Pentax K-x 12.4 MP Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL and 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED L

Pentax K-x 12.4 MP Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL and 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED LensesI am an avid reader of reviews and many times use this information to help in my buying decision. Since I suppose I am like most others who shop, compare, read, read some more and still can't decide I hope this might help in your quest for the right camera. Of the cameras I tried, all were very nice and I would be happy with any of them.

I have been looking for a camera that will give me the biggest bang for my buck! I hope to spend more time using my camera as a hobby. Until now have used my point and shoot Canon S3IS digital for kids, family, show choir and sporting events. The Canon S3IS is a great camera; I just want to step up a bit.

I started looking at used Nikon camera bodies as I had an old Nikon 2020 35mm film camera with the 35-70mm & 70-210mm AF lens. I stopped by my local camera shop and found my old lenses would work on the Nikon D50, D70, D80 and D90 bodies. I didn't find anything used locally or on eBay (too expensive) that I wanted so I looked at the new Nikon D90. Since Canon is the other big player in this field I decided to consider their cameras as well.

Both manufacturers offered what I wanted in a camera; the ability to capture video, able to shoot in low light and had quick and accurate autofocus capabilities. I tried both brands back and forth for several weeks and preferred the Canon T1i. I proceeded to sell my older Nikon equipment to help pay for the Canon T1i and move that direction

While saving for my new purchase and reading about digital SLR cameras I became aware of some of other SLR brands. I found several online reviewers that had good comments about these less popular cameras. Sony, Olympus, etc had nice features but for one reason or another I took them out of contention. Sony, I thought the lenses were too expensive. The Olympus just didn't click with me.(pun intended) Pentax had very good remarks and had similar capabilities as the Canon T1i. Best of all, the Pentax is considerably cheaper than the Canon.

What helped me to lean towards the Pentax Kx was that I was able to watch some video shots taken with the Nikon, Canon and Pentax on Google. I preferred the Pentax video, it didn't seem jerky in motion. Still pictures side by side were also very similar in clarity. I also read several reviews comparing the Canon and Pentax side by side with very similar remarks about the performance of both cameras. The biggest positive comment about the Pentax was the exceptional low light pictures it could take. The biggest complaint with the Pentax Kx was a battery issue mentioned by a number of reviewers. I called Pentax and spoke with a technical rep about the battery issue and any other issues Pentax might be having. I was told the battery issue has been taken care of with a firmware update. I must say I was impressed with the tech rep. He was very helpful, took time to discuss his products and said that if I ever had a problem with my Pentax to give them a call as they were here to help me out.

I can use any Pentax lens, new or old on this camera. The lenses I will likely use most is the 55-300mm or the 18-55mm. Both these are included in the kit I purchased. Since vibration reduction is built into the body of the camera instead of the lens, any lens I use will automatically be a vibration reduction lens.

I purchased the Pentax Kx with the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lens package for $653.00 on Amazon. It stated the Pentax camera kit would ship in 1-4 months but I ordered it on Friday and it arrived the following Wednesday, less than a week's time, not bad!

My thoughts about the camera.

Positives:

-It's a fairly compact body but not too small. My wife likes the size and it's not heavy hanging around the neck.

-The menu is fairly straight forward (I haven't had to pull the book out yet and can still get around easy enough!)

-Takes very good pictures in several of the modes I tried. Very pleased.

-The auto focus is relatively fast and hits dead on at what I am pointing at.

-Some nice filter features are included in the menu options, great to play with but doubt I'll use them much.

-The low light pictures I've taken so far are impressive. When I downloaded pictures they were very clean, without any or very little noise even set at the high ISO setting!

-Used the batteries that are included and absolutely no problems.

-Lenses seem a bit light but balance well on the camera and focus smoothly.

Negatives:

-The shutter action could be quieter. This is my biggest complaint. It's not like everyone will turn around everytime you take a picture but I'd rather not hear it!

-The dust reduction feature rattles inside when you turn the camera to its side but I read that was normal as was mentioned by a reviewer. Otherwise I would have thought something was loose inside.

-I liked the view finder of the Canon. I think the information inside is a bit larger.

-The Pentax does not have auto focus points that light up when looking through the view finder but to me that doesn't make any difference. As I said when I pointed at what I intended to point at, it focused right on it, so this to me is a mute point.

It seems a bit slow when first reviewing my picture after each shot but I think that is due to the cheap memory card I'm using. I'll get another one tonight and expect it to correct the slow process. If it doesn't, I'll update this review and mention it! Otherwise, assume it was taken care of with a faster card.

Overall Impressions:

Would I say it feels quite as solid as the Canon? No, but I really like the Canon! However, I am still very impressed with the Pentax Kx. The Pentax isn't quite as thick or wide and I think the size might be most of the difference. You know you're shooting a SLR and my wife likes it! For the price, I figure I saved close to $400 over the Canon with similar lenses. If you want a Nikon or a Canon I'm sure you will be perfectly happy. If you decide to purchase the Pentax you won't be disappointed in this camera either. It's not the big name of Nikon or Canon but I bet you'll start to see more of Pentax with what all they offer and at the price point it is offered for! My budget was limited to $1600.00 but of course I was hoping to spend less. That's a lot of money to spend on a camera and I could have bought up to a higher level camera which I considered but I am comfortable this camera will give me what I'm looking for and saved me quite a bit in the process. I added a few pictures on flickr that were taken with this camera to give you an idea of the photo quality. Remember, I'm not a pro, I just enjoy taking pictures. Go to flickr and search for scubaguy4409

Tips to consider:

I suggest when buying online you check the retailer thoroughly. I searched several sellers on both Google and Bing and found prices from $400.00 to $900+for a Pentax Kx camera kit. The two low priced sellers I checked on had horrid reviews about shipping and more importantly when I called to ask about their camera packages they were very short with me on the phone. I don't like to spend anymore than the next guy but i figured if I had a problem with my purchase I would be %$#% out of luck with this guy!

Seems the time has come for a PENTAX.

Being loyal to Canon and loving Nikon DSLRs, I just gave this new camera the chance and think its going to change the top list for the first time.

So long, it has been a fight between Canon and Nikon, but now PENTAX got ready to go for it.

