Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security--Outdoor Add-On Camera

Logitech WiLife Digital Video Security--Outdoor Add-On CameraI have a mixed review about this product. It is easy to install and works great. The problem I had was when the camera stopped working just after my one year warranty expired. I spoke to their customer service and they had me run a diagnostic report. This was sent to their diagnostic department and I received the following email "Thank you for reporting a problem to the WiLife Diagnostics Group!

Your email is being reviewed and a company representative will contact you." I was never contacted by a company rep. I did however buy another camera. I just hope it last longer than a year, and I hope their customer service improves.

I use the wilife system in my business. I have indoor cameras inside and outdoor cameras in my drive-thru (which is still technically inside). The outdoor cameras only last me about 6 months. The indoor cameras have lasted 2 years and are still going strong. I recently purchased 2 additional indoor cameras to replace the 2 outdoor cameras that continue to fail.

The system is great and the quality of the images are outstanding. I do however recommend avoiding the outdoor cameras.

I am happy with this system. It performs as described and is perfect if you don't want to hack up your house running network cable. I have a full up 6 camera system, and it's has performed in excess of my expectations.

Based on all of the negative reviews floating around about this setup, you'd think this system was a joke....from software, connection issues, performance issues, it doesn't do this, it doesn't do that. Whatever. I find that most negative reviews come from technically challenged individuals, or those that have unrealistic expectations. We haven't experienced the issues others have reported. We have the most current software (v2.5) and camera firmware, and have had no issues whatsoever. For the price, we're getting what we paid for.

The specs on this system are clear. If it doesn't meet your needs, then don't buy. We find that it surpasses our expectations. It's great to have a record of all of the activity that goes on around our home while we are absent. Now that we have this system, we find that we cannot live without it. It's like going from dialup to high speed internet....you can never go back. We'll never be without a surveillance system again.

The Logitech outdoor cameras have a known defect (caps melting). They fail in about a year. This is due to the following four 1000uF capacitors: C26, C27, C31 and C32. The caps that were in the original release were 10 volt caps. The next release they were 16 volt. I had 7 dead cameras. I replaced them with a 25 volt high quality cap and they have worked ever since. The caps don't fit perfectly (the original are 8mm diameter versus the 12.5mm that I put in) so you'll need to insulate the leads and let them float above the circuit board. Here is the Digi-key part number for the cap I used: UHE1E102MHD6.

Here is the link for the cap

They are 81 cents each.

The caps are from Nichicon and are Aluminum Electrolytic. They are rated for 10,000 hours at 105 degrees C. They are through hole, radial can, 12.5mm diameter.

I used a high reliability type HE. Here is a link. You could also use TT, PA, HV, your choice.

When I first got the system and installed it, I was excited. Installation was easy. It started right up. It was sending me email alerts. I could access my cameras from the internet. How cool was that!!

But now 3 months later the bloom is off the rose, and I am ready to scrape it or send it back. It is just too unreliable. I have my system at a location that I only visit once a week. I would estimate that less than 25% of the time does it make through an entire week with all three primary functions (local recording, email alerts, internet viewing) all working, all week. And it's not just one thing. It's multiples. Logitec's help system always has suggestions but reliability never improves and the same problems continue to repeat.

So unless you can physically access the system daily and/or are ok with parts of the system going down for periods of time, I would stay away from this product.

Great idea. Flawed execution.

Zeikos MB-D80 Vertical Multi-Power Battery Grip + 2 EN-EL3e Batteries + Accessory Kit for Nikon D80

Zeikos MB-D80 Vertical Multi-Power Battery Grip + 2 EN-EL3e Batteries + Accessory Kit for Nikon D80 D90 Digital SLR CamerasThis vertical grip is surprisingly well built. It makes a solid connection to the camera (in my case a D90 but it also works with a D80). The controls have a solid feel and there is a certainty when you push a button or turn a dial. The rubberized panel adds to the solid feel and provides a bit more "camera to hold on to." This is especially important if you are used to larger SLRs (e.g., D200).

A few years ago I bought an after-market battery grip (made by someone else) for my D200 and was very disappointed. It didn't connect solidly to the camera, the controls didn't always work, and the rechargeable batteries need to be inserted into a small tray and *that* was slid into the camera. I was concerned that all aftermarket vertical grips were made to that same low standard. My plan was to buy the "real" Nikon grip for my D90. However, after reading a lot of good things about this version decided to take a chance on this version. I'm glad I did.

