Pros:

Cons:

* You need a strong wireless signal (at least good) for this to work properly, will not work properly in low signal strength. Will work but will disappear from the network after some time.

* These devices are made in China are terribly incompatible with Internet Explorer. The active X control used to view video is not digitally signed and even if you allow active x and Add ones to be installed on your computer it gives you real hard time to view the video. Tech support is unable to answer this question. However works fine in Mozilla Firefox but most of the features are disable in fire fox and can only be achieved through internet explorer.

* Field of view is another issue. It only covers some area where it is installed and the lens inside is 3.8mm which is not a wide angle. You need to buy 2.8mm wide angle to cover more area, which will cost you around 8-12 additional dollars.

* Motion activated feature can only email you or if you are using FTP will allow you to upload pictures only not the video.

* If you are using multiple access points in an area it should be configured with the right access point (by using its MAC address.

In short these devices are at their beginning stages and needs some time to get into a good shape (hardware and software). These devices are good for a small home or office but are not good at commercial level. I tried installing it in a commercial organization but end up with wasting time and money. If this camera and its brother the outdoor Wi-Fi Camera is improved for signal strength reliability and consistency with software for Microsoft Windows then it will be a good choice to install.

I bought this camera as it appeared very similar to the Trendnet IP422W. Unfortunately, there are a couple of drawbacks:

1) When connected to the network, there is a white LED on the front that continuously flashes, and there is no way to shut it off

2) Alarm events that trigger writing a video record to disk require a PC to be running firmware on it, and connected to the camera in order for this to occur. Autonomous operation writing events to a network drive are not possible.

Incidentally, this camera appears to be a BA-J011 made by BND Creative in Shenzhen

Seriously? I paid 65 bucks each for 3 of these.

Seriously though, these are made in china and it shows. ESPECIALLY in the instruction manual. It's pretty much garbage. It gets the point across, but some of it is just silly trying to decode what they are attempting to communicate.

I also have absolutely NO clue why I can't get it to show the feed on any apple products. I have tried everything I can think of from forwarding specific parts to messing with DHCP settings and configuring every bit of anything I can in my router. There is just no hope. It will NOT feed to my ipad or iphone. I've pretty much given up and will be looking for something else to use. It was a good try for 60 bucks, but in the ned, not even worth that really since it won't feed to the devices I want it to.

I wouldn't pay this price for them if i was being held at gunpoint.

I like the camerar overall.

I am changing my view on this camera to very good. After I making and error in the set up.

My caution and frustration is I bought Ip Camera so I could viw my house and rooms from offsite location.

Caution you will go through hell trying to configure these. if your Internet supplier blocks your port 80, have to configure router, pass through ports, and on and on

Internelly they are great, good price. Although I have now viewed my house from the internet outside, and I bought four of these cameras thinking it was what I wanted. I will post back after my failed endless hours plus hours of trying and reading about this proceedure to get the cam to work on WAN. I have the understanding now.

After hiring a compuer guy He fixed me up and now it is fairly simple.

others.................. You cannot just log into your home network and view your home or office. Not on cox anyway.

They will work with cox but they were worthless for any help.

The trick is to set an ip adress and a port for each of the cameras.

Then forward the same ip and ports in your router.

I am really pleased now with this camera. Especially for the price and not having to pay for a service.

It is tricky at first on IE you have to allow active x controls , unsigned active x controls and initialize scipt and active x conrrols not marked safe. Three setting. If you mark one of them ok to use previously used active x, then you can put your internet settings back to default for you internet safety.

I am pleased with this camera fter a bit of frustration but I am not the coputer geek for networking that I thought I am.

If you think this is a Foscam camera it is not!! Crashed my camera on the first day I had it, because I updated to Foscam's firmware. While it still works, it is not going to update well, and is probably not as good in quality in general as Foscam's real version.

This product was just what i wanted, i've been in photograhy for over 30 years and this is a first class kit for the price and delivery. The lens options are really good and very well priced as a kit.