My decision was made taking into account the price for what you get, and the rivals where Canon Xti and Xsi and Nikon D5000 and D3000, but think this PENTAX kit is a real rival if not better in many features (my case, fps is an issue for my action pictures) and the price of course.

Go ahead for it and do not let others make you worry about this choice!

Just an update:

So far, my camera is doing great!

Some people complained about the AA batteries, so I wanted to state that my camera has not shown any trouble with batteries, maybe because its software is the last version, but aside of that, I just found it works great with Sony AA CYCLE ENERGY batteries: Sony Cycle Energy AA Ni-MH Rechargeable Batteries (4-Pack)

When buying, take also into account that the filter for lens 18-55 is a 52mm and the one for the 55-300 is a 58mm.

The bag I am using for this camera, both lenses, an aditional fisheye, batteries, and a couple of things more is the Lowepro Adventura 170, which is good on quality, space, and price: Lowepro Adventura 170 Camera Case (Black)

Don't let other brand loyalists sway you away from Pentax. You can buy EXCELLENT vintage lenses for these cameras. Manual focus is truly where it is at, at least for me. If you do not agree, Pentax has plenty of new AF lenses to suit anyone. However, excellent manual focus optics are easy enough to try for much less money than newer lenses of any brand. Nobody..... and I do mean NOBODY else offers the total lens compatibility of millions of vintage lenses available only to Pentax users. This particular camera is one hell of a buy. I had the money to buy a D5000 or D90 if that is what I wanted. When it comes to Image Quality, I feel I bought every bit is much camera without sacrificing any features that were important to me. This camera takes beautiful pictures and I have only scratched the surface of its abilities. The two lens package (18-55 and 55-300) was an unbelievable deal at $643. Amazon delivered the camera WAY ahead of the crazy shipment date they list. Do not hesitate. If you are considering this package, pull the trigger. Do a keyword search to find online Pentax Forums if you need more information about Pentax products.

Read Best Reviews of Pentax K-x 12.4 MP Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL and 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED L Here

Shooting with a borrowed Nikon D40 convinced me it was time to augment my pocket-friendly point and shoot (P&S) with a digital single lens reflex (dslr) APS format camera.

My favorite film SLR was a Nikon FM2.

Out of habit, I wanted to buy a Nikon DSLR.

I tried HARD to buy a new Nikon D3000 / D5000 / D90.

Instead I bought the Pentax K-X from Amazon.

And two weeks later, I bought the K-X -again.

Here is why...

(Updated comments added at bottom.)

1. ACTUAL EQUIPMENT PERFORMANCE DIFFERENCES ARE SMALL IN THIS CLASS OF CAMERA.

Camera reviews are written by experienced professionals with a critical eye and sophisticated evaluation tools. They work hard to find, explain, and magnify nuances.

My photo needs & tastes are generally simple ones. This class of camera is priced for people like me, upgrading from a digital point & shoot (P&S). Professionals expect to spend thousands for a camera body, and thousands for a lens.

2. PRICE DIFFERENCES ARE REAL.

The Pentax K-X is an above-average, entry-level dslr.

You can spend less, and get less performance.

Unless you spend significantly more, you will not get better performance.

A Nikon D90 and a K-X are both very nice 12mp cameras.

BUTthey don't cost the same.

3. AA BATTERIES My Favorite Feature!

Some people cringe at the AA batteries in the K-X. I've chased proprietary batteries for my P&S before. I was drawn to this camera because it has a simple power needs. Who wouldn't prefer an inexpensive, accessible power source, easy to find, at a good price?

The Eneloop rechargables are working out very well for me.

4. SD CARD My Next Favorite Feature!

I have a bunch of these already, and can easily find more, at a good price.

5. LONG KIT LENS Try to find a kit that includes a 300mm zoom...

I wanted a 300mm lens. The nice K-X kit lens makes friends for Pentax. The Canon XS 300mm zoom lens seems to be a source of irritation/disappointment for its owners.

6. LIVE VIEW SO WHAT?

As useful (to me) as a cigarette lighter in a non-smoker's car. I don't use this feature.

Camera focuses faster without it. It works fine, just not a factor for me.

7. HD VIDEO DITTO.

If you want to shoot HD video, there are more satisfying ways to accomplish this. This feature is not good enough for the camera to take the place of a dedicated video camera.

8. BOUGHT IT A SECOND TIME

The first K-X camera I bought had a small piece of debris (not dust) on the sensor.

Probably user correctable with a bulb blower, probably left over from manufacturing/assembly.

(NOTE: The PENTAXIAN on-line user community is a helpful, friendly group.)

Opted for Amazon's excellent return for credit process. FAST EASY with EXCELLENT Results!

9. WHY REPURCHASE K-X?

When I saw them side by side, I was amazed the K-X was so similar to the Nikon D40. When Amazon confirmed my full refund, I tried to convince myself I really wanted a NIKON after all. I had a chance to re-think ALL of my earlier evaluations, against the backdrop of a dslr price war that produced even better prices on the Canon Rebel XS and the Nikon D3000. There were even new old-stock D40s at great prices. BUT the Pentax K-X was small and friendly like these, with a lot of newer features and many small, incremental, extras. So the final selection was the same as the first time, when I opted for a K-X.

10. RELAX. It is hard to make a "bad" dslr selection.

Any of the top-selling dslrs are going to do an excellent job for just about any user.

New dslr purchasers strongly influence the sales for the cameras listed in each week's "Top Ten". They know they have a safe bet if they stick with one of the two dominant brands Canon or Nikon, etc.

When I think about how well the PENTAX K-X is meeting my needs, and how much more I would have paid to get an equivalent Nikon (or Canon) I remain very satisfied with this camera.

If you are in the market for an entry level dslr, and you think a Pentax K-X meets your actual photographic needs, you're probably right.

Update:

The more I use this camera, the better I like it.

I got a black one, but there is an amazing array of body colors in the K-X product line.

The white one is known as the "Storm Trooper" a la Star Wars.

The "feel" is very good. Control placement seems intuitive.

The build quality is very solid.

The automatic settings make it easy to take decent pictures right out of the box.

The features allow for plenty of growth as your skills change.

(Translationit really does help to read the manual.)

The kit lenses (18-55 & 55-300 ) are serving me very well.

They may be a trifle better than some other "kit lenses".

The close up shots are very impressive, and the image colors are satisfying.