Not only does it work perfectly but it also looks like the camera.

I can't imagine the Nikon grip could be made better or fit better.

Obviously this makes it more convenient to hold your camera in a vertical grip. Since it holds two rechargale batteries you can shoot longer before having to change them. It also include a carrier that allows you to use six AA batteries. This is handy if you ever find yourself with dead rechargeable batteries (and still manage to have the carrier with you).

Perhaps a lesser known benefit is that you get increased stability. This is due to the extra weight provided by the grip and battery. A final benefit is that you can use Da'Grip (as described in The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light from Small Flashes, a book every photographer should read), this is money well spent.

There are several grips available, most more expensive and a few less, that provide many or all of these same benefits. What makes this product stand out is that is has best-of-breed quality while remaining one of the least expensive.

If you want a vertical grip then this is the one to get. The only question is if you buy this package and get the extra stuff or of you just buy the grip alone: Zeikos ZE-NBG90 Battery Power Grip for Nikon D80 & D90.

I got this grip for my D90. Since the grip requires two batteries and I only had the one that came with the camera I figured I'd give this version a shot over the grip alone. The grip works just as advertised and provides better ergonomics for vertical shots. The batteries hold a charge just fine so far and the AA adapter works as well. The camera recognized the AA batteries automatically and showed the battery level for the two camera batteries like it's supposed to. I really like the extra capacity so I can set a long duration for the remote shutter release and use live view as much as I want.

I wouldn't recommend assigning too much value to the accessory kit although the blower works and the brush has fine bristles. The bulb smells like cheap rubber from China the kind where the smell never goes away...but don't let that hold you back from purchasing. Shipping by this seller was fast.

11/26/11 Update: I have been using this grip for a while and still recommend it with two caveats: 1) it's not really rigid enough to use with a tripod, especially with a longer lens as it adds a little unwanted motion. 2) I've been using a strap that connects to the tripod mount (and I really like the strap) but it doesn't work with the grip. Since the camera hangs from the bottom of the grip, the grip's electrical connections intermittently loose contact inside the camera so I have to wiggle it to turn on.

Buy Zeikos MB-D80 Vertical Multi-Power Battery Grip + 2 EN-EL3e Batteries + Accessory Kit for Nikon D80 Now

First of all the battery grip is good for the price. Of course the built quality is not close to that of Nikon brand. Nonetheless, the battery grip does what it is designed for. The transition between empty battery to full battery is smooth. However, after a year of use, I do notice some problems arising. First of all, during high humidity weather, the battery grip do have connection issues. Secondly, when it was new, the battery grip completely drains one battery before switch to another. However, after a year or so, I have noticed that the secondary battery can't held its charge while the primary battery is in use.

As for batteries it's a hit or miss situation, one of the battery works great, and is still kicking well a year of abuse. Meanwhile, the other battery started to have problems after two three months. The battery started to have transition problems, for example if the primary nikon battery drained completely, this third party battery work kick in. I had to remove the Nikon battery and restart the camera. After about 6 month later the battery died completely. Meanwhile the other third party battery still works fine.

I purchased this product about a year ago for $72 and its been working well. Fools the tools into thinking my D90 is a D3 especially when I put my Mamiya 645 120 Macro on it. But this aside this product is worth it for the batteries alone. I find they charge as quickly as Nikon's own and give me roughly the same number of shots. The best part is being able to take 2000k + pics and not have to worry about running dry or storing another Li-ion.

The grip itself is sturdy and reliable, makes for a much better shooting experience both vertically and horizontally. Makes gripping the camera easier in general with any type of lens espeacially heave glass. You can hold it walking around with out that feeling its going to slip out of your hand as your fingers can really secure themselves.

Strong enough to work on my Manfrotto with no torque shake and is even strong enough to carry around locked to your pod provided you have a metal shoe and trust your gear.

GREAT VALUE AND NO COMPLAINTS

Nikon D600 Digital SLR Camera & 24-85mm VR AF-S Zoom Lens with Nikon 70-300mm VR AF-S Lens + 32

Nikon D600 Digital SLR Camera & 24-85mm VR AF-S Zoom Lens with Nikon 70-300mm VR AF-S Lens + 32GB Card + Case + Battery + Filters + Remote + Accessory KitI've been very pleased with the D600 along with the 24-85mm and 70-300mm lenses in this kit. For the most part, the other stuff in the kit is junk, particularly the EN-EL15 battery made not by Nikon, but is "Power2000" brand. If they had sent a rock it would have been just a useful as the battery holds no charge. The other things are pretty low-end stuff that seems more appropriate to a $50 camera than a $2000 D600. Having said that, the bag is made by Nikon and is not too bad, but would be much more useful if it were a bit bigger. The included 32GB flash card is class 10, but not UHS, so you'll likely purchase a Sandisk instead of using this one. The extra "kit" stuff fortunately didn't add much to the cost, so I'm not too bothered by it.