The camera is simply sensational. The accompanying lenses and goods will accommodate most needs. Only missing component, in my humble opinion, is a solid wide-angle or macro lens, but that would increase the price another $300-$500.

This is my first DSLR, however, I thoroughly researched it and have owned and extensively used two very good SLR's and the shift has been rather smooth. The Canon 60D is a great DSLR camera for those amateurs who do not wish to spend Canon 7D money and find the Canon T2i inadequate.

Only complain about the experience was that the items were not properly packed, but not enough of a reason to remove a star from the rating scale.

The only kind of camera I have had was an old throw away camera. So far with this Canon 60D, it really seems to be what they say the camera is. I am amazed how good of pictures that it takes. Some have not been very good due to the blurriness of them. This is not the cameras fault but the person behind the camera. The main reason for this review is for Cameta Cameras. This is who I ordered it from. When I placed the order I needed the camera to be delivered by a certain date. I purchased the 2 day shipping. After I had placed the order I realized that the day I ordered the camera, I had the wrong date which meant that the camera most likely would not be delivered when I needed it. It was late in the day and not sure if I could change the shipping or even get it out that day. I sent an email to the company explaining my screw up and they responded that they would make sure it got out that same day. I received the camera when I needed to have it. Very poor video quality, I don't recommend this product to nobody, nightvision doesn't even work very cheaply made and the base was broken when I 1st received it and did not notice till it was over 30 days return time table it was waste of my money!

A couple of comments. The camera eventually will work, but the instructions are a cryptic as can be. If you are not an IT person, you can forget trying to figure out how to get access to this camera from outside of your home network. This appears to be a Hong Kong based company without over the horizon support. On-line support is non-existent. And if you are a Mac person, forget it. All of their initial setup utilities are Windows based. I WASTED $4.95 on their EasyN iPhone app that does not work at all!

But if you use their client or the clunky interface over the web, it works OK. I am returning this item and going with something more mainstream like Foscam.

I went straight to 720 60p and have not shot in anything else since i bought it... Its just so clear and sharp... I'm so happy with the image quality (out of the box), i have not even felt the need to start tweaking, plus i think i'm now a AVCHD convert too, seems to handle fast motion really well.

The real kicker is its just so nice to pop the SDHC card out and be able to instantly view the footage on my laptop, without the whole tape download/cineform convert/render thing ....

This is easily one of the best HD Cameras on the Prosumer level of any kind. The quality of the image, thanks to the Zeiss lens is incredible. I shot on the run in New Zealand in the middle of winter, and was able to get great definition from everything from the foreground to the background. Leaves and grass are clearly separated and not like in most HD cameras all bunched up together. Stunning. Audio real good, but you need to buy an extra mic/mix as the one that comes with the camera does not work for filming, but it's good enough for quick stuff.

To export footage into computer is a breeze, but time consuming. I use Final Cut Pro 7 and it took no time to get the footage into bins directly.

F-stops/shutter/focusing is manual, which increases the quality of the picture shot. Zeiss lens is incredible. Low light is beyond believe and we pushed the grain as high as possible, and the range is quite big. Great for low light situation. We pushed it as far as a night shoot in a moving car with only the inside light on, and you could still get definition on the blacks. Granted in the end the image is way too grainy, but this is an example of how far you can push the camera.

You can use up two mics at the same time. Cards are regular SD cards for media.

Overall an INCREDIBLE camera for most indies and even a b-camera for bigger projects. It's light and portable. Only negative, if you can say that, is that you can't change the lens but then again for under $4,000 this is FAR SUPERIOR to the EX1 series (obviously not as good as the EX3).