Only a heavier, more expensive camera can match the combined features of the Pentax K-X.

Overall, I am very happy I bought this camera.

Post-Post Script July 2010:

In the back of my mind, I wanted the 300mm lens for a chance to shoot an occasional airshow and get more satisfying results. Last week I did just that. The focus is fast and crisp, and the resolution was wonderfuleven at the 10mp setting. Very happy with the results. Continue to be very happy with the K-X.

Want Pentax K-x 12.4 MP Digital SLR with 2.7-inch LCD and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL and 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED L Discount?

I recently upgraded from my beloved Olympus e-510 DSLR with the 14-42mm and 40-150mm kits lenses in order to get a DSLR with better low-light performance and HD video capabilities. I loved my Olympus, but image quality took a nose-dive at ISO 800, and I liked the idea of having an HD camcorder built into my camera to capture high quality family photos and home videos in one device. I eventually settled on the Pentax K-x after first buying, and then returning, a Canon T2i.

I know that the T2i costs almost twice as much as the K-x, and they're not direct competitors, but I think my experience illustrates what a great camera and bargain the K-x is and how, for me at least, it was a giant killer.

I initially pre-ordered a T2i for the $900 MSRP after reading the glowing reviews in the press about the 18MP sensor, the high-ISO performance and the killer 1080p video. When I received the T2i, I was surprised by how cheap and plasticky it felt. It's not that the T2i was likely to fall apart, but my Olympus felt and looked like a higher quality camera, even though it was about $200 less than the T2i when I bought it. I realize that the T2i is a Rebel, but for almost $1000, I expected something more solid.

Even worse was the Canon 18-55mm kit lens, which felt like a toy compared to my Olympus kit lenses. It looked cheap, and the zoom action felt very cheap, and you could hear plastic-on-plastic as you zoomed in and out. There was no lens hood included, and the optional lens hood was only about an inch deep and looked ridiculous. The front element rotated when auto-focusing, which makes using some filters problematic, and you had to switch off AF to manually make focus adjustments. My Olympus lenses did not rotate the front element, and allowed full time focus override without turning off AF. And build-wise, they looked and felt like a higher end lens. But worst of all, Canon kits lens's optical performance was lacking, rendering the 18MP sensor moot.

I could live with the cheap feel of the T2i body and the ugly jelly-bean design, but I came to realize that in order to get a lens that would match the performance of the body, I would need to shell out another $500 or more, and as a hobbyist I just didn't have the budget.

The real deal-breaker with the T2i though, was the use of Quicktime format for the HD video. Quicktime is a proprietary Apple video format, and while I must assume it works well on a new Mac, the QT videos often gave PCs problems. I'd read about this from other users, but I figured that with my high-end PCs and my computer knowledge, I would be okay. But both my new Sony Vaio laptop with Windows 7, ATI 4650 graphics and 4GB of RAM and my desktop computer with Windows XP, dual-core processor, 4GB of RAM, Raptor 10K HDD and nVidia 8800GT graphics would stutter on playback of the 1080p files. And finding affordable programs to edit Quicktime HD video files is another headache. I wasn't about to buy a new Mac just to be able to work with the video from my new camera.

So back went the T2i, and my quest for a new camera continued. I was just about to pull the trigger on a Nikon D5000, when I came across the Pentax K-x.

The first thing that grabbed my attention was the styling. I thought the red was killer, but I wasn't that brave. And the camera looked dead-sexy in navy blue, but when I saw the white version, I was in love. One thing I liked about my Olympus was that it was something DIFFERENT than all the Nikons and Canon Rebels you see every other parent carrying to school or sports functions. I would often get questions about it from people who didn't realize that Olympus even MADE DSLRs. With this Pentax, I would again have something out of the ordinary.

Then I started reading reviews of the K-x. One of the great things about the T2i is the high ISO image quality, and according to the reviews and the sample images I was looking at, the K-x was right there with it.

And the K-x also did HD video. There were some limitations, such as 720p and lack of full control over exposure while shooting video, but I didn't really mind since the samples I downloaded looked great, even on my 110" 1080P home theater projector. And 720p files take less space than 1080p and require less processing power to playback and edit. And best of all, the K-x uses Motion JPEG video format, which plays back great on PCs and is compatible with almost any Windows video editing program. The MJPEG format does use more disk space than the equivalent QT file, but hard drives and SD cards are cheap these days, so it's not a big deal.

Another great thing about the K-x is that it has sensor-based image stabilization in the body, so any lens you stick on the camera is stabilized. My Olympus used a similar system, and I was very happy with it. The big advantage is that you can be non-stabilized lenses so they'll be smaller, lighter, and less expensive.

I ended up buying the K-x in white with the 18-55mm lens. The K-x looks and feels like a higher quality camera than the T2i, and matches my Olympus in this department. The kit lens is also a very worthy piece of hardware.

With the money I saved on the Pentax, I was able to buy the legendary Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 lens, a Pentax 55-300mm zoom lens, and a Sigma speedlight. The flash was new, but I got great deals on the slighty-used lenses on eBay and Craigslist.

I've been using the Pentax for a couple months now, and have taken hundreds of pictures. I am absolutely thrilled with the camera and couldn't be happier with the photos and videos I'm getting. The T2i did have just slightly more detail, but other than that I would say the K-x has equal image quality. And the 12MP RAW image files of the K-x are faster to work with than the 18MP files of the T2i and take up much less space on SD cards, so you don't have to worry about filling up nearly as fast.

That's not too much negative I can say about the camera. I would like it to have a mini-HDMI port and a standard mini-USB port, and continuous auto-focus would be nice in video mode, but no other DSLR has that yet. Stereo mics would also be nice.

I suspect that the image stabilization system may not be as good as the one in my Olympus, but I can't say for sure since my 300mm is longer than the telephoto I had with the Olympus and will therefore be more prone to shake.

I get compliments on the Pentax everywhere I go, and it's been a joy to use and own. I could not be happier with my purchase.

In the future I'll probably add a Sigma 30mm F1.4 prime and a Sigma 10-20mm ultra-wide zoom to my lens kit.

Just for the record, I'm not trying to bash on the T2i. It is an amazing camera that is currently without peer in its price range. But if you're like me and you only have about $1000 to spend, I think you will get much more value by going with a less-expensive but almost-as-capable camera like the K-x, and using the extra money on high quality lenses. My F2.8 constant-aperture lens has been a revolution for me, and I recommend every budding photographer make room in their budget for something similar.

