As an independent and very low budget filmmaker, I needed a handheld rig that would allow for steady and smooth camera work, would be affordable, and would be versatile enough to use in several applications. I stumble across the Fig Rig while researching handheld rigs. I was very skeptical on how well the Fig Rig would work, considering it is a giant steering wheel. When I went to the photo store to purchase (on spec) the Fig Rig, I laughed out loud and exclaimed "what a piece of crap, this won't work." To my glee, it is friggin' phenomenal. It is lightweight and easy to use. Most importantly it is effective. You can actually run with this thing and produce a usable image comparable to and even better than lightweight Steadycams and FlowCams. Love it love it love it!

Oh by the way, I rigged a Panasonic AG-DVX100 to the rig. Took about 20 seconds to balance and off you go. Not sure how it would work with a heavier camera such as the Cannon XL-1.

I'm not a DP myself, but I bought it for our film after watching the horror film [REC]. We even talked with the DP of that film, Pablo Rosso, who recommended it. We're shooting with the Panasonic HVX200 just as they did, and while I just threw my Sony VX2000 on it to try it out, it was amazing!! Unbelievably lightwieght makes you almost wonder where that money is going but in the end, it's worth it.

The stability it provides, by having both arms extended, versus have your arms tucked in to your body, holding a shoulder cam is amazing. Even with the weight of the camera, it felt lighter than normal. Definately worth it, to have a cheaper "steadicam", and avoid the shaky-cam look.

I ultimately decided to go with the figrig over any type of stabalizing arm because of its ability to shoot sideways or upside down. Extremely easy to handle, and it didn't require any construction. It's delivered ready to go.

Like A few others, I had this on my wish list for what seems like a year.

It just seems a bit ridiculous buying an aluminum circle for 300 bucks. Once you purchase it, and take it out of the box,that feeling doesn't go away. The pieces while solid just feel cheap, and the plastic clips that come with the wheel just make you feel like you've been had.

As I shot my short however, it was definitely the go to device for covering any sweeps and dolly moves. It does the job. But you will definitely want to consider getting the zoom and focus remotes that you can clip on to the wheel itself since having to stop and refoucus definitely kills the shot. Also, if you try and go for any type of dynamic shot you will definitely need some kinda of external monitor. So out of the box, it does the job, especially if you have steady arms.

I myself found my shots not as amazing stable as it it would be, but it was far better than without it. Also, for me anyway, the wheel just isn't big enough as I realized I more stable holding my arms further apart. So my next purchase would probably be some kind of extended handles.

So in the end, if you plan to do alot of dolly shots, and dont want to fuss with the balancing act of a glidcam, then this will work. It just doesn't work "great" and the price, makes that great feel a bit less.

It did what I needed it to do for the most part, its just really hard to recommend it at that price. 150.00 would have been much more fair. especially since you can recreate the device yourself from hardware parts for under 100 dollars.

Wow...what can I say? The Fig Rig is awesome. I've had mine for about 6 years and use it every time I am shooting handheld.

Really adds a pro handheld look to your footage. Allows you to shoot high, low and everything in between. Attach lights, mics, lens controllers, etc. around the periphery of the unit. Mount a quick release plate on the bottom and snap the whole unit into your tripod quickly. The smaller your camera the better, as this unit can be fatiguing on your lower back if you have a lot of weight on the rig. Just so versatile though. Pretty much requires that your camera or camcorder have a nice LCD screen as this unit is not great for viewfinder work. Definitely for run and gun ENG, indie filmmaking or live action type of work. Yukon Digital NV Ranger Pro Binocular