I am not a professional videographer but have been creating and editing training videos in digital since 1998 or so. The camera is surprising light for it's size, easy to operate and has a wonderful variety of configurations for audio. I recorded some samples using a 32GB SD card (very cheap!) using the highest FX 1080i setting. when you go straight to a TV via hdmi to view footage it is absolutely stunning. Even with no lighting except indoor flourescents i found the video sharp and bright. Editing was a snap using sony vegas 12. It handles AVCHD files extremely well (hello, sony) and gives a staggering number of ways to render your master video. I found that even when things are compressed considerably (9mbps for DVD quality) the regular DVD produced is still remarkably good (for DVD mind you) What I like is that I can take the highest resolution video and use it to create either blu-ray or standard dvds. I also purchased the sony uwpV1 wireless lavalier mic and though it is pricey (500-600 bucks) it is easily the best wireless mic i've ever used. Works easily with the camera with the receiver mounting to the camera shoe. You can also use two sources at once (audio) and alter the levels. The camera is just a joy to use and even if you're not very sophisticated you can pretty much point and shoot using the standard presets. I like the dual SD slots too. If you use both slots and two 32bg SD cards (you can get two for under 100 bucks) you could record at the highest possible resolution and bitrate for something like 7 hours or so and transfer couldn't be easier, just pop out the card and pop it into a usb card reader and boom! I'm very pleased with the purchase so far!

D-Link Wireless Internet Camera, Home Security, 802.11b, 11Mbps

I just bought this product and it's all what I expected. I just followed the quick installation guide, plugged in ethernet cable and the power, set the ip as recommended 192.168.0.20 on the camera and my wireless Netgear router and it works. I can view the camera immediately. But when I unplug the ethernet and into wireless mode, it didn't work. I ended up calling tech support and got a live support person in less than 5 minutes, he suggested I reboot(power down and up) my camera and router. The wireless mode now working.

I tried to set the camera up behind the router according to the instruction on the manual from the CD provided, it didn't work. After playing around for 3 hours, I finally figured out that the default port 80 and 8481 don't work, you have to open up the second port 81 and 8482. I IPView software provided in the CD does not have motion sensor, you can download the latest version of IPView with motion sensor for the DLINK website, and it works very well. It can detect a slightest movement.

PROS: price, good picture(can adjust brightness), motion sensor software(download latest IPView).

CONS: no audio, can not pan view(must manually pan camera), no email picture option.

These are a new generation of "webcams". These cameras have a built in web server. They connect to your home net via ethernet. Management programs can display the images from the cameras on your computer screen.

I recently examined a Hawking camera. Superficially, it seemed to have security, but there were only two official ways to get an image from the camera. One was by using a facility where the camera e-mailed you an image. This image was tagged as spam by my provider because it used the big5 character set, even though it contained no text. But the other way was to use a java applet which was automatically downloaded from the camera, the same way any applet would be loaded.

This was the only image data displayed on the camera's web interface.

I wanted to get a still image, so I traced the applet's data stream. The applet simply connected to a port on the camera and then presented four characters and a newline. The camera responded with a four byte header and a jpeg. I was able to use echo, sleep and netcat to pull jpegs out of the camera but I did not have to present the password to pull jpegs out of the camera.

The instructions that come with the camera tell you to open this port to the Internet via port forwarding from your firewall. You also open the camera's web port.

If you do this, then a hacker can see that you have this camera and then they can look for other open ports, and if they find the camera port, they can easily pull jpegs out of it with no password.

This is OK, though, since the camera is so incredibly bad that all that anyone will see is sort of a flesh shaped amorphous mass. I took this camera back to the store.

There are two other products on the market. One is the D-Link DCS-900W, and the other is the Linksys Wireless G. Both are comparable to the Hawking and way better.

The Linksys presents both sound and video as an MPEG4 stream. I know of no way to get still images from this camera (other than by having the camera e-mail you one). There is an active X control that allows you to view the video on a windows system, or, with the right codecs, you can use Media Player or Mplayer to view the stream. However, only a Windows user using Internet Explorer can access the camera through the web interfacr and see full motion video. Everyone else can go through multiple layers of frames to determe what the url is for the mpeg4 stream then, that URL can be fed to a regular media player that can play (or record) an mpeg4 stream.