Sharp VLZ3U MiniDV Camcorder with 2.5" LCD and Memory Slot

Sharp VLZ3U MiniDV Camcorder with 2.5' LCD and Memory SlotAt the time my purchase, the Sharp VLZ3U MiniDV camera was the least expensive digital camcorder on the market. Price was very important for me. Here's what I have found to be "important" aspects of the camcorder that I didn't know before I ordered it.

1. The camcorder can record video on miniDV tapes or take pictures and store them on SD (secure digital) memory cards. However, the camcorder came without either media. Silly me, I had expected that the camcorder come with one miniDV tape to get me started, but no. I had to run out and buy a miniDV tape in the evening.

2. The camcorder comes with 3 ways to "download" images or video:USB, DV, AV. The USB port allows the computer to download digital pictures from the SD card, the DV (digital video, aka 1394 port) allows a computer equipped with a 1394 port to download the video to the computer, and the AV port allows connection to a TV to show the video. The camcorder does not support USB streaming, so you cannot download the video through the USB port, it has to be through the 1394 (DV) port. The camcorder also does not allow for the camera to store video on the SD memory card. So pictures has to go on the SD memory card, and it has to be downloaded through the USB port. The video has to go on the miniDV tape and downloaded through the 1394 (DV) port. More advanced (expensive) camcorders support recording on the memory card, and/or USB streaming. For the price difference, I found that it was easier (cheaper) for me to add a 1394 card to my computer. It was also very easy to download the video and start making movies using the camcorder, the 1394 card, and moviemaker on WinXP.

Overall, I was quite happy with the camcorder. I still think that they should have included one miniDV tape, but that's just a nitpick.

I have only owned this camcorder for two days, however there's so few reviews, I thought I'd post one. I used to have my own video production company many years ago (wedding videos and such), so I'm somewhat experienced with videocams.

First of all, I bought this as a small and cheap cam. It fits the bill. I decided to go for the vlz3u over the vlz1u because I wanted the 16 bit sound, and the ability to digitize old vhs footage straight in.

I didn't get the 5zu because it was more money, and i heard that black and white viewfinders are more accurate than color. All told, I think it would have been better to go for the color viewfinder of the 5zu, and to get the remote control as well.

At first I found the camera and manual a little on the complicated side. However, after a little while, the camera modes and menus became more and more intuitive. This camera has a lot of features.

A few things to remember is you have to pull out the viewfinder or else you can't see anything through it (thought my viewfinder was broken). Also, when you play back tapes, the lcd monitor has to be pulled out in order to hear sound. ie if you only view the tape through the viewfinder, no audio. The Sharp customer service rep I called at their tech support line had less of a clue of how the camera worked than me. I think he only had the manual in front of him, and no camera.

One feature that is totally useless is the digital stabilization which is automatically turned on in automatic mode. At first I thought the camera had a really bad picture until I turned off the stabilization.

The video is average to good, depending on the amount of light. This is definately not a low light camera. Bright outdoors, or well lit indoors.

The LCD monitor is gorgeous, really high quality like a top quality laptop screen.

Ergonomically, the camera feels like it should fit a smaller hand than mine. It kinda sits in my hand like a firm lump of hamburger. The little switch used to change the camera to various modes is hard to use. The rest of the camera, including installing the battery, installing the tape, etc is very intuitive.

Another feature is the timecode. This camera allows you to record the timecode out, which is great if you want to give somebody a copy of their tape, and then they pick out the frames they want included in and out of their edits. I plan to do a little video editing of other people's work, and "striping" output is key. This camera does it.

All in all, a very capable little bucket. Loses some points on the low light performance, ergonimic handholding, and the mode button.

But gains points in that it packs a lot of features that you will really appreciate should you choose to explore the manual and try things out.

Definitely a budget camcorder for the tech afficionado!

Buy Sharp VLZ3U MiniDV Camcorder with 2.5" LCD and Memory Slot Now

* This camcorder is one of the better buys for a cheap DV camcorder that'll give you solid performance and decent quality for the price. Don't expect it to blow away $800+ 3CCD high-end camcorders, but do expect about 350 lines of resolution under EIA 1956 test pattern tests.

* While video quality isn't the very best when viewed on a PC monitor (vs. high-end camcorders), watching the end results on most non-HDTV TV sets give you very good video quality and nice results.

* Menuing system and layout works well for me, and no manual needed. Overall, it's simple enough that my 3 year old niece took it from my hands and filmed her own birthday by herself. That easy to learn and use!

* A few manual controls such as manual iris, gain, white balance make this a nice beginner level videographer's camcorder as well -ie. good for learning, students.

* Stabilization isn't as good as on the more expensive, so tripod or simply hold it steady on wide angle. You can get nice results with the latter.

* Still pictures only 640x480 and grainy, but decent just to get a still image idea of what's going on for reference. Bring a digital camera if you really want good stills. Otherwise, works well and no real problems.

* Build is nice for the price. Solid and nice feel in hands. Comes with everything except a blank tape and perhaps a bag if you want to carry it in something.

* Battery lasts 1 1/2 hours or so -one battery, one tape. Just buy and carry one battery for every tape you expect to use easy to remember. Charges in about 2 hrs.

* Can't find a single big reason to return it for the price -just a nicely priced, beginner's DV camcorder that does quite a lot. A happy little toy!

* Sony DCR-HC40 is a big step up in build, image quality, stabilization, etc., but that's comparing a $600 to a sub-$300 camcorder now. Thus, 5 stars for the features & price. When compared to the very best camcorders costing $$$, it's only average but that's comparing the gold standard to something far cheaper. But if budget isn't a problem, the Sony is the better choice of the two.

* More accessories on Sharp Japan's website, but you'll have to find an importer for those items. Limited mostly to filters, extra battery, remote control (~$45), etc. Remote control is hardly ever used unless you're the type to plug the camcorder up to the TV far away from you because you don't have long enough cables to plop the camcorder in your lap for control.

* DV transfer to XP PC works flawlessly and w/o problems.

* Nice manual explains every feature in depth.

* Light and comfortably small! Almost like those smallest vertical camcorders. Can film for hours w/o weighing down the arms.

