slow in general takes too long between you push the button and the picture being actually taken. Pple turn around, move out of frame and so on.

3. Buttons are tiny well, the camera is tiny too, but still...

If you plan to use gloves or just have large hands forget about it.

4. Battery usage I use rechargable 2400mAh ones and they don't last too long. Indoor shots almost always use a flash so battery indicator goes yellow after about 20-30 shots no matter how you recharge your batteries (there are different ways to do it)

Conclusion: It is worth the price if you need really small camera to take anywhere and want to stick with the combination of SD storage and regular AA batteries

I bought this camera after looking at several other cameras. I liked the size of the camera, Pentax name and claimed battery life. I think the color reproduction is ok, but not great, and the picture clarity is ok, but not great. Using 2400 mAh recharageble batteries made this camera almost useless. Since almost every shot requires a flash, I only would get 30 or so pictures before needing to switch batteries. And since NiMH batteries loose charge when not in use, I would find the batteried dead if I left the camera a few day. I have since purchased some 1400 mAh, Li-ion CRV3 rechargeble batteries. These are a must for anyone with this camera. I can't tell you how many pictures it gets per charge, because after 2 weeks it is still on the first charge, and has not even dropped from the full charge indicator! This is several hundred pictures, viewing and deleting pictures on the camera and transfering the picutes to a computer. As a bonus, since the CRV3 battery supplies a full 3V, the flash charges about twice as fast. (NiNM AA batteries are only 1.3 V each)

The main problem with the camera is how incredibly slow it is. This camera is mostly used to take pictures of our kids, and kids do not sit still enough for this camera. Every aspect of shooting a picture is very slow. The other draw back is that this camera needs a lot of light, and the flash doesn't help for anything more than a few feet (about 10 or so) away. Outside shots are usually fine if the sun is at least partially out.

I am currenly looking for a faster digital camera, with a bigger lens to help in low light situations.

I bought this camera as my first digital camera. its simplistic design and 5mp are what turned me on to this product. when i got it home and started to play with is i realized it had an abundance of features that i didn't notice at the store. it can take point and shoot pictures easily, it has a manual focus override, and you are able to take black and white or my personal favorite black, white and red! these are just a few of the features on this relatively inexpensive camera. to top it all off it takes really really good high resolution pictures that you'll think were taken by a professional.

I bought the Pentax S50 last December. I already own a Nikon 5700 but I was looking for a camera that I could:

a) take anywhere, and

b) take scuba diving

With its compact size and available underwater housing (and even supported "marine" modes) the Pentax seemed to fit the bill. I was actually undecided between the S50 and the Casio Exilim, so I actually ran a side-by-side comparison of the two. The S50 lost out in almost every discipline, the most important being picture quality (even though I was comparing to a 3MP Z30!), which I actually found to be quite poor on the S50. Apart from this, I was disappointed by the LCD screen, which was smaller and far less sharp than the Casio's, the larger size (although not by much) and the general build quality the buttons, flaps and doors just felt cheap compared to other cameras.

On the positive side, I did like the idea of being able to use standard AA's, but when you consider the amazing battery life of today's ultracompacts, it's really not an advantage. I was also impressed by the incredible array of features and options that the S50 packs in unfortunately, these don't make up for the poor picture quality. My advice would be to choose a Casio Exilim. If price is an issue, get the Z30 or Z40 you will still get better pictures.

this is a great little camera. i bought it because of its size. it has some great features like being able to reduce the file size photos stored on it. panoramic assist is good and its very easy to use. it has some drawbacks too. red eye reduction always has to be used. the pictures are quite dark in low light settings and my biggest problem, low battery life. it uses 2 AA batteries. the rechargable batteries that came with it were charged for 12 hrs as recommended. i only got about 90 pictures out of them (16 were with

flash). it also takes a while to write the images to the disk( even with the enhanced SD II card)

but i still think its a great camera.

Sony HXR-NX3D1 NXCAM 3D Compact Camcorder, Dual CMOS Sensor, 10x 3D Optical Zoom, 3.5 inch LCD, 96G

I've do a bit of aerial photography, and recently I decided to take the plunge and try it in 3D. Although I tend to use Canon video gear, it looks like Sony has made a significant investment in 3D. Sony seems to have the greatest range of products on the market so far, and the NX3D1 seemed like the right product for my needs.

There's a lot to like about this camera, from the overall construction and "feel" to the quality of the videos you can produce. Although I haven't used Sony camcorders in a long time, everything felt comfortable to me, from the placement of the controls to the overall balance. In my aerial photography ventures, the camera rides attached to a small radio-controlled helicopter in a custom housing that gives me remote monitoring, as well as pan, tilt and zoom capabilities. Adapting the camera and remote to my (admittedly unusual) needs has been pretty simple, so I give Sony high marks in this regard. Sony customer service went above and beyond to get me wiring diagrams and information about the remote control protocol so that I could adapt the NX3D1 to my needs very impressed with their service.