I recently purchased the Yukon Digital Ranger Pro monocular with the intention of using it to glass and stalk feral pigs on family land. After using it three times there are some areas in which this tool REALLY performs well and others where it is not a replacement for low-or-zero magnification NV. THE GOOD: Once you figure out how to focus the monocular, you can resolve a VERY sharp and VERY detailed image from quite a long distance. For example, you can easily identify a feral pig from a calf at a distance of about 300 yards and you can pick out the shape of a license plate (not read it, though) on a vehicle from 400-500 yards. Both examples were on overcast nights without visible stars or moon, some ambient light from the sky but not much. The IR beam that the Ranger Pro casts is very powerful and can be used to BRIGHTLY illuminate a target for a hunting partner with a Gen 1 rifle scope on a dark night, which I think is VERY cool. I also like that you can connect this device to your digital video camera and record what you are doing, but that isn't practical unless you are hunting out of a blind or from a hide. So, in short, you get a very sharp picture with 5x magnification, an excellent IR illuminator (I can confirm that the beam is invisible to pigs), the ability to record to the digital camera you already have and a relatively small pricetag for the image quality (have to go over $2k for conventional phosphor tube NV to get the same quality). If you don't need to see a REALLY SHARP image beyond about 200 yards, you get the same thing out of the regular Yukon Digital Ranger for about 1/3 the cost. THE BAD: It would be very difficult to use this device while moving. You have to stalk, stop, glass, resume stalking. If you want continuous visibility in low/no light conditions, you need something other than this device. It eats batteries although you can stretch it's effectiveness by intermittent use, don't count on more than two hunts out of a set of batteries (leave the 12v charger plugged in when not in use because it disconnects the battery pack otherwise the small IR illuminator continually draws a small charge). I recommend feeding this thing with rechargeables. The LCD display in the eyepiece will blind you for a moment in the eye you use it on, I can see this being a major problem in some situations. This device has trouble quickly acquiring targets at different ranges if you have a set of targets at 50 yards and another at 100, it takes both hands and a few seconds to examine both. I really wish this device had a set or auto-focus and/or a push-button zoom capability like many digital cameras do either would make it a much better product.

Pros: Takes good pictures in full sun light. Very impressive HD video. easy to use on screen menu.

I took some pictures out door in day light using the cameras' automatic setting, the pictures came out in good quality. In addition I tried the video and the result was impressive.

Cons: Does not work very well in low light environment with the cameras' automatic setting. However, I found that it can take pretty good pictures when I used the manual setting, which I found very easy to use.

I looked around for a nice digital camera in the ballpark of $100. I was about to get the Olympus fe when I found this camera. I've used it for a couple of days now and have found it to be very intuitive and fun to use. Ease of use of a digital camera is an important feature for me and this camera stacks up in every way. The HD video camera is a great feature as well. So far we have been very impressed with the quality of the pictures that our new camera takes.

I would recommend this as a great point and shoot digital camera.

Camera is small and I can put it in my shirt pocket. Pictures taken with flash are great. Pictures taken outside are excellent, but if I am in the shade taking a picture, everything in the sun is washed out. I'm still trying to figure out what needs to be done to stop that. The HD Movie part is disappointing. Bought the camera from Amazon. As usual, they delivered in record time.

This camera rocks my socks! I love it, it looks awesome with its black, sexy, chicness. It has awesome effects like punk, fish-eye, panorama etc. It takes clear pictures inside and out with effects like indoor, sunset, fireworks, cuisine, night, sport, and landscape. It feels light but also feels durable. It comes with the cables that you can hook it up to your TV and see the pictures on your camera on your TV, and videos...that is really cool! Canon PowerShot SD1400IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom an

In short, this is a great camera in a very small package that produces good results! I wanted a small portable camera with HD video capabilities that I could take with me when I did not want to lug around my DSLR (Canon 40D + lenses) and this little gem fits the bill perfectly.

This camera replaced a Canon PowerShot SD780IS (Black) that I returned due to constant audio noise (hum) while recording video. Rather than risk getting another defective SD780IS with the same issue (many seem to report hearing the noise/hum), I decided to upgrade to the latest Canon PowerShot SD1400IS (Black). I am happy to report that this camera has no such issue with audio when video is being recorded.

The picture quality of the SD780IS and SD1400IS is roughly the same and on par with what one should expect from such a small ultra-portable camera. Going from 12MP to 14MP is a wash as the sensor is the same size and results are very similar. I have posted several shots of flowers under the "customer images" section of the Canon PowerShot SD1400IS 14.1 MP (Black) and also uploaded several 100% crops of each image so pixel peepers can see the detail that this camera produces.

Let me be clear, anyone that thinks this camera is going to produce anything close to the quality of a DSLR is fooling himself or herself. There is no way that this small of a package (3.6 x 0.7 x 2.2 inches ; 4.6 ounces) can produce the same image quality as a DSLR. If image quality if paramount, one would be better off considering the Canon PowerShot S90 10MP Digital Camera, but you will lose the HD video capability, some portability and spend more money. When I want extreme quality, I simply take my Canon 40D + lenses with me and shoot in RAW.