* A little bit of tape motor noise if the scene is quiet not like the Sony, which is silent but nothing noticed nor obnoxious when used in normal noise level scenes. Still, if you're filming something important, may get the Sony or an external mic & tape setup for the audio.

* Low-light performance is good. Grain level is decent and not glaring or bad although noticable, and you still can get a watchable image indoors at night. (again, not the best vs. $$$ camcorders, but decent for a consumer's level camcorder at this price)

* Overall, you can't go wrong with this low-priced, beginner's DV camcorder. Really nothing wrong with it, and if handled properly, it'll give years of solid use and fun w/o a problem. Don't expect the world from this camcorder, just a good average performance, and you'll be fine. Read Best Reviews of Sharp VLZ3U MiniDV Camcorder with 2.5" LCD and Memory Slot Here

When I unpacked my Sharp VLZ3U MiniDV Camcorder, I was pleasantly surprised on how small the camera was. Sharp did a great job in designing the swiveling handgrip that allows you to shot ergonomically in almost any hand positions. The LCD is very bright and has a function that allow the user to turn off the backlight much like a Pocket PC to conserve battery when operating in well lit areas. The attractive feature of the camera that may be appealing to those that want simplicity, is the fact that the overall unit does not have an overwhelming number of button and switches and other thing that most laypeople will never use. Most of those settings can be found in the "Menu" that is tricky at first, but logical in design. Manual functions allow users to manipulate white balance, iris and gain, but to have to do this though non-designated function keys may deter people that prefer manual operation. The "Auto" setting does a very good job in evaluating white balance especially in indoor to outdoor transition shots and with incandescent lighting.

The most noticeable drawback to this camera is battery life, although it handles pretty good with the supplied 1000mAh Li-ion, the lack of the ability to use an oversized battery for extend shooting time is not possible since the battery compartment is enclosed within the fold-out LCD screen. This makes the LCD backlight override option even more attractive when trying to conserve battery. Most of my heavy use comes from my coaching position that requires me to recompose my shots almost every time I turn on my camera to take a shot. Even with the heavy use, the battery gives me about 1½ to 2 hours of standby and shooting time with the LCD on, a little less (about ½ hour) if I leave the LCD backlight on. I've bought 2 extra batteries which is more than enough, but highly suggested to avoid the dreaded "low battery" indication on those times that you wish you had a fully charged battery.

Over all I think this camera was a great purchase for the price that I paid. I have used more superior cameras before, and like most people, did not intend to spend over $400 even for a digital based camcorder. I and enjoy what sharp has put into this unit, especially the unique design for user-friendly operation.

Update 6/7/05

After hundreads of hours of use, in all imaginable environments and places. This camera is still running strong and solid. Being that the CCD is so small, I didn't care all too much for the still images that it captures onto an SD card. But after using it to capture many enjoyable candid shots, espcially at 10X away, I have found a new love for this camera.

Using the with the free Movie Maker 2 by Microsoft, I am able to make some great highlight films of my athletes in action. The shutter speed is good enough on sport mode to accurately examine thier techniqe on film night.

I also want to again rave about the size of this thing. It is never a concern for space when I carry this thing along with me to my track meets or to my vacations since it is about the same dimensions as my digital still camera.

When taking movies and living with a camcorder for more then a couple of hours or days you figure what is really important to you and the whole experience and what is not as important.

First I suppose is the format, digital is a given at this point, and mini DV seems to be a standard at this and higher price points. About price point, this camcorder is hard to beat there.

Then what are you using the camcorder for? To take digital still pictures? I sure hope not , judging this camcorder by that standard is unfair and for the most part irrelavent.

You are using the camcorder to take movies which this camcorder does a very nice job of and I would say a better then average job of. The viewscreen is much better then average and is bright and clear.

Ever use a camcorder for a while and even though there is more to shoot you still put it down because it is not comfortable to shoot anymore. Your hand or arm or whatever is sore. I think that has happened to most of us. The ergonomics and design of this camcorder goes a long way to help with that kind of problem. It is easier to hold and shoot longer with it. I judge that as very important to me. Probably more important then the particular low light performance characteristics of this vs. that vs.something else etc.

You can order a remote for this camera if you want and the battery life is good but an extra is always a good idea.

The menu controls and etc. take some getting used to, but I assume you are buying the camera for more then a days use. Once you use it a little while, it is very functional and thorough.

This camcorder takes relatively effortless, decent quality movies, in digital format at a very affordable price.

Real-time recording,Wireless WiFi IP Internet Pan Tilt Dual,Two-way Audio Camera IR Day/Night Vision

Real-time recording,Wireless WiFi IP Internet Pan Tilt Dual,Two-way Audio Camera IR Day/Night VisionVery poor video quality, I don't recommend this product to nobody, nightvision doesn't even work very cheaply made and the base was broken when I 1st received it and did not notice till it was over 30 days return time table it was waste of my money!

A couple of comments. The camera eventually will work, but the instructions are a cryptic as can be. If you are not an IT person, you can forget trying to figure out how to get access to this camera from outside of your home network. This appears to be a Hong Kong based company without over the horizon support. On-line support is non-existent. And if you are a Mac person, forget it. All of their initial setup utilities are Windows based. I WASTED $4.95 on their EasyN iPhone app that does not work at all!

But if you use their client or the clunky interface over the web, it works OK. I am returning this item and going with something more mainstream like Foscam.

Nice camera and easy to configure with remote access. The only drawback is the network security (wifi access --easily hackable, & can be viewed by anyone with the remote viewing address without advanced configuration).Great features, can be remote controlled to 'look around' and can be easily accessed from mobile devices.

Panasonic PVDV203 MiniDV Compact Camcorder with 2.5" LCD and 8MB SD card

Panasonic PVDV203 MiniDV Compact Camcorder with 2.5' LCD and 8MB SD cardAs an experienced digital camcorder and camera owner, I have

been on the move again. I was recently trying to decide which

digital camcorder to keep. Decisions, decisions. Immediately

after buying the 203, I tried out the new Sony TRV19. I found

that it had some nice Sony features, especially the Carl Zeiss

lens and touch screen LCD. I wish it had at least megapixel

still image quality or at least some type of interpolation. I

then returned to the Panasonic DV203 and have grown to like it a

lot. It offers nice features for the price and the overall

quality is fairly decent.