The Linksys can be connected to a 10 or 100 wired ethernet, or to an 802.11b or 802.11g wireless net. It supports WEP. By default it is configured to run at a fixed address but it can run on WEP. A unique feature is that it has a small LCD panel and the LCD panel displays the IP address that it uses. It can look for motion within the camera and send out alerts by e-mail if motion is detected (that is, no external program is required to deal with automated motion detection from this camera). All data is presented on the web interface, and basic authentication (userid and password) is demanded if the camera is set up to require it before the video stream, or any data other than the base screen is presented. There are two levels of users those who can display the video stream and one user who can administer the box.

I have not installed the Linksys management software it seems to be unneeded. If I could find an open source solution that would allow me to convert mpeg4 to a still jpeg, then this would be the winning solution. But the conversion stacks I have found garble the images horribly. I believe that there is conversion available in the support software.

The D-Link has a URL where a jpeg can be accessed. All interaction is via web and all interaction requires basic security. There are two levels of users One user who can configure the camera and those who can just display pics.

The D-Link has a Java applet and an active-X control take your pick that allows you to view motion pictures and it also has full motion video so you can view full motion video from any browser that supports Java applets, or, if you are an IE user who has not installed Java, you can use the Active-X control to look at the video. Thus, the full motion video should work for almost everyone I know it works in Linux and Windows. The D-Link has the best low light capability. It also has the clearest picture, by far. It does not have 802.11g and it does not have sound. It does support WEP. Internally, (to the applet) the motion data is presented as a series of jpegs, using a standard http stream format. All video or jpeg data is presented only after successful basic authentication.

The management software for the D-Link camera works reasonably well, but there is no reason to use it other than, perhaps, for upgrading the flash although the "lite" software can present a very high quality full screen full motion video. All motion detection recording on the D-Link is done in an application on a connected windows PC.

These cameras cost a few dollars more than the Hawking, but they actually have a modicum of security.

The Linksys is a winner if you need sound, or if you want to get the extra performance of an 802.11g device if you do not have any 802.11b devices, you might well not want to introduce the first one.

If you need motion detection in the camera, the Linksys devices also win. Linksys cameras and a wireless router would obivate the need for a computer onsite, and, with a DSL connection, say, would allow for the accumulation, at a central site, of images where motion was detected.

If you do not need sound say, for a manned security setup, the D-Link cameras would allow you to put 16 cameras on a single screen no wiring cost, and you could have motion detection and recording. That would be expensive, but probably much cheaper than any other solution. Considering that you could avoid wiring, it would be a winner.

for the price, this is a great tool. if u need night time viewing, add a motion detector.

i found a 4x4x6 waterproof plastic box at Home Depot, begged them for a 3x3 glass scrap, and mounted this outside w/motion detector light (see above). we'll see how it handles Florida sun next summer.

bingo! i now have 5 of these running very nicely.

please note that i use free linux software instead of PC monitoring app (IP-View) that comes with it, but friends seem to have good luck w/that app. the linux app ('motion') allows me to mix USB, video, and network cams in one survelliance app.

newest firmware for cam (2.28) hasn't crashed since i booted it over a week ago fyi.

I purchased several of these cameras and I am very pleased with their performance. They are easy to setup and sturdy. Shhh! Don't tell D-link, but I did test their durability on ceramic tile.

For the price you can't beat them. I am amazed by their update times over the web. These cameras will act as independent web servers, if you set up your router correctly. Each camera needs to have its IP and port associated correctly, after that it's cake.

As I mentioned, these cameras do update quite fast. A fact I did not appreciate until I experienced the Toshiba IK-WB01. I only use the highest resolution setting (640x400). At this resolution, you will be able to capture moving cars fairly clearly. Meaning, you can recognize make, model, color and driver hair color.