The Auto mode is smart and I think there is more happening behind the scenes than one would expect. If one takes the same image (same ISO settings, lighting, shutter etc.) in Auto and then in Program mode, the results are similar, but I think the Auto mode wins nearly every time. I have no way to confirm this, but the Auto mode seems to have different compression algorithms depending on the subject and can produce a less noisy image at higher ISO than Program mode can. Inside shots are good but I wish I could set an ISO range to force the Auto mode not to exceed 400 ISO.

Tip: If you are getting blurry images, remember that the minimum focal length is much less 5cm when at 28mm and significantly more 50cm when zoomed in to 112mm. So, if you are trying to get the camera close to your subject, be sure to gauge your zoom/subject distances properly otherwise your subject will be out of focus. Perhaps this would have helped the 1 star reviewer.

Final items of note:

1. There is no viewfinder and quite honestly, the small viewfinder on the SD780IS was useless so I do not miss having one. The LCD is bright and works great even on bright days.

2. There is no optical zoom while recording video, only digital zoom, so one has to decide on a zoom length before starting to record. This is a non-issue for me as many people overuse zoom and usually would have been better off just recording a static shot rather than making me dizzy with shaky-cam + zooming at the same time.

Bottom line: This is a fantastic pocket camera capable of decent images with HD video recording as a bonus. It is small enough that it will get taken everywhere enabling capturing of all those special moments. I would highly recommend it to anyone, so long as they realize the limitations inherent to ultra compact cameras. I hope this is review is helpful.

Update: I forgot to mention that one should be sure to get no less than a "Class 4" SD card (Class 6 would be even better) to prevent any video recording issues (missed frames etc.)

Update 2: Still loving this camera after six weeks of use, I particularly like HD video capabilities and use it all the time. The .mov video files make for easy import into Apple iMovie for editing and produces great results. At a recent event, I was able to get some very nice pictures in low light without using a flash in AUTO mode. I was really surprised at the quality achieved in such hard shooting conditions. Best results are had by not zooming too much as there is less light available (f-stop changes when zoomed). If you are noticing blurry shots, try to zoom less and get closer to your subject.

Update 3: I just ran across the recent announcement of the Canon PowerShot SD4000IS (Black) 10MP, it was just released and the list price is currently more than the SD1400IS but the new 10MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor looks very promising for decreasing the noise that is common in sub-compact cameras. The SD4000IS also has HD video capabilities with the addition of stereo sound and can be zoomed while recording video along with a new "Super Slow Motion" video function and a faster f/2.0 lens. It will be interesting to see what users think of this new camera in the coming months. I hope this update is helpful.

I bought this camera for a scuba diving trip in the Caribbean. This is my first product review, but I was so impressed with this camera, I have to do one!! We bought the underwater case to go with it so we could take it diving with us. The camera was amazing. I am just a recreational photographer (taking pictures of kids, sports and hobbies. The 1400 took amazing photos of fish, eels, and other creatures between the depths of 1 ft100ft. Some pics still turned out a little blue, while others turned out so well I think they could be published. Underwater photography is very hard, I have heard because of so many variables. I rarely get blurry pictures on land or underwater. Sometimes if the first is blurry I quickly change setting and the 2nd is not. I took several pictures while chasing fish or stingrays and 99.9% were not blurry. I don't think you can ask more than that out of a point and shoot!

Indoors the colors are very real. I do not find yellow tints to pictures. I was taking pictures of the kids around the dinner table, (which has a big window next too it) and the kids looked great. Usually with past cameras they turned out dark because of the light coming in through the window. Outdoors the pictures are beautiful. Again you may have to change the setting, but it is easy. If the water was not turquoise enough, I changed it to beach setting and the pictures showed every detail. I cannot say enough about this camera, but I think every night on our vacation we just talked about how amazed we were with it. I studied hard before buying this camera. I spent many hours looking between the 780, 940, 1300 and 1400. For a few dollars more you get a lot more cameras.

This camera is very small. It can fit into your front pocket very easy. Love it!!

The Canon PowerShot SD1400IS 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Silver) is exactly the kind of camera I have been wanting. I photograph documents a lot, so I am very concerned with the amount of detail that can be captured, especially in relatively low-light conditions. The quality of the pictures is significantly better than any other camera I have tried.