The Panasonic PAN PVDV203 that I originally, only briefly tried

out is looking better and better for the money.

Admittedly, the Panasonic PV-DV203 has some disadvantages and

might not be the "heavy duty serious" type of digital camcorder

that critical cameraphiles look for, but it has some nice features for the price. The non-glare LED

style light is a plus and it offers SD media

storage for [dollar amount]. There is a the "magic pix" setting for enhanced exposure although it contributes

to slow frame capture. Audio, a hallmark of Panasonic

not always mentioned in camcorder discussions, is superb.

Unfortunately, the low light capability of the Panasonic PV-

DV203 is mediocre in a dark or dimly lit room but quality seems

to improve significantly using the LED light and/or Magic Pix

feature. I still need to use this camcorder under a lot of

different conditions to get a much better idea as to its

capabilities. Initial reaction is that Sony optics in particular

are definitely superior. Whether that justified the price

difference is another matter and a very subjective decision. I

will be doing a lot of outdoor shooting shortly, but of course

that is optimal for most digital cameras and camcorders.

One of the major disadvantages is mainly the "interpolation"

instead of "real" megapixel still imaging. You can definitely

see the difference.

A web designer I work with who is very experienced with digital

photography pointed out to me that low light video is usually

not that great with many camcorders and that the low or zero lux

features available on some are a nice and important feature only

if you happen to shoot in very dark or non-lit areas. After

examining and handling it, he also noted that the Panasonic

DV203 has some nice features and that suggested that I should

use it extensively rather than prejudging it by constantly

looking for slight advantages or disadvantages. It does offer a

lot of functionality and I guess I am not going to find the

"perfect" digital camcorder in this price range. The bottom line

is that I need to get used to it, enjoy it and explore its

versatility, which is significant. It would also be nice,

... I am now leaning toward keeping this camcorder....

I purchased this digital camcorder on May 4th to be used primarily for family events. After an exhausting two hours or so reading all the reviews on the Sony, JVC and Panasonic MiniDV camcorders I decided on this one.

I am not a photographer or videographer, just a father of a two month old baby boy who wants to record special events. So far, I am very happy with this camcorder. I can't compare this camera's performance to the Sony or JVC in real world experience, but I can't see how they could be any better. Interior recording, even in low light, plays back very nicely even on a 52" projection TV which highlights imperfections. The recording was comparable to a DVD movie!

The MagicPix low-light recording feature is not very useful in my opinion. The framerate is slowed down so much and there is a LOT of motion blur. My friend has a Sony Digital8 camera with Nightshot and that is a far superior low light recording capability. However, I don't plan on shooting many scenes in complete darkness so this is a moot point.

After two weeks of ownership, the only thing that annoys me about this product is that the battery must be remvoed from the camera to use the AC adapter. If you plug the camera into the battery charger while the battery is charging, it will stop charging the battery until the camera is unplugged.

In a nutshell, as a family man wanting to record special events, this camera is awesome. The Electronic Image Stabilization feature will let you record anything without all the wibble-wobble and is HIGHLY effective compared to the other brands. The images are sharp and colors crisp. I'm extremely pleased!

This digital camcorder has some nice features for its price range, including the non-glare LED lighting. Stills are 1.2 megapixel interpolation on SD media. Overall great product, easy to use, compact and loaded with features. Panasonic has great products. It's a great product that has good features and terrific quality of video and sound. A must have and must worth of checking out.

I am furious.

A year and a half ago I got the dew detection error after a winter weekend ski trip and figured that perhaps some snow had gotten into the camera when I was changing tapes.

I called Panasonic's customer service and since it was still under warranty, I shipped the camera to someplace in Indiana and after about 5 weeks it was returned and I thought okay. All is hunky dory now. So I had to pay $25 out of pocket to ship this defective DV camera to be repaired. But now it seem to work just fine.

Then a few months later, out of curiousity I logged onto Amazon to read the reviews of my camera. That was when I found out that this 'dew detection error' appears to be a common problem with this particular model (and perhaps even other Panasonic models as well.

If this is indeed the case, why then hasn't Panasonic issued a recall on this model?

Flash forward to ....THIS MORNING just about 3 hours ago...

I get the old 'dew detection error' again when I was trying to film my twin boys in our backyard. Family friendly camera? Huh? Dew detection in the middle of a draught? It hasn't rained here in WEEKS!!! The camera is as DRY as a BONE. And the error message won't stop! I could probably aim a hairdryer at this camera for several hours and still get this error message. And there is nothing you can do. It shuts the camera off after 10 seconds and tells you to eject the tape.

I am so angry right now and I KNOW that by now my warranty has run out so now i am stuck with--as another customer wrote--a very expensive paperweight. UNBELIEVABLE. I plan to phone Panasonic today and find out if there's any recourse. DO NOT BUY THIS CAMERA PEOPLE. I usually trust the Panasonic brand, but in this case I would advise going with another brand at least for a digital camera.

Sanyo Digital Camera w/ 5x Optical Zoom, 14 MegaPixel , 3" LCD Display , Movie Rocording - Blue Col

Sanyo Digital Camera w/ 5x Optical Zoom, 14 MegaPixel , 3' LCD Display , Movie Rocording - Blue ColorI am an apartment manager, and I use this camera all the time to take photos of damages after people move out. The auto-focus works great in various lighting conditions, and I have never had a photo come out blurry. The batteries seem to die fast, so I always carry an extra set.

I am purchasing another one of these for my 7 year old, because it is inexpensive for the quality of the photos. The shutter speed is quick enough for his always-moving hands, and the buttons are simple enough for him to easily operate. This is exactly what I have been looking for.

The camera worked great, for the first 7 weeks I owned it. I purchased this camera for the Lomo feature. The camera took decent pictures. The reason I give the item 2 stars is that on the 53rd day I owned the product, it would not turn on. I thought it might have been a dead battery, so I plugged it into the charger, but the USB/Power LED did not light up. Despite reseating the battery and trying different USB cables, I could not get the camera to operate again.

love the touch screen

I use this camera for audit work. It is the only one I have found that imprints date and time on the picture. The zoom is very good and the flash very bright, sometime too bright but good for even 10 feet away. The camera also does HD movies.