Originally, I was somewhat torn between this unit and its big brother, the PMW-TD300. While much more expensive, the TD300 gives you up to 35Mb/s bitrates substantially more than the 28 Mb/s on the NX3D1. My Canon 2D video equipment produces 50Mb/s, and I was worried that the NX3D1 would reveal compression artifacts or have other quality issues related to the lower bitrate. Unfortunately, the TD300 is heavier than my equipment can lift, so in the end, the NX3D1 was my only choice. In the end, I suppose for 2D video, I'll keep using my Canon but the stunning 3D videos you get from the NX3D1 make it easy to overlook issues like bitrates.

When used in still image or 2D mode, image quality is good, but not terrific. Exposure is spot-on, the lenses are sharp and contrasty, and the autofocus system keeps up with whatever you point the camera at. Still, the relatively small sensors used in camcorders don't have the dynamic range, low-light performance or noise qualities of larger cameras (say, your DSLR in movie capture mode). Of course, you probably buy this sort of camera for 3D, and so 2D or still picture performance is no doubt of secondary importance.

Sony does an excellent job with image stabilization on the NX3D1. Even in my aerial photography setup (which tortures most image stabilization solutions!), videos are generally smooth and fluid probably the best I've seen on any brand of camcorder. Sound quality is likewise quite good, whether you use the built-in microphone or the XLR inputs. The 96GB storage capacity is plenty for me, and Sony makes it fairly painless to offload to an external drive or simply carry lots of SD memory cards. Battery life is reasonable I get about 2-3 hours depending on whether I have the microphone attached or not, and there's a larger capacity battery if run-time is important to you.

While I'm new to 3D, I didn't find it especially difficult to adjust and configure the 3D settings to get topnotch video. The 3.5" LCD is clear and bright, even in daylight, and the "no-glasses" 3D mode gives you a good idea of what the final product will look like. The one challenge I had with 3D was in editing and post processing. My 2D equipment and Adobe-based software just doesn't cut it for 3D, and to be honest, I still don't feel as though I have a great solution here. Of course, this isn't Sony's fault I need to upgrade to 3D capable monitors, software, etc.

Overall, I like the Sony NX3D1 a lot and I'm glad I gave it a try. Although I feel like 3D is a big step and there are still some missing pieces, the Sony NX3D1 is a big part of the equation, and I don't think you'd regret going with one.

I've been shooting with the Sony 3D NX Cam since 8-2011. I took 2 of them to Africa to film a safari. The camera is lightweight with great image quality. The touch screen view finder allows the user to control all aspects of the image settings. You can switch from 2D to 3D shooting modes with the flick of a switch and it has great low light capabilities. So far I've shot stunning footage of Nature, wildlife, people, buildings etc: I promise you will fall in love with this camera too. Welcome to the new age of 3D cinematography.

Samsung HMX-U20 Ultra-Compact Full-HD Camcorder (Red)

Got the Samsung HMX-U20 to document spaces in my line of work. I thought the item itself was compact and just what I needed. I was right in that it was compact and it works great to documents spaces and more, but the con I had with this item was that when a space was dark, it did not adjust to compensate. I know typical camcorders have that LUX ability and, not sure if it is just this compact item or all hand held flip items like this, but when a space is not bright, you might as well turn this thing off. That would have to be my only con on this item.

Since then, I have used it for several more documentations and it has been fine. the HD is great and visually it is crisp. Images (photos) also come out nicely.

I'm really torn on this one. On the one hand, this camera shoots really nice video outside. At noon. With clear skies. The time lapse feature is also really cool (if a bit gimmicky) and I wish more brands would implement this feature into theirs, and the optical zoom is a great feature.

On the other hand, when you try to use it inside, or outside in less than absolutely perfect conditions, the video produced is completely unacceptable. There is so much noise that anything you shoot is just unwatchable. It's a shame because like I said, when you have PLENTY of light the video is so clear and sharp it's nearly stunning. Now, there IS a twilight mode on the camera you can turn on, but it doesn't seem to have any noticeable effect.

Luckily, I don't have any of the audio noise that other reviewers have complained about, but I should've listened to them anyway. This one, whether brought down by audio noise or by video noise, needs a lot more work before it's ready for primetime.

Certainly plenty of potential with this one, but I didn't pay $130 to beta test Samsung's camera. It's going back today.

I read the Amazon reviews of this camera before buying & so knew the problems people have had. I bought the SDHC memory card for the camera & have experienced NO PROBLEMS AT ALL WITH THE CAMERA. I took the camera on a trip to Italy & used a non-HD setting for my videos with great results. The still pictures aren't as good as those from my Canon EOS, but that's to be expected.

I didn't use the time-lapse function so can't comment on that function of the camera.