PROS:

-Produces consistently clear pictures

-Extremely compact, lightweight, and sturdy

-Easy to use (functions are intuitively organized)

-Uses standard USB cable instead of a proprietary one (SONY)

-Uses standard memory instead of a proprietary one (SONY)

-No wheels or toggle switches jutting out to get caught on things and mess up the settings (when I wanted to take regular pictures, I always seemed to be shooting movies, or photographing in a strange light setting with my SONY camera)

CONS:

-Buttons seem a little less solid than previous CANON models (my CANON IXY from about 8 years ago was designed a lot better)

-Buttons are flush with the body of the camera, so I have to operate it using my fingernails sometimes (again, the buttons on my CANON IXY were much easier to use)

-The door to the digital port for connecting the USB cable doesn't swing out very wide, and I have a feeling that if I am not careful it may not last long (the CANON IXY had a soft rubber cover that was much more flexible)

In short, this is a great product, but I hope that CANON will re-introduce some of their older design features in the new cameras in order to make them a little sturdier and easier to use. I have not noticed any problems with dead pixels--the LCD screen is beautiful. Please note that you will need to buy a memory card separately. It does not come with one.

I bought this for my wife to replace a 5 year old Sony DSC-T7 (5 megapixel point and shoot).

The Canon has FAR superior low light performance, image stabilization works well, great compact size, nice big LCD relative to the size of the camera, and easy intuitive controls (although tiny buttons, if you have big fingers, they're a touch too small in my opinion).

To compare, I took similar shots with both cameras, one outside in full sun, the other inside in low light with the flash on. I left both cameras in full auto mode. On both shots, the Canon outperforms the older camera (with 5 years of improved technology, I expected nothing less). The low light flash shot was dramatically better on the Canon (and taking a low light shot without the flash was even more extreme).

The outdoor shot, although the Canon was better, it wasn't a whole lot better. To be honest, for 14 megapixels I was expecting a little more fine detail/sharpness in the image. Shame on me for thinking a higher resolution sensor would really make that much difference -when examining fine details, it's really all about optics, and no point and shoot lens is going to measure up to my expectations (I used to do a lot of SLR photography with pro level lenses).

So don't expect anything remotely resembling SLR quality results; remember you're buying a point and shoot. You won't be making any 11x17 prints to proudly hang on the wall. But the portability of this camera is fantastic; you can easily drop it in a pocket and have it ready when the moment strikes, and the results will look great in a scrapbook or family photo album. And when I started a family I stopped lugging around an SLR and camera bag... the diaper bag is plenty. ;-)

I noticed most of the bad reviews are about picture quality. Out of the box, the pics are a bit weak. Mostly lack of detail. This is because the camera usually defaults to a very high ISO. Higher than necessary it seems.

The 1400 now has a THIRD switch between Auto Picture and Movie mode. The Program (manual) mode.

This is where the detail comes back into your pictures!

Set the ISO to between 80 and 200 and you'll see all the wonderful detail of your subjects!

It's too bad the auto mode defaults to such a grainy picture, but it can be overcome with a simple switch.

Unfortunately there is no way around this in video mode, so the 720P video is a bit on the grainy side.

Still, 14MP for under $150 and in such a compact size, this is a great camera!

I recently had the opportunity to test these HDMI cables with equipment

running at 1080p 60Hz with HDCP 148.5MHz The results were very positive.

Please note that success at 1080p depends on a lot of factors including quality

of TMDS transmitters, receivers, and anything you might have connected to the

cables like HDMI switches, repeaters, HDMI>DVD adapters, etc., therefore these

test results should be taken as a data point and not as a guarantee the cables

will be problem free @ 1080p with your specific equipment.

For example, during initial testing I had discovered through process of elimination

that one of the HDMI>DVI adapters I was using could not reliably pass 1080p. At

first I thought the cables were the issue, but after switching out the adapters, the

cables worked great.

Also please note, even though some of these cables are listed as only 1080i certified,

they did nevertheless pass 1080p without issues for the equipment combination I used.

These are well made cables and at a CHEAP price. I dont know how they can sell such quality made cables at such a low price but somehow they do, and Im glad. With Fast shipping, I got the 3 cables I ordered quickly and as Advertised.