Sony NEX-F3K/S 16.1 MP Compact System Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Silver)

Sony NEX-F3K/S 16.1 MP Compact System Camera with 18-55mm LensPicked this camera up at Best Buy. So instead of relying on Amazon you should definitely check and see if one of your local stores has it in stock.

Anyway, the first thing you will notice about this camera is that its a bit larger than its predecessor (and the 5N). I've heard a lot of the reviewers bemoan the fact that its a larger camera, I guess those folks like their cameras to feel extremely front-heavy? With the NEX-F3, the camera feels much more balanced and much more pleasant to hold and shoot with. Also, the deeper hand-grip up front and the placement of the shutter button are plusses as well. It's still quite compact, though.

On this camera, the battery charging is done in-camera like a cell phone. The camera takes a long time to charge though, from what I have noticed so far. The SD card has been separated from the battery slot but it still sits on the bottom of the camera. This can make it a real pain if trying to use a tripod.

The camera's weakest spot is its user interface. Sorry, I should not have to go digging in the menu system to change the ISO. And I should also be able to adjust the shutter speed and aperture while adjusting the focus area which I can't do on this camera. The system for changing settings on this camera is so menu driven that it might slightly irritate enthusiasts who want direct controls to quickly adjust settings. Basic direct access controls should not be a luxury Sony reserves for its more expensive cameras.

The LCD is bright and clear, and articulates. Although this one flips up so you can take self-portraits with it if that's your thing. When you flip up the LCD to face you and press the shutter, you get a 3-second countdown before it snaps a self-photo.

The video is excellent on this camera as is with most Sonys. I haven't played much with it other than shooting short clips but from what I have seen thus far it does really well. It doesn't have much of an enthusiast feature set though.

The camera has excellent image quality...on-par with its sub-$1,000 DSLRs peers. Even at ISO1600 you have to look very carefully to notice some effects of noise reduction and detail degredation. Sharpness and detail capture are excellent. The camera tends to underexpose a little but I would rather it do that than overexpose. The default color output is a little muted, but change the color setting to Vibrant and you get much punchier results (if you're the type of person that prefers more saturated colors). But if you're coming from a point and shoot or even an enthusiast compact, you will certainly notice the different in image quality with this camera. The 18-55 kit lens that it comes with is an okay performer. I think the 16-50 pancake zoom that just came out is a little bit better optically but as a starter lens, the 18-55mm lens is fine.

Shooting performance is top-notch, the AF is snappy even in low-light, and shot-to-shot times are good.

If you don't mind the quirky interface that this camera has, you'll find it to be an excellent performer otherwise. Excellent image quality, decent AF performance, and a comfortable shooting design.

I ordered The NEX F3 from Amazon and when I got it the LCD screen did not turn on. I contacted Sony and they told me to send it in for repair, so I just decided to return it to Amazon for a replacement. Amazon sent me a replacement the very next day and this time it worked. The NEX F3 suits me perfectly. I am not a professional photographer, just a mom who likes to take beautiful pictures, especially of her little kids, friends and I also take pictures at small events. I did not want a point and shoot camera, and I also did not want a compact system camera that looked like a point and shoot. After reading different reviews from professional websites, I decided to go with this one because I really like the way it feels in my hands and I also like the way it looks.(beautiful, sleek camera)

WHY I LIKE THIS CAMERA

Very easy to use

The auto portrait framing

180° tiltable 3.0" LCD for self portrait. (I like taking pictures of myself with my babies so this was very important for me)

Having a built in flash is also a plus.

The photo creativity interface, (the picture effective mode) My pictures look like it was taken by a professional. I used the SDHC EXTREME 16G C10 with this camera and it works very well and very fast.

I am very satisfied with this camera, I really love it.

I've had this camera for about three days. It is going back. The images it takes are excellent, the body size for me is just right (big hands), the zoom feature and the portrait framing are really nice features. The build seems to exude quality. Well, if it's such a great camera, why is it going back you ask? I took it out in the California sunshine at 10am and the LCD screen was so dim I couldn't see what I was supposed to be shooting. OK, so I change to the highest manual setting. Not much help although a little better. Still not very bright. So I change to the Sunny Weather setting; this should do it, right? Fraid not. The screen is still dimmer than my Panasonic FZ150 point and shoot. Is is practically impossible to compose a picture on a, what I consider to be poorly designed LCD screen. It is so reflective as to be almost mirrorlike. You have to shade the screen somehow and it still doesn't help much. The designers must never venture outside in the sunlight when they design/test the screens. It breaks my heart to send it back but you either pay another $350 for a viewfinder attachment or live with a camera where composition is a guess and by golly venture when you have no shade to hide in. I don't think the screen on my particular unit was defective, just a poorly designed part of the camera. The screen on my FZ150 was at least a third brighter and practically non-reflective compared to the F3. Sony should ask Panasonic how to design a screen. A gigantic screw up on an otherwise excellent camera! (Could it be a purposeful ploy to force you to shell out another $350 to buy the viewfinder?) I know this review may sound cynical but I really wanted to keep this little beauty but if you can't compose a picture, what good is the camera? I may have to spring for the SLT A57.

Read Best Reviews of Sony NEX-F3K/S 16.1 MP Compact System Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Silver) Here

I'm writing this review after putting my nikon D50 up for sale on ebay. A lot of reviews are going to focus on the fact that manual controls are hidden too deep inside the menu (which is true!), but those reviews are missing the point that this camera makes good decisions so much of the time that you'll rarely, if ever need to choose the aperture or shutter speed.

What I like about the camera:

1) The flash is mounted on this bendable plastic prop that can be bent to face upwards. This means that instead of your flash whitewashing your subjects, you can have it bounce off the ceiling, giving pictures a far more natural look. This feature has actually made the flash a usable option for indoor photography.

2) The lcd screen flips out, allowing you to take the "me, my wife and the palm tree" pictures you've always wanted to take. You'll see some reviewers carping about how the screen doesn't do a 45-degree bend (like on the nex 5N) for overhead shots, but ignore them the screen does bend enough for you to take overhead shots.

3) The superior auto mode is the star of the show, so I'm surprised it's not turned on by default. It's this feature that makes me appreciate how far cameras have come over the last 5 years. This mode does a very good job of guessing what you're trying to take a picture of (children, potted plants, gazelles) and applying the right shutter speed, aperture size, etc. This mode also enables auto-HDR, which does a great job bringing out detail in a high contrast picture.