If you want to capture images a night, the DCS-900w is not for you. You should consider purchasing the DCS-950g. The DCS-900w is good to 2 Lux, making it useless at night. The DCS-950g is good to 0.5 Lux to give you an idea of the difference.

Bottom-line:

1-Relatively low cost

2-Easy to setup

3-Good updates at high resolution

4-Very stable occasional power blips confuse it like all my other wireless gear. If power blips are a problem for you, use a UPS or a timer like the guy above.

5-Software IPView light is useful

6-NOT for low light

I wanted to use this cam for monitoring an office, house or the street, however was unable to use it at any of these locations, except during the day. This camera seems to require minimum 5-10 lux. For example in the evening, even on a well lit street it is already very difficult to distinguish the shape of my car less than 10 feet away. Also indoors there is a lot of noise under any amount of artificial light, unless you put your face in front of the camera or the area is lit by natural sun light. Basically after 5 PM the quality gets pretty bad and after 6 PM the cam becomes unusable.

It might be OK for video conferencing if you sit next to your computer with a lamp pointed at your face, however this doesn't require a wireless network camera since many USB models under $50 can perform better.

The camera frame rate on my wireless network is less than 5 fps, though not sure if this is a performance problem with my wireless router (Microsoft), so I am not putting the full blame on the camera.

Generally the concept of wireless network camera is great, but it would need to be coupled with a decent camera. As a standard Webcam this camera wouldn't be worth more than $20.

I've had to do some research to discover that CCD cameras are much better than CMOS, especially in low-light, so I will be looking specifically for those now, even if they are USB-only. Learned my lesson.

ViewSonic PJD6251 XGA DLP Projector

I have have been a front projection home theater enthusiast for many years, going back to the old "3 gun" or 3 lens crt projectors.

Over the years I switched to LCD projectors. When it came time to replace the $500.00 lamp in my old Epson, I decided to look at the new generation of DLP projectors. I chose this model because it has a super bright 3700 lumens & is 3D ready. This projector also gets 4000 hours of lamp life, & the replacement is only about $250. at this time.I was not disappointed, the picture quality, brightness & contrast ratio make it a fine HD home theater projector. I shoot my own 3D movies in the HQFS format ( high quality field-sequential) & they look amazing on this projector. You can also find 3d DVDs in this format here on Amazon, & some bootleg copies of older films like "Creature from the black lagoon, House Of Wax, Dial M for Murder & others on Ebay which were copied from old Laserdiscs which were released in Japan in F.S.3D in the 80's & 90's.

The 3D in those dvds is good, however the resolution in only S-VHS quality at best. The HQFS dvds are quite good, unfortunately the selection of titles is limited. To view 3D on this projector you must have the Active Shutter DLP 3d glasses, the viewsonic models are available here at Amazon for about $89.00 each. Something you should be aware of in regard to 3D usage, these DLP projectors except only the shutter format ( projectors have no tuners) so you won't be able to watch 3D TV (like ESPN3D or Comcast3D) without going thru a PC & using a third party viewing software like stereoscopic player, or TriDef. It is also not compatable with the current generation of 3D BluRay players. There are external format converters coming out on the market which will convert the various formats (top over bottom, sise by side etc.) to the shutter format used by DLP projectors, but

for the moment, I know of none available for this model. Mistubishi makes one which works with there brand of DLP tvs, but I don't think they work with the projectors. So for now, your best bet for 3D content on thses projectors ids the HQFS & F.S. format dvds, or running your tv tuner & 3d Bluray thru a media center computer & using the afore mentioned software to convert to the 3D format accepted by this projector. 3D aside, it is a super-bright & super-clear projector for home theater use. It's 3700 lumens & high contrast ratio gives it a movie-theater like quality even in normal room light.

I bought two projectors for my church, and we are happy to have them. The projectors are bright enough for 300 people to watch slide-show or DVD. They are well worth the $$$, I highly recommend this model.