The camera was serial number 3036xxxx and appears to have a bit of the "dust/oil" issue though after about 300 pictures it isn't too bad. The 24-85mm lens focuses nicely as is, but the 70-300mm lens required a -12 "fine tune" to move it's back-focus forward. The lenses are sharp and cover a pretty broad range, so if you don't need PRO-level lenses, these may be all you need. I'm quite happy with the whole deal.

I should also add that Cameta got the order out as quickly as I could have hoped for.

Recommended.

Very nice camera, super nice package and the quality is beyond expectations

I wonder what it can do with a fix 50mm lens then ?!

I tried few Canons, even Mark II, but for me, this camera is just what the Doctor prescribed :-)

Canon XLR Mic Adapter/Shoulder Pad for XL1 & XL1S

Canon XLR Mic Adapter/Shoulder Pad for XL1 & XL1SIt is very nice to have more versatility when considering audio input. This gives you that plus a shoulder pad. I feel it's a tad short. At 6'4", it could just be me though. It also has the capability to attach a bracket to add more goodies to your rig. Overall, very useful and highly recommend.

Lets say that after purchasing the Canon XL1S fro the same people this XLR MIC ADAPTER Item functioned better than the Camera Which continues to eat tapes, Of course the 350.00 to 500.00 dollars I WILL NEED TO SPEND ON REPAIRS AND SHIPPING ARE OF NO IMPORTANCE TO AMAZON......

Infrared CCTV Security Surveillance Camera 700TVL High Resolution 1/3" Sony Super HAD Color CCD DSP

Infrared CCTV Security Surveillance Camera 700TVL High Resolution 1/3' Sony Super HAD Color CCD DSP Waterproof Indoor/outdoor Infrared Illumination 114FT Nightvision , 2.8-12mm ZOOM Lens 5mm 42 IR Leds Camera Color with Free Cable Managed Mounting BracketI am used to the bullet sized cameras but this one exceeds those smaller sizes. This is fine though with me, it will let others know that they are being watched to help deter whatever doings they may think of trying. At night you can't even see the ir lights, which is unusual with all my past cameras this is not the case. The resolution is outstanding, this camera is a little touchy though with its focus though. Excellent distance viewing but it is harder to maintain that focus up close though; gets a little fuzzy the closer you are to it. Still could just be fine tuning and personal taste. For the price, it is a good camera; does the job. The only other qualm I have is that it can't really be adjusted to get the right angle, if you are setting it up near your eaves, etc... you have to make quite an adjustment to get the right angle without hanging it upside down. Again it all depends on where you need it and operator error and placement. Overall a pretty good camera.

I purchased this camera to replace one with lesser specifications. After hooking it up I can confirm that it is noticably sharper and has better night vision than my old camera. But...In two weeks this camera died. No video out. Amazon's return process was great (they paid for return shipping). I would have ordered a replacement, hoping it was just a fluke failure, but because the camera was no longer available Amazon refunded my purchase price. I purchased another/different camera for slightly more $$.

Q-See QCN8002B 1080p High Definition Weatherproof IP Bullet Camera (White)

Q-See QCN8002B 1080p High Definition Weatherproof IP Bullet CameraMy point of reference is the Foscam 8910w. That product is not a direct competitor to the Q-See QCN8002B but its what I know about and through the comparison, I think some bits of useful information is possible.

First, the Q-See is weatherproof. After the install, and for the 3 weeks since... it has rained on perhaps 3 days. The camera still functions. I looked at its via binoculars and I don't see anything noteworthy. I don't see condensation anywhere. There's no fog on the lens, etc. Again, its THREE WEEKS. I'll update this review with longer-term results.

The picture quality is very high quality. I'm used to short-distance IR. This IR projects 50 feet, in my estimation... and in my circumstances/setup... and provides a very nice clear high-contrast image/video.

I got this to make a weather camera that had a built in web server. I needed to take time-lapse video and be able to upload the images to a remote FTP server.