4) This is actually the result of point 3), but the auto white balance on this camera is terrific! With my old nikon I had to constantly be adjusting the white balance, setting it using a grey card, etc. This camera nails the white balance each time!

What I don't like:

There are some settings that seem to disappear if you power cycle the camera like the picture effect, the "warmth" of the picture, etc. This can get annoying.

Overall, I have to say I'm quite pleased with the purchase. My nikon D50 used to be my camera of choice for the creative control it provided, but this is my new favorite, because it lets me spend more time taking pictures and less time fiddling with settings to get the picture right.

Want Sony NEX-F3K/S 16.1 MP Compact System Camera with 18-55mm Lens (Silver) Discount?

I'm an photography enthusiast; I like to tinker with my settings (sometimes from shot to shot), so I was a little worried about the lack of external controls on the F3. I've been following the NEX camera's ever since their announcement a few years ago. I had always been fascinated with its features and performance, so I decided maybe the 3 programmable buttons on the F3 would be enough. Apparently the 3 soft programmable buttons are a bit deceiving... The 3 button actually allow you to program 7 settings for quick access! This is because the button in the middle of the dial can be programmed to hold 5 settings. If you choose this, when you press the middle button, it brings up a sub menu of (up to) 5 settings. This along with the 2 pre-programmed buttons (drive mode: single shot, multi... and exposure compensation) really gives you quick access to 9 settings.

Here's what what my setup looks like:

Pre-programmed:

*Up on dial (Display)

*Left on dial (Drive Mode)

*Down on dial (Exposure Compensation)

Soft Programmed:

*Right on dial (Digital Zoom: this actually looks pretty good, so I kept it on easy access)

*Bottom button (Shooting Mode)

*Middle button

>ISO

>Smile Shutter (Fun feature, takes a picture when the camera detects a smile yeah I fell for it!)

>D-Range/HDR settings

>White Balance

>Auto-Focus Area

A few other notes.

+Good stabilization (I got sharp images even at 1/10 shutter speed)

+Great flash (you can adjust the angle to bounce it off the ceiling for a more natural look)

+Great low-light performance

+Great image quality

-A little too much noise reduction (even on the low setting, wish I could turn it off completely, but you won't notice it much until ISO 1600+)

This camera really exceeded my expectations. If you like tweaking your camera settings, I hope the lack of external controls don't deter you from getting this great camera. You have more control than you think. I primarily shoot in Aperture mode, so I can't vouch for how the program/other auto modes perform. I might try them out on an upcoming trip. If I do, I'll update my findings on this report.

(P.S. The first thing you should do when you get this camera is: bring up the menu, go to setup, scroll down to "Help Guide Display" and turn it OFF! Seriously, the little popup help in the menu is pretty annoying).

We did and this is the one we purchased. It works excelently and captures all our precious moments on camara and now we can watch them over and over and over. It is the greatest thing, the camcorder works so well and has alot of features that you may not find on other camcorders. It is very convinient and super simple to use and hook up. It is one of those things you buy where you can honestly say you can take it out of the box and start using it in minutes. If you buy any camcorder this is the one to buy I support and suggest it to all who like it and I will say I love it.

I just got this camcorder, and while I haven't played with it much yet, I can tell that it is fine for my purposes -home shooting on special ocassions, holidays, etc. I did much research and this was one of Consumer Reports top-rated analog models. So, unless you want to make a movie, save yourself a few bucks, and the blandishments of salespeople, and buy this camera.

Case logic HDMI Male to DVI-D Male Cable HDTV PS3 LCD Plasma Computer - 15 feet

Case logic HDMI Male to DVI-D Male Cable HDTV PS3 LCD Plasma Computer - 15 feetThis cable does exactly as promised. HDMI on one side and DVI-D on the other side. The ten feet is good if you have some space between your setups.

Some notes for buyers:

1. To get HDMI video on your monitor through DVI-D, your monitor must be HDCP compliant.

2. This connection only gives you digital video. You need to output sound through another means.

Works just like the 3' long one I got from Best Buy for $75.. I guess that is where the make their money.

The cable was exactly as described. It came really fast considering I am deployed to Kuwait. Great item. I use it for connection between my projector and my laptop and PS3. Both provide accurate reporduction. I recommend this cable if you are looking for a cable at the right price. IT WORKS!

Arrived quickly and in good condition, however the construction material was a bit on the lesser expensive side (which is justified by the extremely low price). THe only issue is that the cable sheathing tends to tear and slice if wired around hard corners or cut holes.

I've worked in retail for too many years. To not name names I have worked for a major electronics store that has now gone the way of the dinosaur, and also their main (still surviving) competitor.

In every place the fact is the same. Almost no money is made on the electronic device itself, be it the PC, TV, iPod, etc. All of the money gained is from the accessories, namely the cables (not to mention their "extended warranties").

Of coarse you want the cables when you buy your new device, they know this so they sell them at the highest price they can.

This cable, as well as the other "bargain" cables I've purchased online have all worked just as well as those other "high end/name brand" cables.

And just to touch on some of the other reviews. If it isn't working right you're either doing it wrong or you happened to get the less than 1 percent defect. So either research your issue or ask for a replacement.

A top notch 5 out of 5.

Tera Grand - New and Improved Version - 4 Pack 6 Feet Color-Coded High Speed HDMI Cables with Gold

Tera Grand - New and Improved Version - 4 Pack 6 Feet Color-Coded High Speed HDMI Cables with Gold Plated Connectors - Supports Ethernet, 3D, and Audio Return -This works great. I tested it with a Mac mini, blu ray, Xbox 360, and...well I still have one more cable left!

What a great price!

I have used these for just a short time but I have NEVER had to returm a former HDMI cable purchase to Amazom for any reason. I read so much negative feedback about how the cables didn't last, they were incorrect forthe job, etc...people these problems are something you should be looking at before your purchase...look at your needs and then purchase...the cheapest route is not always the way to go. Make sure what you purchase iscwhat is needed for your product. Do some research. It will save you time and resources.

The item was exactly as described! After going through a couple of hours of research concerning HDMI cables, it became evident that the price of cables did not determine the quality. I bought these, I am happy with the purchase.