Two things that may need your attention:

The "text shot" feature does not work for me yet. The automatically report/email may also have problems. Well, my network may have problem, I do not need those features right now anyway, so did not debug further.

The mounting holes for this projectors are close enough. I bought ceiling mount brackets from Amazon, and I have to slightly modify the bracket to install them on ceiling.

The quality of the output is very good, clear, great throw distance. We hoped the 3800 lumins would be bright enough for our conference rooms, which have really bright new florescent lighting with reflectors to maximize the light. It's good enough for a PPT show, but not quite bright enough for a training session where seeing specific icons etc is required. We like the size, weight, etc. Very good buy. We would definately purchase again.

We have 2 of these projectors and they look great, we also have the smaller 2500Lm but for the money this one definitely has a brighter more vibrant look.

JVC GR-DVL505U Digital Camcorder

Recently purchased this after a month of research on it and other camcorders. The good things about this camcorder are this: 1) Unlike other camcorders that bombard you with numerous buttons placed about for you to awkardly control, JVC has devised a centralized control system, where that 90 % of what you do with the camera is done by the On/off/PLay Switch, Menu button and the Zoom, which is nicely put in a localized area that your right hand can operate with no problems. 2) The image and sound quality is exceptional. VHS,VHS-C, hi-8, cant compare to the quality of this DV Cam. 3) At 1.2lbs.( give or take a oz.), this camera is very light and easy to handle. Sony D8's are all about twice as heavy as this cam, good excercise tho. 4) Good bit of editing tools, such as Fade effects, video effects, etc. could use a tad bit more tho in this area, but suspect, its a good arrangement of editing features for the avg. consumer. Lots of manual configurations you can set too also. 5) Zoom is good, after about 20 X(10 X opitical + 10 X digital) image suffers dramatically. But very nice below this, may suggest buying a telephoto converter that will increase your optical zoom by 2 X if you are serious bout your photography. By the way, can zoom in and out on things while playing back tapes or looking at pics 6) Digital camera side of this camera is good, takes very good pics outside, inside, better be sure you got plenty of light or it will come out a bit grainy..Suggest using Photo Software to edit pics. But I'd say the digital camera part of this beats out any digital camera in the $200-300 range, and if it had a flash.. man, what it could do indoors. Definitely a great web cam. One drawback to this camera is the included battery which only lasts about 35 min. if you use LCD screen and zoom a lot. So plan on buying an additional battery. On the plus side, it only takes 1.5 hours to charge the battery. And you can get 50-55 minutes if you only use the viewfinder, but, you will soon find out how hard it is to use the viewfinder as opposed to the LCD. I like the size and manueverability of this camera. I agree with the other reviews on the battery life, but you can get extended life batteries (somewhat costly). I recommend at least one extra battery. The video and sound are excellent, but I have not figured out the best way to brighten the picture for various lighting conditions indoors the colors seem washed out. The drawbacks to this camera: The REC/Pause button does not stick out far enough from the camera, and often requires some gymnastics to pause without moving the camera, resulting in a jerky end to the recording session. Also, to attach/detach to a viewing mechanism such as a VCR or TV requires a lot of plugging/unplugging, particularly if you use the AC adapter (recommended to preserve battery life). You must remove the battery from the camera, and attach the adapter to a spot under the battery, then attach the S-video cable. For some reason, you cannot charge the battery while the AC adapter cord is plugged in (the charger and adapter are one and the same), so after you are done viewing, you must unplug everything including the cable from the adapter to charge the battery. I hope JVC will do something about this to allow charging with the battery left in the camera, and while using the AC adaptor.

I was very anxious to get ahold of this baby when I saw it at a trade show. A week later I went out and bought it. The MiniDV format RULES!!! The resolution is Crystal clear. The controls are right at your finger tips making the JVC Digital Camcorder Just Plain AWESOME!!!!