The images that this camera make are really great. Really, really great.

I cannot comment on the night performance as I have the camera shut off.

Perhaps one of the best features of the camera is the installation. Not having to have a dedicated power outlet for the camera is ideal for easy installation. You do need to provide your own POE Injector but those are easily found on Amazon.TP-LINK TL-PoE150S PoE Injector Adapter, IEEE 802.3af compliant, up to 100 meters (325 Feet)

All and all a very nice camera.

Samsung HMX-W200 Waterproof HD Recording with 2.4-inch LCD Screen (Red)

Samsung HMX-W200 Waterproof HD Recording with 2.4-inch LCD ScreenI purchased the Samsung HMX-W200 camera to take better video than my cell phone of my 2yr old son. I needed something small, rugged, and quick to turn on so as not to miss anything, and light enough to carry in a pocket with me most of the time.

So far this is a great little video camera. I took several video's with it, and they turned out great. A few things to note though. It uses a Micro SD, or Micro SDHC size card for storage, which you have to purchase separately. It will record 4 hours at 720 or 2 hours at 1080 on a 16GB card. One of the reviews I read on a marketing site said that you could adjust the frame rate, if you can, I have not found out how. The menu gives only 2 options 1080 and 720, both at 30fps. It only takes 1.5 seconds from when you press the power button, to being able to shoot video. When you plug the camera into your computer, it sets itself up as 2 drives, one with the data, and the other with the intelli-studio Light software. I found this to be very easy to use to do basic editing, cutting out little parts of the video that I did not want, etc... I also love the feature that allows me to pause the recording and then start it again without creating a separate file.

VIDEO:

The 1080p looks great. It also looked great on my 50in. HDTV. For the price this camcorder is well worth it. Everything Samsung claims about this camcorder is true. I have been using it for a month now. So far so good. However I have not even thought about putting it in water. But I have used it in the rain and it still worked great.

PHOTOS:

I only give the 4 stars because there is no timer for taking pictures. It's not a big deal when I'm shooting video. But I do like they way photos look on this thing. It requires the most steady hand in the world. I have used a tripod and it helps a little. I just wish I could set a timer to guarantee a still shot. The camera impressively utilizes all natural light. I understand the selling point for this camera is the 1080p video, but I don't always want to carry both my Canon EOS and my Samsung HMX when attending a public event.

OVERALL:

If you're in the market for a pocket camcorder go with this one and not the Flip. It is rugged, waterproof, and ready to record 2 seconds after you turn it on.

Buy Samsung HMX-W200 Waterproof HD Recording with 2.4-inch LCD Screen (Red) Now

Okay, so first off, it's almost impossible to find a perfect pocket cam, price-wise and quality-wise. I did rigorous amounts of research to find that all of them have their share of problems.

All scenes were shot in 1080p/30fps handheld, with Anti-Shake On. The other two options that the camera has, Face Detection and Back Light were off. The underwater shot could've been better but it's winter here and a bucket of water is the best I could do for the time being. I imagine with greater lighting and the camcorder being further away from the subject, the results will be better.

Overall I would rate the camera 3/5. Video is pretty good and it takes decent pictures as well with it's 5mp camera. The underwater mode is really cool, it allows me to really play around with some shots. It is also shockproof which extends my experimentation. I had a problems with some of it's hardware/software, for example, you press record and sometimes it takes a while for it to start/stop recording. Or when you think you press the record button and you don't. It records on an mp4 format but for some reason it has issues in Final Cut Pro. I am still an amateur at FCP but here are some the problems I have with it:

Can't Log and Transfer (SD adapter maybe?)

Sequence Playback (stops numerous times in between clips, hadn't had this problem until now)

Never Before Seen Error Messages (causes FCP to crash! Doesn't go away until I cut the clips)

Some stuff I didn't discuss in the video: The LCD screen is amazing, but some stuff that I capture, which is clearly visible on the screen, isn't when I watch it on my computer screen. Does that mean that my computer screen isn't as nice as the camera screen? Perhaps. Also, I've had a couple moments where the screen flickers and gets dim, and doesn't go back to its normal brightness until I hit a button. Also, the microphone on the camera is surprisingly good. However, it gives you little wiggle room to move your hands while holding the camera, as any movement (rubbing fingers, bumping) will cause high audio surges.