Really, you would have to be a complete Idiot to throw a Hundred Plus on some Way overpriced Monster Cable Garbage that uses lots of False advertising to get suckers to fall for it. Guess what, these cables are also Lifetime Warranty, not like youll ever need to worry about it. Stores like to display Side By Side Test Displays, and show one with Monster Cable in use and the other with a Generic cable, and of course the one using Monster is BETTER. What most people dont notice is that the picture on the Generic Cable Display and been purposely screwed up to look bad, or whats even better, they use a Composite connection on the Generic HDTV Display, (which means its not even showing a HD Picture) and a HDMI connection on the Monster setup. Most people arent going to try and see the cables and the hookups that are behind out of sight.

You could buy one of these new cables every year, for YEARS before you ever caught up to the price of buying a single Monster (Rip-Off) cable. HDMI is also a DIGITAL signal, as in 1s and 0s being passed though the cable, or as in On/Off, Power, No power. You either get a picture or you dont. Its not like a Analog single were the picture can get worse and worse.

after buying this as a gift for my parents store i had to write a review, this setup is amazing, for starters it states in the manual that it goes 100-330 feet which is better than i expected as the amazon review only states 100 feet. the clarity of the image you see on the monitor is outstanding, i have seen many many other survielance systems and their picture quality is very poor. but with this emerson whether the person is 1 foot or 20 feet from the camera they are totaly in focus, one thing i was worried about is the fact that they have 15 sets of flourescent lights in their store i thought that might interfere with the signal, Not at all!. the sound clarity is excellent also it picks up voices that are 20-25 feet away clear! for a small 5" monitor you would have to see it to believe it, as its incredably clear.

the infrared is great you can still see in almost complete darkness like it was daytime. i had my doubts about it but was amazed again!.

one problem to note is that i we have 3 900 mhz phones in the store, when you are using one of the phones you will have interference with the AUDIO on the monitor, The video is still crystal clear. this would be great also if you had a motorhome or trailer and wanted to mount the camera in the back window to help you back up etc. as it will work intirely on batteries (Camera 8 AA) (Monitor 10 C) Pros Great picture No wires Portable Audio/Video/Infrared ability to use a second camera. Composit audio/video out so you can record on a vcr or watch on a bigger tv. Contrast/brightness/VHold controls on monitor Volume Control on monitor A/B button on monitor and camera(s) shutoff on camera for either power or infrared, plus a/b switch.

Cons 900 mhz so you will get some interference (small amount) you cant leave batteries in the monitor AND plug it into an AC Socket. (which makes it hard to just move the monitor wherever) allthough it is so light that its easy just to find another ac outlet. 2 camera's max

I am going to buy another set plus 2 additional cameras if they come back in stock, if you know someone that has just had a baby get this for them they Will love you for it.

Panasonic PV-L454 VHS-C Camcorder w/20x Optical Zoom

The PV-L424 is a pretty cool piece of gear. (With virtually no reviews)

We just got it yesterday for $419. It can be found a little cheaper, but check store reviews...

We almost bought the PCV-L552 for its big view finder and 27x optical zoom, but after a lot of digging on obscure web sites, we found that older camera suffers from a dew detector light that goes off too easily, shutting down the camera for hours. The PV-L424 just came out in 2004.

The 20x PV-L424 optical zoom is amazing. Things still look good at 40x digital, can read a UPC bar code from across the room. Things look tolerable at 120x, but ridiculous at 750k. There a single digit from the bar code fills the screen and is almost unreadable due to pixilation.

It's kind of slim, better looking than the photo.

Menus and controls seem intelligently laid out. What's used most seems to have a single button for it.

I like the way the LCD screen swivels around so that you could actually dictate into it and see yourself. It's smart enough to know to flip the image right side up when I do that.

I can't say anything yet for the durability.

We chose this VHS-C thing because I think all playback equipment for formats other than this and DVD will be difficult to find in 50 years. And the DVDs suffer from $10 disk costs (for 30 minutes) and the resolution won't match the MiniDVs until they change the image format to MPEG2. The PV-L424 seems like a great inexpensive holdover until the DVDs mature.

This camcorder was purchased as a gift for my daughter and used about 12 times over a 6 month period before experiencing intermittent failures. The labor warranty on this unit is only 90 days and labor costs for repair approach the original cost. It is unconscionable for Panasonic to market a defective product like this. This reflects poorly on their other products and unless they address this issue with me, I will avoid their products and advise others to avoid their products as well. I might chalk this up to one defective unit if I hadn't read other accounts of the same issue. This is a manufacturing or design defect that has not been addressed by Panasonic.