Another Great Feature that I was really impressed with was the ability to take digital pictures. They come out crystal clear at really really close up range. Not blurry like my digital camera does. This is more like a 2-in-1 digital Camera/Camcorder in one!!

I highly reccomend this as a great first camcorder. Its pretty light weight the Battery could last a bit longer. Over all I Love it!!!

This is a replacement over a Sony 8mm camcorder I owned, which was broken mechanically. So I was not a Sony fan when choosing a replacement.

JVC 505 camcorder certainly meets my expectation when price and performance are considered. For its basic function, the video taken is very clear and colorful, with very little distortion. It amazed me in responding to sudden change in background lighting very quickly, which was not the case with Sony 8mm. Video stabilizer kicks in when you are shooting on moving feet. Sound quality is reasonable. Battery life comes close to book value, if you refrain from zooming or using LCD. Digital still camera works like a charm, making us wonder if we should buy any more films for our Canon SLR camera.

Speaking of its outlook, it's not the smallest in size, but definitely light in weight.

Over all, 505 certainly qualifies as a family camcorder. With the price in the lower range of its class, you get good value for your money.

--Below is an update on 1/1/2002.

After I upgrade my computer from Windows 98 to Windows XP, the Multimedia Navigator program that you need to download pictures to PC stopped working with a "connection error". Searching for JVC's website returned for only one unrelated item in the entire "software update" catagory, and FAQ specifically says no software available for NT, which XP is based on. If you know a working software for NT/2000/XP, please let me know.

I give one star downgrade as a result.

Sony DSCP10 Cyber-shot 5MP Digital Camera w/ 3x Optical Zoom

If you are considering the Sony P10, you are probably looking for your first digital camera. If so, you are considering a very worthwhile purchase, both in the abstract (acquiring a digital camera) and in the concrete (the Sony P10). I've had a P9--the previous model--for about six months, and I am extremely pleased with it. I often comment that it has "changed my life." (More on that below.) First, here are the features I really like about the P9:

__ 1) Very small (fits in your pocket).

__ 2) Great resolution (5.0 megapixels is very nice).

__ 3) Delay after pressing shutter button is quite short.

__ 4) Good selection of features, which are easy to access.

__ 5) Very easy to download images to your computer.

__ 6) Memory sticks are very compact and have multiple uses.

If you are new to digital photography, #3 will come as a surprise to you. Be sure to check this on any digital camera you consider! Some have a delay of close to a second, and it will drive you crazy if you intend to photograph anything but static objects (i.e. NO people). With regard to memory sticks, I'm a big fan. They are very small and can be used in other devices such as camcorders, computers, and voice recorders.

There are a few things that could be improved in the P9, although these things do not seem to be appreciably better in other models that I've considered, and are often significantly worse. Here are the things that could be better:

__ 1) Built-in flash is terrible (as are all built-in flashes).

__ 2) No connector for an external flash. (Argh!)

__ 3) Annoying delay after pressing the on/off button.

__ 4) High capacity memory sticks (over 128 MB) are expensive.

With respect to the flash, I think it is best to think of the P9 as having no flash at all. If you don't mind having everything look flat, with stark shadows, go ahead and use the flash. Otherwise, you are much better off using natural light--the brighter the better. (Note: low light images are grainer, and consume more memory as the compression algorithms are less effective on grainy images.) I would really ding the P9 for this, if it were not that every point-and-click camera I've ever seen, digital or otherwise, has a similarly pathetic flash. (Why can no manufacturer get this right? Simply being able to bounce the light off the ceiling would help immeasurably!) Finally, when you hit the on/off button, there is a delay of several seconds before you get any indication that the camera is going to turn on/off. This can be very confusing, especially since the button provides no tactile feedback!