So in closing, overall video quality of the camera is good. Good not great, but come one, for what it is, what are you expecting? Like any video camera, better lighting equals better results. Microphone is really good. Pictures are fairly good, but not good at taking pictures while moving, easily blurs. So far, it seems like it's well-built, no problems aside from the flickering of the screen, which has only happened twice. The main problem, like I've said, is of the footage in post. I have tried using a 7200 rpm drive, and still I'm having issues.

Search thekingkhan13 on youtube to find my full uncompressed review with more shots. Hope this was helpful. -Thanks

I purchased this Samsung HMX-W200 to use on our Caribbean cruise. I really like the waterproof feature and used it a lot. It takes pretty good pictures, but my Cannon PowerShot takes MUCH better pictures. As for the "Full HD" capabilities... this is where I was the most disappointed. In bright light with very little action, it does do a pretty good job at HD. However, if there is a lot of movement in the shot (like splashing water or when using in a moving vehicle or boat), the resolution is pretty poor. I wouldn't even call it HD, let alone 1080p as advertised. If it weren't for the waterproof feature, I would be looking to return it. But I will probably still get a good amount of use out of it since my family is involved in lots of activities in or near water. So in summary, I would have to say I'm pretty disappointed in this camera, but still find that it will serve a purpose.

I bought this after a very bad experience with a JVC Picsio (otherwise known as garbage). It comes on quickly, records very good quality (grainy in low light conditions, but that's expected) video and stores very easily for quick access for those little moments you want to capture. It's easy to unload the video, easy to edit and easy to own. Got this for my wife who HATES overly complicated devices, which this is not. I think that if your looking for something that is really waterproof, rugged and still takes high quality video, then buy this and you wont be disappointed.

HDE Mini Display Port to HDMI Cable/Adapter

HDE Mini Display Port to HDMI Cable/AdapterI was unable to send both video and audio from a brand new (late 2010) 17" macbook pro. As a video adapter it works fine, and if that was all that I was expecting, I would give it 3-4 stars (1080i resolution doesn't fit the screen). But this cable is falsely advertised as supporting audio. I am a software developer and know how to configure these systems. So I can say this with confidence. I'm not sure why the other reviewer was able to pass audio. It could be that they sent us different cables.

Update I ended up purchasing a Griffin Mini displayport to HDMI adapter (search for "Griffin Video Display Converter"). The adapter passes video and audio via HDMI without a problem. So my original audio problem was definitely with the cable. 1080i resolution also fits in the screen properly with the Griffin adapter (although the picture is still fuzzy that may be a limitation of the video card).

This is the perfect cable if you want to connect a 2010 MacBook Pro to a TV. (Previous MacBook Pro's have a Mini DisplayPort output that does NOT support audio.) This cable supports both audio and 1080p video.

This is so much better than using a crummy dongle. Dongles fall off your desk and are awkward and clutter your area. This slim white cable looks just like an Apple product, and costs less than a crummy dongle anyway!

I combined it with a cheap DVI->female-HDMI adapter* that now lives permanently on the back of my monitor, so that I don't need to deal with that giant, multi-pinned connector ever again, and also allows me to use my monitor as an HDMI "TV" in a pinch. Great add-on if you have a DVI monitor that lacks an HDMI port.

JVC BN-VF714U 3 Hour Recording Data Battery for GR Models

JVC BN-VF714U 3 Hour Recording Data Battery for GR ModelsThis is much better than the battery supplied with the camera but I prefer the bigger battery available for this really cool camera, the JVC BN-VF733. CAUTION, don't be fooled (like I was) by buying so called "compatable" batteries, they do not work. The money you think you are saving is better spent buying the real thing.

James Hatsis

James1@OconeeAirService.com

First of all, the camera that this goes to is slightly dissappointing. That's beside the point of this review though. The reason you are probably looking at this product is because you might be tired of the standard battery's short lifespan. This product lives up to the three hour life when you use it in viewfinder mode. The only thing I don't like about the battery is the size. It extends further than the standard one and it's almost embarrasing to have it. Other than the size the battery is a great and I would say must have accessory for this particular camera.

Buy JVC BN-VF714U 3 Hour Recording Data Battery for GR Models Now

I've had this battery for a month or so, and upon each consecutive use/charge, I'd have to say I'm pleased. When fully charged, the camera's battery indicator usually says about 170-180 min total-use time... which is about what it claims. It DOES take awhile to re-charge... about 2 1/2 hrs IN the camera, but that's not too bad.