I uploaded both stills & videos to my Mac & had no trouble editing them using iPhoto & iMovie.

This is a great mini-HD camera for the money!!

I've had my unit for several weeks and its a lot of fun. It's not my primary camera nor is it my primary camcorder but I wanted something to play with that gives HD and could take pictures and this fits the bill. I live in Hawaii and love to film different locations. The HD does justice to the beauty of the islands. The pictures are fine and the unit is very lightweight, easy to carry. I use a Gorilla tripod with it and do most of my filming using the tripod. Handheld is not good, the picture is too shaky. I don't use it indoors much so low light is not a big requirement for me. The other feature I really like is the time lapse photography. Never having had a camera that did this (too expensive), this feature is an added bonus and lots of fun. I use 1 sec intervals most of the time. I use a Class 4 16GB SDHC and that gives me over 2 hours of video recording time (154 mins at 720/60p).

Pros: Lightweight, beautiful HD videos, Time Lapse, uncomplicated controls, several resolutions (720/30p, 720/60p, 1080/30p), expandable memory, 3x zoom for still photography (digital zoom for video)

Cons: No flash, no image stabilization

I was searching all data on HD camcorders and basically, as most consumers, looking for the range in which I can afford. When I first searched for the camcorders based on performance, features, storage capacity, the ranges came up and above $900+. This was out of my range.

Then I went to brands, quality and actual customer reviews and sample videos from consumers.

I went to youtube to search for actualy consumer video tests and samples.

I searched Canon, Panasonic, Sony, etc.

As Canon and Sony came up on top rated, i also read a lot of negative comments, noisy this and noisy that, or this complaint and that complaint. When I went to samsungs big gun the S16, i read almost no complaints aside from "this feature was not here", but in terms of quality no negatives.

The thing that got me to buy it was Amazons incredible price compared to others.

I got a great deal that disappeared in a day so i was lucky.

Cons:

1. When I turn on the camera it defaults zoomed in a little. I always need to zoom out or advise anyone to zoom out prior to recording

2. I wish it had "night vision" like Sony. This is not needed, but a nice feature to have.

3. No built in light for filming outside. Like camping or walking around. I believe you need to buy a light attachement for that.

4. Wifi is awesome, but mainly and prefered to be used with Samsung TV, products, etc.

I prefer cable, but the Wifi is a great feature to use.

If you pay full price, please look at other camcorders, but the deal I got, it was great!

There are a lot of options in this camcorder that I might not use, but they are good features to have.

SLow motion is awesome, as well as the time lapse. I bought this for my first child and believe I can use this for a long time. oh yea, 64GB internal SSD, i will never need those expensive high capacity memory cards.

After ~ 2 months of use I have mixes feelings about results, and life expectancy of tis camcorder.

Here are some of the positives:

1 Ease of use

2 Good choice of connections from HDMI to Wi-Fi

3 Excellent storage; 64 GB; more than what the average user need without the need for frequent transfers to offline storage.

4 Good wide angle focusing

5 Wind cut is a good option for outdoor recording

6 LED light is a good addition for close up picture taking.

Now here are some of the negatives:

1 Poor battery life...don't expect more than 60-70 min life in HD recording.

2 Digital zoom is useless. However, the optical zoom range is as good as advertised.

3 Still picture is no better than a cheap 5 MP camera. I certainly expected more from a unit of this price.

4 Samsung Inteli Sync software crashes on Win 7 64bit system.

5 USB data throughput extremely slow even on my Win 2007 server with 16 GB RAM, and 2 TB free space. It takes close to 45 minutes to transfer 16 GB data from the camcorder to my computer. This is about twice the time it took my Sony camcorder to transfer the same amount of data.

6 Unit often loose focus when zooming in-out, and on fast action subjects like soccer games.

7 Clicking sound from rocket T-W switch can be heard on the recording.

Regarding life expectancy of this unit i am not convinced that it will last very long based on some of the inconsistiencies observed to date. Things like not powering on when you open the LCD screen, having to do a factory reset twice in 2 months; ETC.

Overall, I think Samsung should have done a much better job with this unit.

I like this camera for the fact that is uses an SD card. I've had Hi-8 tapes, Mini-DVDs, and now this. This is the simplest form of recording yet. I love it! It's easy very easy to use and the pictures are sharp (HD). Transferring files is such a snap now!! I would very much recommend this camera.

Samsung is the only camcorder manufacturer that I've purchased from that doesn't have a one-year labor and parts warranty. The LCD screen one day started to have all these black lines and spots in the center and sides on the display after 5months and I called Samsung to request a repair and was told I needed to pay half the repair cost plus shipping even though it is a manufacturer defect. For such an expensive camcorder I am really disappointed with such a lousy warranty and reliability issues. This will be my first and last Samsung product I will purchase.