Now, a few comments to newbie digital photographers (as I was six months ago). I'm sure you can already list some of the obvious advantages of digital photography: 1) You can preview them on-the-spot, 2) You need only keep the ones you like, 3) You can store them on your computer, email them, and post them on the web very easily (i.e. no scanning). But, is this all hype, or does it really make a difference? My answer is this: It makes a FAR GREATER difference than you can begin to anticipate! To me the difference is so significant that I can scarcely compare digital and conventional photography. They are distinct activities. As proof of this, I now take (conservatively) ten times more photos than I used to, and I continually view them, compose them, and share them using my computer. All of these things are possible with conventional photography, just like it's possible to walk ten miles to work rather than drive. You could do those things; you just won't. Admit it, you're human.

Whether you buy the P10 or not, do yourself a huge favor and purchase a digital camera (especially if you have kids). You'll wonder why you waited so long to take the plunge.

i upgraded from an olympus 2.1 megapixel camera to the p10 and have never looked back! this is by far a camera that produces quality rich pics with crystal clear detail, vibrant colors and a fairly easy to use operating format. i've printed many 8 1/2 x 11in pics and keep getting the same response from people when i tell them that its from a digital camera and not film. they are totally blown away!!! so am i! this camera not only makes film processing obsolete but it also produces images that give film a run for their money. the battery life is fairly long compared to my old camera and the camera design is very sleek and compact. i dont think i'll be trading this camera for a while. the p10 has been one of my best electronic buys ever!

I'd like to mention some very interesting and hard to find out information about the p10 that I hope will be helpful.

Smart zoom allows addional zoom power if you are shooting below maximum camera pixel capability. This can only be seen on the screen and not in the view finder.

The video compression works well but fast motion may seem a little jerky. Almost 6 minutes of VGA fits on a 128 meg card. A 256 meg card goes for as little as [money amount]plus shipping on the net. Camera allows dividing video and deleting unwanted side for reducing memory use. Zoom function does not work during video probably bewcause of noise or focus issues. There is also an email quality video mode which will give 90 minutes of recording with adequate sound.This allows recording a lecture or interview in video with sound! The included software seems to only allow saving editing to MPEG1 which is computer only. I don't understand this. Maybe they want to sell something else. Don't get stuck with a lot of work you can't put on a video disk and look into other software.

On the web you can download Projector Station 4.1 which is for putting jpeg images into xga format and into a file on a memory stick card for projectors. This allows about 500 images onto a 128 meg card in a file that can be accessed from your camera. When you are visiting the relatives you can bring all of your family photos in the camera for playing on the tv with the video output cable supplied. If they have windows xp the camera will allow you to hook up with only the cable w/o any software and and have camera memory show as a drive. You can copy any pictures you want to other computer. Very 2K!

The battery really lasts quite well and the camera will tell you how much time is left on it. You can also purchase extended life batteries. The long cords on the charger are awkward and it must plug into the camera to charge battery. An external charger would be convenient.

Camera will stay contiuously in focus allowing a much quicker shutter response than other cameras. Using the manual distance setting speeds things up also. You can edit still pictures by zooming in during preview and then cropping what isn't in the screen. You can also make lower resolution copies of pictures for emails.

The camera takes surprising quality shots in low light without the flash. I am guessing that it somehow processes the images to avoid some of the low shutter blur. The camera is amazing and it fits in my pocket.

As usual, Sony has outdone themselves. I have never had a problem with anything Sony I've ever owned--and this camera is no exception.

It boasts 5 megapixel pictures, countless features, good looks--in a package small enough to drop in your pocket--amazing. Menu is easy to navigate, read and understand. We upgraded immediately to a 128 meg card, although we wanted to get the 256--we opted not to deal with the copyright issues on the memory stick pro cards. It seems some photography stores can't develop pictures from those protected cards--not good. You can get a nice 128 for about $... now!

... Other options include upgraded lenses, tripods and other toys you can grow into--very nice indeed!

We have been told by some very knowledgable industry folks that we may never have to buy another digital camera again! Overall--we are very happy with this Sony DSC-P10--we can't wait to start booking vacations!
